COEUR d’ALENE — After leading most of the way, the North Idaho College men’s basketball team needed two free throws late from Sam Dowd with two seconds remaining as the Cardinals held off the visiting Treasure Valley Chukars 91-89 in a Northwest Athletic Conference East Region game on Saturday at Rolly Williams Court.

“Our defense wasn’t where we wanted it to be tonight,” NIC coach Corey Symons said. “We can score with anyone in the country, but just have had a hard time guarding in the last week.”

NIC led throughout, but Treasure Valley tied the game with six seconds remaining. A 35-foot shot at the buzzer hit off the back of the rim for Treasure Valley.

Jalen Burkett had 26 points and 10 rebounds for NIC (14-1, 2-0 NWAC), with Niko Bevens adding 20 points and Dowd 18 points and eight assists.

“Jalen hit some big shots for us and kept us in the game tonight,” Symons said. “If we can figure out how to keep teams at 70 (points), we have a good shot at winning the league.”

Tyus Jefferson scored 22 points for Treasure Valley (8-6, 1-2).

NIC hosts Big Bend on Monday at 4 p.m.

MISSOULA, Mont. — Trey Long got a pin in 46 seconds in his 133-pound match for the Cardinals in a dual against the Argos of the NAIA at Sentinel High.

“Trey wrestled a really tough kid in Jarren (Komac), caught him in a scramble and got him on his back and got a pin,” NIC coach Pat Whitcomb said. “That was a big match there.”

Trey Meyer (165) and Levi Perry (184) won by decision and Brent Evans (157) by major decision for NIC, which wrestles Eastern Oregon on Thursday in La Grande.

“We had to put a couple of different kids in some different spots because of sickness,” said Whitcomb, who was without Jeremy Merryweather and Cooper Thomas due to illness. “Once we get over the sickness, I think we’ll be good. We’ll get down to Oregon and get back in the groove. Great Falls wrestled well and we had some good matches.”

COEUR d’ALENE — Lana Berg had 15 points and seven rebounds for the Cardinals in an East Division loss to the Chukars in Northwest Athletic Conference play at Rolly Williams Court.

Treasure Valley closed the game on a 20-2 run, holding the Cardinals scoreless in the fourth quarter.

“We came out strong and answered every response that they had,” NIC coach Chris Carlson said. “We led by nine and didn’t score in the fourth quarter. We had breakdowns on defense and just didn’t execute our offense and started playing not to lose instead of to win. We were solid defensively, but they just caught us in the fourth.”

Giavanna Sorn scored 12 points for NIC (7-6, 0-2), which hosts Big Bend of Moses Lake on Monday at 2 p.m.

Gentry Oldham scored 21 points for Treasure Valley (10-4, 2-1).
