Idaho's teacher shortage reaching a critical low
Idaho is seeing an increased demand for teachers, but the supply is hitting a critical low and school districts across our state are struggling to fill teaching positions. Given the importance of a high-quality teacher in the classroom and how it relates to achievement, it’s time we begin to find strategies and realistic solutions to an issue that is also getting national attention — the very evident teacher shortage.

Calling all dancers
Last year our Lake City Physical Therapy staff had the privilege of working with the Coeur d'Alene Ballet Troupe Pre-professional Ballet program. It consisted of a group of amazing and talented young women that were thrilled to have the incredible Brooke Nicholson as their artistic director and owner of the Coeur d'Alene Ballet. All fall we watched their growth and development and at Christmastime we had the fun of watching their rendition of the "Nutcracker" that was so artistically done by their director, Brooke. Then as the new year progressed we watched them blossom into beautiful ballerinas and earn positions with professional troupes.

BANKS: Rules don't apply
Once again it comes to the streets of America that bigger is not better. A mere two weeks ago, another big bank’s failure to keep the public in its best interest made headlines because of its system to open accounts that really weren’t accounts. It was reported this week that a fine of $185 million had already been paid. This of course is the admission of guilt in very short order.
ISLAM: Pay close attention
Before our very eyes, the insidious, destructive disease of Islamic Supremacy is being played out. The absolute obeisance to “The Holy Koran” as it is preached by ISIS Imams demands that all of Mohammad’s true believers must work diligently to bring Islam, Allah and the Sharia laws of Allah, into every culture and country on the face of the Earth and, literally die in the effort. Not by love and active service to each other and to the needy world, by violent force.

There’s an old saying that goes: If you can dream it, you can achieve it. That’s a good start, but I think that statement needs a qualifier. I would add a few words: If you can dream it, you can achieve it if you are truly determined.

MILAN: An education champion
Many of my friends and neighbors bemoan the state of the public education system in Idaho. They point out our dismal national ratings, especially in the areas of early childhood education and per pupil spending, and the flight of qualified teachers to neighboring states. We all know that we have underfunded education in Idaho for years.
GOP: Christians aren't welcome
I agree with Dan Campos, a member of First Baptist Church of Alexandria, Va. He says the abandonment of Christian values by the Republican Party is leaving Christians to question their future in a party that once championed Judeo-Christian morals. Hate toward another human being created in the image of God is a violation of the greatest commandment, “to love the Lord with all your heart, mind and soul and to love your neighbor as yourself.”
REFUGEES: Cost too high
In response to the letter from Mr. Mallory, I wholeheartedly agree with him. Our elected officials are wrong to place the cost of refugees onto the citizens of the United States. Boise’s mayor did just that; those refugees have been given residence in our state, which in fact we will pay for both with the cost of their care and possible lives that may be taken. These refugees are not adequately screened. No one can honestly say these people will or will not cause harm to our citizens. It is NOT a decision for a mayor or any other elected office holder to make for the citizens of their state. These are not issues far fetched from happening as they are happening already.

Is your posture killing you?
Writing this column each week comes with the challenge of finding interesting and relevant content, which is not easy. Since the spectrum of all things health related is very vast, it does not usually take me long to find an important aspect of health to cover. Good posture or the lack of good posture is one of those topics that should be important to all of us. With so many of us working long hours in an office or clinical environment, that lends ourselves to chronic poor postural habits. I think it is pretty important to understand the impact posture has on your health.

Our state is working hard to boost our college go-on rates and IDeal is happy to celebrate some success stories that have been enabled by Idaho’s 529 College Savings Program.

IGNITE: Time for facts
Mr. David Lyons’ Sept. 21, letter to this publication regarding ignite cda’s management of financial resources contains inaccurate information that requires correction. Ignite cda administers two urban renewal districts: the Lake District and the River District. As of Aug. 31 of this year, the River District had available cash assets of approximately $6.6 million and the Lake District had available cash assets of approximately $4.0 million. Mr. Lyons incorrectly stated that this entire $10.6 million of available cash assets could be used to pay off the existing $8.7 million Lake District bond. This cannot happen since each district is a separate legal entity and funds from one district cannot be used to pay for debt obligations in the other district; therefore, the River District funds totaling $6.6 million cannot be used to pay off any portion of the Lake District bond.

