GEESE: Food equals poop

PLEASE STOP!

Saturday’s front-page photo, “Drawing a crowd,” shows two people feeding Canadian geese.

My first response was to scream “DON’T FEED THEM.”

The couple chose not to be identified, good option. Apparently this well-meaning couple have never had to clean up hundreds of pounds of geese poop. They might come down to the same spot during the summer when kids are on the beach and help to pick up the poop.

You see tourists doing it all the time, but a Coeur d’Alene couple, please! Unfortunately the geese are protected, which even the Fish and Game authorities have acknowledged is no longer needed and have become a major health problem, not to mention all the parks and sidewalks that have to be cleaned up. Canadian geese problems are not just a local problem either.

People, these nuisance birds do not need your help to survive. Unfortunately, they survive only too well on their own.
