I’m not surprised Forrest Mize turned down a deal with Kootenai County prosecutors that would have had him pay a $200 fine in exchange for a guilty plea. Mr. Mize isn’t guilty of anything. He shot a wolf which he perceived as a threat to his dogs, and quite possibly, himself. His decision to purchase a wolf tag after the fact resulted in the ridiculous charge of possessing a wolf without a tag. If one applies the logic of the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, anyone who ventures into an area where wolves may be encountered should possess a wolf tag, in the event they have to protect themselves or their pets by shooting a wolf.

On Jan. 24, a My Turn printed in The Press called for a Constitutional Amendment to ensure complete parental control over the upbringing and education of their children. Its rationale for this action was that God had ordained it. Further, the author seemed to think it was an inherent right of American parents. This is dangerous, it would require changes to at least two existing amendments and risk the safety of our children.

I've been thinking a lot today. What allows one to have a privileged life while another suffers daily? Why might I miss home when I sleep in my own bed every night? What makes me giggle when my wife enters the living room in the morning with a cute dance and an, "I love you?" How much of life will I be allowed to inhale as I reach middle-age and inch closer to my demise? Why does my stomach knot in gleeful anticipation when I know my daughter and granddaughters are coming over for the day? This rollercoaster of thought makes me feel alive!

The wines of Piedmont
In the northwest corner of Italy, tucked between the borders of France and Switzerland, lies the Italian wine-growing region of Piedmont. The Italians produce some of our favorite wines, with many varietals coming from all parts of the country: from Piedmont and the Alto Aldige in the north, through Tuscany and Abruzzo in the middle of the country, to the southern appellations of Puglia and Sicily. We know many of them, but perhaps the least well-known and most expressive come from Piedmont.

Road blocks
We live on a road that is narrow and winding, with no guardrails, and not a lot of room for error when you are driving. There is little to no space to go around something if something gets in your way. We share the road with turkeys, deer, elk, moose and bobcats. One summer a young moose trotted along in the road in front of me for a mile or more in no hurry, unafraid of me in my car behind him. Of course, I couldn't believe that I was driving behind a moose and unable to go around him. Every time I thought I would, the road would curve in such a way that it was too dangerous; and he seemed to know I was trying to go past him and would swerve out more in front of me. After I got over the fun of watching him, I was ready for him to move out of my way. He didn't, and I had to wait patiently for him to finally move off into the forest.

It doesn't take an expert in psychology to know that drugs (like Oreos) are addictive. Nearly a century of research confirms it, mostly with rats. Why rats? Sure, they're small, cheap, docile, breed faster than rabbits, and are surprisingly cute. More importantly, rat brains and human brains have a lot in common, especially when it comes to chemical reactions and social behavior.

Parental rights: Do we have them in Idaho?
I would like to begin by informing you about the current status of our parental rights in Idaho. In 2011, a bill sponsored by Representative Bob Nonini and Senator Russ Fulcher, and co-sponsored by House majority leader Mike Moyle and Senator Steve Vick, was introduced about parental rights. These representatives encouraged Congress to pass the Parental Rights Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in order to protect the rights of all parents. The idea of this bill was that parents would be ensured the sole right to be in charge of the upbringing and education of their children.

FALCON: Bigger tragedy averted
The woman who beat this pet falcon Hornet, which ended in his death, could have been seriously injured. If Hornet had not trusted people as his friends, this may have had a totally different ending. She wouldn’t have been able to just walk up to it; he would have reacted by taking flight and possibly attacking her. She was lucky in that respect because hawks of any kind can do a lot of damage — they are fast and they know how to instantly kill their prey. Normally you don’t mess around with this breed of bird without protection.

Rethinking weight loss
Embarking on a weight loss program can be fraught with frustration and confusion. Some say that without exercise, you can't lose weight. Yet many don't lose weight exercising and are frustrated. One group says you can't lose weight unless you are vegetarian, vegan, or eat only fruits or vegetables. Others promote low carb, eating only meat and fat, while others insist high carbs and low protein are the best. Still others continue to promote the age old counting calories, don't eat fat, eat-whatever-you-want-as-long-as-it-doesn't-contain-calories philosophy, without regard to the health of it.

