PREP SOCCER: Timberlake girls tie Charter with late goal
• GIRLS SOCCER
COEUR d’ALENE — The host Coeur d’Alene Charter Panthers jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a goal by Eliason Cherstrom in the 12th minute — one minute after a Sandi Faulkner goal opened the scoring — but a late goal by Timberlake’s McKenna Hughes led to a 2-2 Intermountain League draw on Tuesday at Community United Methodist Church Field.
The game was a matchup of the top two teams in the IML. Coeur d’Alene Charter was runners-up at state last year; in 2014, Charter beat Timberlake in the state title game.
“I couldn’t be more proud of my players for the way we played in the first half and handled being up 2-0 for most of the half,” Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Stacy Smith said. “Problem is in soccer, 2-0 is a dangerous lead. It was the tale of two halves, at least in front of the goal. We continued to maintain a strong offensive presence, but really struggled with finishing in the second half. We had a few wide and several right of the keeper. It’s tough to walk away from a 2-2 game against a team like Timberlake and be disappointed, but I know that was the mood of the team. Hopefully, we get to face them again and earn the right to walk away with a different feeling.”
Allison Kirby scored an unassisted goal in the 46th minute for Timberlake (4-1-1, 4-0-1 IML), which beat Coeur d’Alene Charter 2-1 in its season opener on Aug. 23 in Spirit Lake.
“I was not happy with our first half at all at any level,” Timberlake coach Steve Michael said. “Charter capitalized on some mistakes we made and got out to an early lead. At halftime, we did a reality check with each other and I asked them if they wanted to play, or just finish the match out. It was nice to come back and tie it up and finish the match.”
Coeur d’Alene Charter travels to Kellogg on Thursday.

SPOKANE VALLEY — The Timberwolves gave up six goals in a game for the first time in 13 seasons, in a nonleague loss to the Bears at Central Valley High.
“I need to do a better job of preparing them for quality opponents, and they need to step up, and they need to play,” Lake City coach Matt Ruchti said. “When you play even opponents, games can go either way, and we weren’t ready to play. And I take responsibility.”
Lake City (4-1) fell behind 4-1 at halftime. CV’s second goal, which came one minute after the first, and its fourth goal, which came two minutes after the third, both were the result of Lake City players making plays on the ball, but having the bounce off them to a Bears player for a scoring opportunity.
“By all means we did not play well, but some of those goals were weird,” Ruchti said. “Just bad deflections, two times in a row.”
It was the third time in the recorded history of Lake City girls soccer that the T-Wolves gave up six goals in a game. The last time was Oct. 16, 2003, when Sandpoint won 6-0.
