SNOW: Hidden dangers

Vicki Syth lamented a citation given by the ISP for a “rear” license plate covered by snow. While a warning may have been in order, I want her to understand the dangers posed by road debris covering vehicles.

Recently I went to pass a slow farm tractor on Meyer Road. As I came around to his left, he abruptly turned left directly into my path. We narrowly avoided a collision. We stopped and examined what went wrong. He claimed he had signaled his turn. He was correct, but failed to notice that his rear turn signal light was completely covered by mud and his signal was not visible.

Inspect your vehicles frequently. Make sure they are as safe to operate as possible.