The very roots of winemaking are firmly planted in the old world appellations of Europe. Neck pain, headaches, and low back stability
Neck pain and stiffness are very common complaints, and these problems can come and go chronically for years or even decades. Numerous studies point to exercises and chiropractic care as two of the best approaches for gaining control over this common, potentially long-lasting, and sometimes disabling condition. However, focusing only on the neck may not be the best approach, because the management of weak pelvic and low back-stabilizing muscles can have significant benefits for those suffering from neck pain.

Headline, “Wolf shot by hiker on Rathdrum Mountain.”
RIGHTS: It's not just four words
Seeking to protect the civil rights of minorities is an admirable, even noble goal. Our forefathers recognized that democracy is not possible without the protection of the rights of the individual. But is it really wise to add “sexual orientation” and “gender equity” to the Idaho Human Rights Act? It brings to mind the tragic death of Leelah Alcorn, the transgender teen from Cincinnati. I can’t imagine the depth of depression she must have felt to take her own life.

FALCON: Killed by a sick person
I was sickened when I read Saturday’s front page story about Hornet the Falcon. What kind of a person beats a bird to death? Would she kill a bear that was hunting a salmon? Or a fox eating a rabbit? What was her reason for doing this?
New year addiction
The new year is a time of beginnings, a time for change, a time to resolve to become a better you. Excitement envelopes our body as we envision the new us we hope to become in 2015.

WOLF: More on Mr. Mize
I read with interest the Jan. 14 article regarding the wolf shot on Rathdrum Mountain by Forrest Mize and the subsequent letters to the editor by other interested people. Clearly the newspaper is a valuable method of transmitting information. It is also, typically, one side of the story. Being curious, I often wait patiently and quietly for the other side of the story before I fully believe the initial reported event.

MLK: Refresher on civil rights
As we approach the birthday of MLK Jr. it’s a good time to pause and look back at the time we’re celebrating. The most powerful but little recognized element in the Civil Rights movement was television. Before Rosa didn’t go to the back of the bus, there had been 150 years of civil rights activity, beginning with the early abolitionists and permeating numerous areas: Education, religion, economics, the arts, politics, etc. But without television, word of this movement traveled slowly; there was little public knowledge of it and it was not taught in schools. But when the bus driver threatened to have Rosa arrested, she quietly said the four powerful one-syllable words, “You can do that” and he did, and through television it was seen around the world. That was the incendiary event that exploded into what became known as the Modem Civil Rights movement.

The cost of obesity
This week, I would like to touch on the sensitive subject of obesity. The costs of obesity to our health are widely known, such as diabetes, heart disease and some forms of cancer. One set of culprits that drives obesity is found in the sugars, sweeteners and processed foods we eat. The other big factor to weight gain and obesity is a sedentary lifestyle. The basic premise to this is our bodies store fat so effectively that when we eat more calories then we burn, we gain weight. I will come back to these points later in the column.

There was a story in the Jan. 12 Press that said Idaho's public schools get a "D." On the cover of the Jan. 13 paper, Gov. Otter plans to seek more funding for schools. Throwing more money is always the first plan of action but in the end does not solve the problem. Look to private schools, they accomplish more with less. In private schools, they spend less per pupil and have far better results. Look for reasons why they do better.

For most wine consumers, as they move beyond their introductory phase with wine and really start to embrace and explore all the possibilities, we start to think about keeping some bottles on hand. Nutrition and pregnancy: What you need to know
Pregnancy can be one of the most delightful times in a woman's life. It's also one of the more important times to pay attention to nutrition. A well-balanced diet rich in nutrients will promote the proper growth and development of your baby. I'm sure you've heard the term "eating for two;" however, this doesn't mean double the calories. What it means is whatever food you eat during pregnancy is the main source of nutrients for your baby.
Progress, not perfection
Discipline is described as the ability to obey the rules or a code of behavior. It is the practice of training people, or teaching them direction, order and regulations. It is a way to control aspects of our life that might get out of control. If you forget your keys all the time, you decide to have a clip that attaches them to your belt or your purse. Or maybe if you don't remember what you need to buy at the grocery store, so you post a list that you keep on the refrigerator door. How is it possible that you can come up with easy solutions for these types of things, but when it comes to your health and the choices that regulate your health, you have a much harder time making good choices? Is it because we were never trained in these positive lifestyle choices, or do we know what is best, we just choose not to do them?