OPINION: Exploring the Great Burn
Nearly every weekend of this summer, I have ventured up into the heart of the Great Burn. Heart Lake. Dalton Lake. Cache Creek. Goose Lake. North Fork Fish Creek. West Fork Fish Creek. This area is no Glacier National Park; you may see five cars at the trailhead, not 300. But the Great Burn offers more than just solitude. The other weekend I descended off the Stateline Trail with a group of volunteers for the Great Burn Study Group — a group that had championed stewardship projects in this wild area for more than 40 years — only to find a moose bathing in a lake. This is not uncommon. The Great Burn provides exceptional habitat: few roads, few people, exposed alpine meadows, ancient cedar forests — it’s the last unprotected link in a chain of wilderness areas and national parks from Banff to the Frank Church in central Idaho. But there is no guarantee that the Great Burn will stay the way it is.

IGNITE: A fiscal rush
The urban renewal agency’s July 31 bank statements show it has five accounts at Washington Trust totaling $11,595,578 — two checking accounts totaling $3,159,797 earning 0.0 percent, and three cash accounts totaling $8,435,781 earning 0.1 percent. With $843,335 in two savings accounts, it has $12,438,913 in cash, earning less than 0.1 percent, just sitting there. Yet, on Sept. 14 at a rush-rush, special meeting, which did not allow public comment, it voted to replace the $8.7 million Washington Trust bond with a new $8.7 million loan, leaving all that cash untouched. So the urban renewal agency gives Washington Trust $11.5 million at less than 0.1 percent, and Washington Trust loans $8.7 million of that back to the agency at 1.25 percent. At the agency’s August meeting, Mr. Berns said there was no hurry to refinance — the interest rate didn’t reset until Sept. 30, and even that “is not a drop dead date, there is latitude.”

I wonder how far they are willing to go with the indebtedness of this city and then tell us they have to raise our taxes again? Thank you again for your letter on how they’re pulling the wool over our eyes.

Fiber is your friend

The realities of leg cramps
Most of us have experienced it at some point; that crazy charley horse that wakes you out of a dead sleep with excruciating pain in your leg or foot. According to the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, about one in every three adults is affected by muscle cramps in their lower limbs. In many cases, the pain is temporary and goes away on its own, but for some the cramps interfere with sleep, quality of life and daily activities.

Trump violates fundamental principle of democracy
Last January, before the first primaries and caucuses, I predicted in a luncheon talk before the Idaho Falls Rotary Club, that Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump would become the candidates of their respective parties in the 2016 presidential campaign. Jaws dropped when I explained why Trump would defeat a field of 15 GOP candidates, most of whom enjoyed considerable experience in American politics and governance.

Trying something new - just once
Last week we attended Opera Coeur d’Alene’s production of The Barber of Seville. Mary and I have long been fans of opera in general, but we especially have loved opera here in our own town. The caliber of performers and the opera performances here is truly extraordinary. We have found though over time that there are many preconceived thoughts about opera and whether or not an individual will “like” it. The hurdle though is getting someone to try opera. Like so many things in the big world of wine there are notions about many wines that if you can get consumers past an idea to the point of actually trying something new, they are surprised at how much they enjoy it!

Stress and dreams
Last night, while walking through the halls of my school, I noticed a small light coming from a slightly open door. Peeking into the room, I am greeted with the instantaneous laughter of 30 fourth-grade students, pointing at my half-naked body standing before them in only underwear, a neck tie and flip-flops. Looking down at the target of their amusement, I quickly attempt to cover my body with an anti-bully poster ripped from the wall and back out of the room as fast as I can.

