PREP SOCCER: Viking boys pass 5A IEL test, beat rival T-Wolves

COEUR d’ALENE — Short one senior because of ACT testing, the Coeur d’Alene High team turned to its youth in a 5A Inland Empire League match on Saturday.
And the young guys got it done as the visiting Vikings beat the Lake City Timberwolves 3-2 at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex.
Senior Austin Garitone had two goals — both coming in the first half — and an assist in the second half for Coeur d’Alene, which was without senior midfielder Justin Kofmehl, who missed all but 15 minutes of the match due to his ACTs.
“It was good seeing our young guys step up and not be aware of just how young they were as far as experience goes,” said Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Lake, who started seven underclassmen in the match. “We started really fast against them and should have had another goal in the first five minutes. We missed a couple of 1v1s with the keeper, and need to do a better job of closing the door on teams and finishing our chances.”
Cameron Dance scored in the 55th minute for Coeur d’Alene (3-0-2, 1-0-1 5A IEL), which hosts Lewiston on Wednesday.
Travis Swallow had a goal and an assist for Lake City (3-2, 2-1), which travels to Post Falls on Tuesday.

“We just had a lot of constant pressure in their area,” Post Falls coach Gabe Lawson said. “We were pressing the ball and got a chance. Damon (Gilmor) crossed it through traffic and McKie put it away with a diving header. It was a well-earned goal.”
