Sandpoint keeps it going, topples Kellogg
SANDPOINT — After starting the season 1-3, Sandpoint has found its rhythm and won three of its last four games, beating Kellogg 46-41 on Saturday night in nonleague play at Les Rogers Court.
Sandpoint coach Will Love challenged his team to hold Kellogg to 35 points in the game and the Bulldogs nearly delivered.
“I was really pleased with what we were able to do defensively tonight and that certainly put us in a position to win the game,” Love said. “Kellogg did a good job of getting us out of our offense and what we want to do ... so we started to press,” Love said about his team’s third quarter performance.
This allowed the Wildcats to climb back into the game and eventually narrow Sandpoint’s lead to 3 points with under four minutes left.
With the offense struggling, the Bulldogs needed someone to step up and make a play to avoid letting the game slip away.
The phone rang and senior Maddie Morgan answered, burying a 3-pointer to stop the Wildcats momentum.
Senior Dawson Driggs led the Bulldogs with 16 points and three steals and junior Kaylee Banks added seven points.
Sophomore Darian Hill scored 11 points for Kellogg and seniors Jaron Figueroa and Lora Allred each tallied 8.

SPIRIT LAKE — After the host Tigers rallied to take the lead with a minute left, a late East Valley 3-pointer resulted in the second one-point loss in three nights for Timberlake.
“We’ve lost the last two games by a total of two points, so that’s a little rough,” Timberlake coach Matt Miller said. “But the girls fought hard to come back, and there’s definitely some things we can build on.”
The Knights scored 18 first-quarter points, then closed out the second quarter with eight points in the final two minutes to lead 33-24 at intermission. But the Tigers (4-4) outscored their guests 15-5 in the third quarter to get back in the game.
“We made a really good run in the third quarter, then took the lead. We led by one point with a minute left,” Miller said.
Unfortunately for Timberlake, an East Valley steal was followed by Ellie Syverson’s 3-pointer, putting the Knights ahead for good, 51-49. The Tigers were forced to foul, and a couple made free throws allowed East Valley to withstand a late Timberlake 3-pointer.
Brie Holecek scored 19 points for the Knights.
Brooke Jessen led all scorers with 20 points, and teammate Taryn Soumas added 17 for Timberlake, which travels to Coeur d’Alene on Tuesday.

“Melody Loutzenhiser was the key for us tonight,” Lakeland coach Steve Seymour said. “All six of her assists came in the first half. She did a really good job of leading the break, and finding the open girl.
“Defensively, we did a nice job keeping them in front of us; we’re getting a little better defensively every game,” he added.
