Enith Lenz, 89, passed away peacefully on Dec. 19, 2019. In her last few days here on earth she was surrounded in love by her nine living children, family and friends. They came to pay tribute to the wonderful mother, grandmother, sister and friend that she was to each one of them. Just like the days of sitting around her kitchen table drinking coffee, telling stories, joking and laughing, her family came to be with her one more time to honor her special place in their lives. Enie, as she was lovingly called, was a blessing to all who knew her.

Injuries hurt 'Hawks more than the loss
You know what?
White Christmas now officially iffy
As of this writing late last week, it looked like there was a chance that we would get another white Christmas across North Idaho. If there is snow on ground on Christmas Day, I don’t expect it to be much, perhaps an inch at best in the downtown area. Just like last year, it’s going to be close.

ZONING: Dock request is lacking
Zoning is a major decision made by government. Zoning establishes land value and sets a precedent for development. The test for approving zoning is compatibility. Is the zoning compatible with existing zoning and uses in the area? If it is, then any use permitted by the zoning designation should be acceptable.

IMPEACHED: Feelings quite clear
Political correctness is such a priority today our mainstream media should be obliged to also watch what is printed and said. For example, while it is technically correct that the president of the United States was impeached by the U.S. House of Representatives, it is much more correct to say that he was impeached by the U.S. House of Representatives members who were Democrats.

The case against re-entry
I have followed the prisoner release facility being proposed for Kootenai County, and have been concerned with the misleading way that the proponents of the facility have been presenting their arguments causing confusion with dueling statistics. The proposed facility would be a minimum security prison, and would have 130 beds, but we are to take comfort from the fact that only 100 prisoners would receive early release per year into our community according to the Idaho Department of Correction director. Even if the program was 12 months long, 100 releases out of 130 participants would result in only 77% of those placed in the program being graduated. Other facilities have had prisoners “walk away,” a euphemism for escape!

Do you have unsolved pain in or near a joint? Is that pain worse with movement or pressure? You may have bursitis. Bursitis is the irritation and swelling of a bursa, one of the many fluid filled sacs that help with cushioning and gliding between various tendons and bones in the body. Bursitis is a fairly common cause of pain that, in my experience, is often overlooked in the process of diagnosing or ruling out more severe mechanical complications in the body. Bursa near your shoulder, elbow and hip and are the most commonly affected by bursitis, but any of the approximately 160 bursa in your body can be affected, including those at the back of your heel and under the ball of the foot.

Holiday stress management: Biggest causes of stress, anxiety
The holidays can be a joyous and wonderful time, but there’s no denying that holiday stress can sometimes creep up on even the most calm and organized among us. Holiday parties, family get-togethers and other holiday activities can all be fun, but the added demands on our time and attention can all contribute to holiday stress. And then there are disruptions in regular schedules, travel, preparing meals and managing houseguests, and having less time for yourself. You have a perfect recipe for stress and anxiety.

Stand tall to defend public art
At its best, public art has the transformative potential to spark community engagement and create a sense of place. On any given day, you can see a child gravitate joyfully to the Mudgy and Millie moose at Independence Point or on Sherman Avenue. Functional but drab utility boxes are now reimagined with vibrant colors, many displaying the work of students. Storm drain murals serve the dual purpose of city beautification and raising awareness of what flows into our lake. Take a walk down Front Avenue to the library, and you will discover bronze statues that pay tribute to Idaho’s rich history of loggers, farmers, miners and construction workers.

Do you have degenerative disc disease?
Degenerative disc disease, or DDD, can occur in any area of the spine, but it is most commonly found in the lumbar spine. Contrary to its name, it is not actually a disease, but rather a condition where discs “degenerate” and lose height and flexibility. Discs have a very limited blood supply and the center of the disc is about 80% water. With age and different traumas, the disc can dry out and shrink, which results in a loss of disc height and flexibility. Once the disc is injured, it cannot repair itself easily and this can lead to a multitude of symptoms.

I’m new to the Coeur d’Alene Press. Overall, I’ve found the articles interesting and informative. But like Jerry Weaver (who sent in a letter on the World/Nation section), I too have found the titles and gist of the articles to be oddly biased in opposition to Trump. When reading “impeachment” articles, it’s frustrating to come across statements that are misleading or presenting an obvious anti-Trump tone.

Losses
Each year as the year-end approaches various publications will write of the losses their industry endured over the last year. They do it at the Oscars and it is always one of the more touching moments in the broadcast. The Wine Spectator covers the passing of industry giants throughout the year, then following up with a more extensive piece at year-end. This past year we lost two great members of our community, who while they were not involved in the wine industry, they were avid consumers of wine, and wine knowledge. They truly enjoyed it as much as any wine professional. Many of you likely knew them, or at least recognized them from The Dinner Party community as they frequently attended our events. For Mary and I we were proud to call them both friends, and enjoyed more than a couple glasses of wine over the years with both of them.

Hanks takes a beautiful trip to the 'Neighborhood'
Last year’s documentary, “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” (which landed at #1 on my Press list of best movies of 2018) does an excellent job of highlighting the life and impact of the beloved TV host. “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” directed by Marielle Heller (last year’s “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”) and featuring Tom Hanks as Mister Rogers, is more of an emotional companion piece to the documentary. Acupuncture: Science-based medicine or Hokum?
Think about this for a moment: does the placebo effect exist in animals? I’m inclined to think not. It is popular to write off the benefits of acupuncture as being a placebo effect, but if that is true then why is veterinary acupuncture used on a wide range of animals, from horses to cats, with extraordinary results? I admit, much of the world of acupuncture seems obscure to the untrained ear, and thus the ultimate question I usually get is, “does acupuncture work and how?” The systems of acupuncture were created through rigorous observation of the body; I would venture to call it the original evidence-based medicine. Acupuncture is just a component of Chinese Medicine, a comprehensive medical system incorporating nutrition and herbal remedies among other adjuncts. Many of its observations, dating back several millennia, are being confirmed by modern biomedicine on a daily basis.
