Miss Idaho set to shine on the other boardwalk
Hurricane Hermine pummeled Florida and the East Coast over the weekend, bringing blustery winds and storm surges to Atlantic City where Miss Idaho Kylee Solberg and women from around the country are vying for the Miss America crown.
I’ve been keeping up with the activities on Kylee’s Miss Idaho Facebook page and it’s obvious the show must go on. They’ve been taping a lot of the promos which will be shown on the national broadcast on Sunday evening on ABC, KXLY in our neck of the woods.
Saturday is the traditional Show Your Shoes Parade on the historic Atlantic City boardwalk and Miss Idaho will be sporting spectacular high heels designed and created by her high school friend, Hannah Leonard. On the Fourth of July in Coeur d’Alene, when Kylee passed by the announcer’s skybox during the parade, I asked her to show me her shoes, which she did with a smile. So she’s practiced and ready for the tradition that began in Atlantic City in 1921.
Such an exciting experience for the hometown girl to be part of the Miss America tradition. She told me before she left for the pageant that she’s paid for two years at North Idaho College and her first year at BSU with scholarships earned through the Miss America state preliminary programs. It’s not too much of a stretch to think that Kylee Solberg just might become the first to bring the Miss America crown home to Idaho!

On Sunday night my friend Loretta Reed, a self-described Food Network junkie, was watching the show Cooks vs. Cons (referring to amateur cooks, not convicts!) and spotted a local contestant. David Adlard, owner and chef at Candle in the Woods, was competing as a cook in Season 2, Episode 9, Chowder Chowdown. He didn’t win the prize money but Loretta said he was quite a character. A brief video of his gourmet wine and dinner restaurant in Athol was shown at the end of the episode.

I’d like to give out a group Good Sport Award to the hundreds of kids, from kindergartners to seniors in high school, who let their parents take first day of school photos on Tuesday to post on Facebook. I enjoyed seeing so many smiling faces on a drippy dreary morning!

Mary Rawlsky, the tennis pro at The Club at Blackrock, is also a member of the U.S. Tennis Association board of directors so she and Andy Stidham spent several days in New York City for the U.S. Open. It was a star-studded experience for tennis fans. On the practice courts or in the National Tennis Stadium the pair watched the Williams sisters, Serena and Venus and even legend Martina Navratilova at play. Actor Alec Baldwin is also a fan and was seen throughout the week, including seated near Andy in the lobby.
