COEUR d’ALENE — Freshman forward Muganza Katanga scored twice on assists from former Lake City High standout Alec Maldonado to lift the Cardinals past the Chukars in a Northwest Athletic Conference match at Eisenwinter Field.

“It’s definitely helpful to have Muganza back,” NIC men’s coach Ken Thompson said. “He was able to get two goals in his first match of the season, so he’s a big presence in the lineup. Hal Pence had a couple of good throws that went to Alec and they were able to connect on some scoring chances. Having some contributors back from injury, it was adding more firepower more than anything. It really takes the heat off some of the guys that have been a focal point and makes us more balanced as well.”

NIC (3-5-2, 3-3 NWAC) travels to Columbia Basin College of Pasco, Wash., on Saturday.

Treasure Valley is 2-6-2, 1-4-1.

First half — 1, NIC, Muganza Katanga (Alec Maldonado), 22:00. Second half — 2, NIC, Katanga (Maldonado), 86:00.

Shots on goal — TVCC 2, NIC 5.

Saves — TVCC, Flavio Betencourt 3; NIC, Garrett Boyce 2.