Opinion: Bad city process promises a bad decision
Tonight the City Council will make a bad decision. Tonight, City Council is being asked to annex portions of Blackwell Island, Lake Coeur d’Alene and the Spokane River and will make a bad decision because they must follow a bad process. It is a bad process because the Planning Department has already granted a PUD (Planned Unit Development) for some of this property before it is even in the City and if the Council annexes the property it comes into the City subject to the terms of the PUD. (Strange that the Planning Commission, which is not elected, determines the future of a property that is not even in the City.) Council will probably tell you they cannot discuss the PUD because it was not appealed and they will simply be looking at the annexation request.

POLL: Flawed and frustrating
It is a disgrace that your online election poll only gives three choices: “Trump, Clinton, or Mickey Mouse.” By failing to give realistic coverage to leading third party candidates such as Gary Johnson and Jill Stein you are failing in your basic journalistic duty to inform the public. For this reason it is looking doubtful that any third party candidate will break the 15 percent threshold in national polling that is required in order to participate in the debates.

It takes a village to write this column
For the past week I’ve been dogged by a bad cold that sent me to bed for a few days and left me tired and under a self-imposed exile from being out and about much. So on Monday evening I made this post on my Facebook page: “I figure I've written well over a thousand columns in the last 26 years. I'm often asked how I come up with things to write about every week. Short answer ... whatever amuses, annoys or inspires me. Question for my local village — what has amused, annoyed or inspired you in our community this past week?”
Obstructive sleep apnea and driving
A simulation study by Dr. Akshay Dwarakanath, Dr. Mark Elliott, and colleagues at St. James’ University Hospital in Leeds, U.K., to show the risk for people with untreated obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) was recently presented. The presentation was before the European Respiratory Society International Congress. A driving simulator was used that measured the ability of the driver to stay in his or her lane.
Nutritional craziness: Kitchen transitions
To live in this day and time of nutrition is crazy making! What ever happened to the days of simplicity? You ate what you grew or raised, exchanged some food with neighbors, cooked it at home, and that was about it. Of course you also dealt with times of famine that most of us have never experienced. But today, we have such a tremendous variety of food that comes from all over the world, that it boggles the mind.
Discussion of students, homework
I’ve worked in education since 1996 and from my first classroom to today, the discussion of homework is forefront in the conversation of a quality education. To offer homework, no homework, grade homework or require homework; the conversation is always contentious and often unfounded in research.
BEWARE: Social insecurity
In the age of minimum payments, zero down and line of credit on everything our generation has been enslaved by the lie that the FICO lord is their index to affordability, financial success and that putting off until later is acceptable:

There is no one who will work harder to improve the quality of education in our great state than Paul. We need to focus on our future and elect Republican Paul Amador for House Seat 4B.

Obstructive sleep apnea and brain damage
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a chronic condition in which there are repeated blockages in the throat causing pauses in breathing. If there are more than five of these events per hour of sleep, each event lasting 10 seconds or longer, a patient is diagnosed with OSA. Some patients have events every minute during sleep; some have events lasting 60 seconds or longer. We have patients whose events last longer than 90 seconds. And most of these patients are unaware of this deadly condition. A patient whose events lasted over 90 seconds was completely unaware of OSA and only came in for a consultation because his wife couldn’t stand for his loud snoring any more.

Hard truth about weight loss
Recently I was reading information posted from one of my go-to health and wellness professionals on six effective foods to eat for weight loss. I was surprised and a bit taken back by the somewhat generic information with little supporting evidence to how and why these foods actually promoted weight loss. I would go so far to say it was a bit reckless for a prominent and well-read health expert to offer up these foods in such a misinformed way.

Ivar Nelson and Patricia Hart will present “The CCC in Idaho: Building Our State While Supporting People in Hard Times” at the Coeur d’Alene Public Library, 702 E. Front Ave., Thursday, Sept. 8, at 7 p.m. The Civilian Conservation Corps, an integral part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal, was a public relief work program that operated in the U.S. from 1933 to 1942. Designed to create jobs for young men during the Great Depression, it also developed a workforce to conserve and develop natural resources in rural government-owned lands. In Idaho, it not only changed the lives of the workers, but made a mark on the vitality of the state’s economy and society.
