Lakeland takes two duals from 5A foes

- WRESTLING

COEUR d’ALENE — Lakeland came away with a pair of dual wins against 5A programs, beating Coeur d’Alene 45-34 and Lake City 46-33 at Elmer Jordan Court on Wednesday night.

“Overall, all the teams were banged up and battling the flu,” Lakeland coach Rob Edelblute said. “Against Lake City, we got down 33-0, and it was pretty concerning because some of the kids weren’t wrestling to their full potential. And it was frustrating to see that. From 106 to 170, we came firing back, the kids stepped up and we got a lot of pins. Against Coeur d’Alene, we started on a really good note and some of our younger guys got some big wins for us.”

Lake City battled back to beat Kellogg 51-33 to go 1-1 on the night.

“We’re making little position mistakes that equal big points in big matches,” Lake City coach Corey Owen said. “We’re just making mistakes and hopefully we’ll correct it and fix it. I told our guys that if we’re making these mistakes in the (wrestling) room, they’re going to find their way to the mat.”

Coeur d’Alene beat Kellogg 64-12 in its other dual of the night.

“Kellogg has a real scrappy team, and we had to wrestle hard to beat them,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “We had some chances to win the Lakeland dual, but just made some rookie mistakes. We had a lot of positives and negatives that we’ve got to work on in the room. We’ll keep plugging away and we’ll be right there in the end. I thought both Hunter (Schueller) and Drew (Roberts) wrestled really well.”

Individual results from some matches were not available at press time.

All four teams will compete in the 49th annual Tri-State Invitational starting at 10 a.m. on Friday at North Idaho College.
