RODEO: Worthy of coverage

| December 13, 2019 12:00 AM

The National Rodeo Finals is going on in Las Vegas, Dec. 5-14. This is the world series (super bowl) of rodeos with $10 million in prize payout. Mark Nelke, sports editor, has completely ignored this event. Not only has he ignored the National Rodeo Finals but there has been little to no coverage of our local rodeo at fair time. There has been a few pictures, but no details as far as contestants coverage and scores. This is a well-attended event and deserves better reporting on Mr. Nelke’s part.

More coverage is given to other events in our city such as “Ironman” races, various bike and runner events. Rodeos are a national heritage and a western tradition for many years and used to be a well-documented highlight in Coeur d’Alene. I have been a participant in our local rodeo during the 1980s. I am disappointed on the lack of coverage and how our western traditions have been ignored by The Press and Mr. Nelke. Maybe Mr. Nelke is a transplant from another area that doesn’t recognize western traditions. I have been a local resident for more than 50 years.
