Lake City gets good draw, romps in home duals

COEUR d’ALENE — In wrestling, to determine which weight the dual starts at, they hold a blind draw beforehand.

Once it was determined Lake City’s home opener was starting with the upper weights — 160- and 182-pounds — Timberwolves coach Corey Owen knew his team was about to start the season right.

Matthew Whitcomb (182), Mahlon Clark (220), Logan Parson (220) and Owen Hughes (285) picked up wins, all by pin in duals against Medical Lake and West Valley on Thursday night.

“They’re the experience and anchors of the team,” Owen said. “They’re solid and we were lucky to start off in the upper weights. They got us rolling in both duals. I knew when the season started, if we can draw anything 160 and up, I know we’re going to get off to a good start.”

Lake City competes in the Owen Invitational — formerly the Polson Invitational — today and Saturday at Salish Kootenai College in Pablo, Mont.

ST. MARIES — The 2A Lumberjacks hit seven free-throws in the final quarter, five coming in the final minute to pull away from the 4A Bulldogs in the nonleague opener for both schools.

“It was a good game, and back and forth the entire way,” said St. Maries coach Bryan Chase, whose team finished runner-up in the state 2A tournament last March. “We just made some free throws down the stretch. It was a lot closer than the score indicates.”

Sophomore guard Coleman Ross had 16 points, junior Randie Becktel 13 points, 10 rebounds and freshman Greyson Sands four points, three rebounds and four steals for St. Maries, which hosts Prairie on Saturday.

“I was proud of how the kids competed tonight,” Chase said. “It wasn’t easy, and we made some defensive stops in the fourth quarter and did the little things it takes to beat a team like that.”

Ryan Roos scored 10 points for Sandpoint, which hosts Shadle Park tonight.

“They’re a good team,” Chase said of Sandpoint. “They’ve got some good guards and some big posts. They’re going to be a good team this year.”
