Dave G. Zimmerman, 89

Dave went to be with the Lord on Dec. 30, 2016, at the Hospice House in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. He was born June 4, 1927, to Fenton and Beatrice Zimmerman in Rocky Ford, Colo. He served in the Army from Sept. 7, 1945, to Nov. 8, 1946. He married Patricia Kenagy on June 22, 1948, and they raised four children together. In July 1996, they moved to Athol, Idaho, where he remained until April 2015 when he went to live at Guardian Angel Homes.

Dave had various jobs in the beginning of his work career, among which were custodian at the Swink School, Southern Colorado Power and his own business Zimmerman Tree Service, which he and Pattie operated for 26 years.

He enjoyed traveling the United States in his various motor homes. He and Pattie were able to visit all the states except the New England ones. Camping was also a favorite. He would walk through the campground visiting with everyone and enjoying every minute of it. In later years, he loved to sit around the campfire and eat peanuts. He loved to people watch and visit with perfect strangers.

While living in Swink, Colo., Dave was a Boy Scout leader for several years and was very active in the community and school. He and Pattie did so much for the school in the way of chaperoning proms, school dances, donating their aerial bucket truck to film the football games, taking the basketball team clear to Prescott, Ariz., for basketball camp and when the school took students to the mountains for skiing trips and there wasn’t enough room on the bus, they took the extras in their motor home. The students loved them so much that one year they dedicated the school annual to them. He was always available to help the neighbors, friends and family. That didn’t change when he retired and moved to Idaho. He quickly became acquainted with all the neighbors and was always there to help with snow removal or whatever was necessary.

Dave is survived by his children, Marie (Ken) Merwin of Athol, and Clayton (Debbie) Zimmerman and Ralph (Tami) Zimmerman of Swink; 10 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Zimmerman; his parents, Fenton and Beatrice Zimmerman; sisters Laurine Atchinson, Mary Spurlock, Ruth Edgecomb and Wynette Pugh; brothers Marion Zimmerman and Clayton Zimmerman; and his daughter, Pam Johnson.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, 2017, at Athol Baptist Church. 29450 N. Highway 95, Athol.