Failure can be a good option
In 1860, a 38-year-old man was working for his father, a leather merchant. He kept books, drove wagons and handled hides for about $66 a month. Prior to this menial job, the man had failed as a soldier, a farmer and a real estate agent. Most of the people who knew him had written him off as a dud. Only eight years later, he was elected president of the United States. The man was Ulysses S. Grant.

UNBROKEN: See rest of the story
On Christmas Day we took our family to see the movie “UNBROKEN.” It was a great movie about the human spirit and the desire to live under the most impossible circumstances including unbearable torture. While I highly recommend the story of Louie Zamperini you couldn’t help but feel the producer cut the story short. They could have at least given a summary of the last 65 years of his life. The last 65 years of his life were as thrilling as the earlier years.

DEER: Sign of a bad hunter
I noticed the article on the front page of the Post Falls Press about the buck deer that had been shot with an arrow and is in distress. This is a terrible thing for the animal to have to endure because of some slob who just happens to have a bow and wants to poach a deer out of season. I hope someone will come to this animal’s rescue. All it would take is someone to take responsibility for this poor animal and see to it that this is dealt with as is best for the animal. No ethical hunter would ever do anything like this to our wildlife.

GUNS: Fear and the NRA
NRA guru Wayne Lapierre once gave a most eloquent speech (lol), and stated, “The best defense against a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun!” Well, I’ve been pondering that statement, after the very local tragedy of the 2-year-old and the gun. Some years ago, a similar thing happened at a local market, where a child pulled a loaded gun from under his grandfather’s pillow and a fatality resulted. There was no “bad guy” in these tragedies, but something that should be thought about, from the standpoint of what the NRA once advocated — gun safety rather than gun rights.

VETS: Profiteers should pay
As much as I respect the “Wounded Warriors” organization, they should not be the ones aiding our vets. It should be our past and present presidents and Congress that created, then escalated these wars. It should be corporations, such as Haliburton, that have made billions off these wars. It should be the corporations that build the weapons needed to fight wars. These wars have been very profitable and those that are profiting are the ones that should be paying “dividends” to those “Wounded Warriors” they created.

Wine price misconceptions
Assumptions, opinions, we all have them about most everything, including what wine should cost. Even more importantly, we have them about how a wine should taste when it is "X" dollars. Those assumptions and opinions cut both ways, too. We have all thought or said it during a wine discussion: "there is no way I would pay that much for a bottle of wine, it can't possibly be that good." Surprisingly - or perhaps not so - we have also heard, "there is no way I buy wine that is that inexpensive it must taste terrible." Over the summer, a very good customer of ours went so far as to suggest, "you should charge more for that wine, you will probably sell more of it!"

TV: Dumping Dish over Fox
Many of us are really upset that Dish has dropped Fox News from its programming. Well, I called Dish at (800) 333-3474 and told them I was looking to switch to a carrier that carried Fox. Quit smoking with acupuncture
If you're ready to call it quits when it comes to smoking (or any other addiction for that matter), consider acupuncture. When other methods used fail, many people turn to acupuncture. Increasingly, acupuncture has become the first approach chosen, as more people desire a non-drug, non-chemical approach to quitting. In some states, acupuncture is a treatment that is court mandated for drug addicts because it helps alleviate withdrawal symptoms such as cravings, irritability, anger, anxiety, fatigue and difficulty concentrating. This reduces the recidivism rate (rate at which they resume smoking or drugs again), therefore reducing the re-arrest rate.

How to spend less, but be healthier
With the cost of health care sky rocketing, we are always looking for ways to save anywhere we can. One way we can save money is on our health in 2015. The following data was the result of a seven-year study performed by Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Chicago. The study was conducted by Richard Sarnat, MD, president of Alternative Medicine Integration. Dr. Sarnat later updated the study adding in three additional years of research, and concluded the following. "My research, conducted over a 10-year period utilizing clinical and cost outcomes data from one of the nation's largest insurance underwriters, suggest that the regular utilization of chiropractic could reduce the need for hospitalization, pharmaceutical usage and overall global health care costs by almost 50 percent."

Vis Medicatrix Naturae
Victoria Sweet was a physician in the world of modern medicine in San Francisco, but in her book, God's Hotel, she discovered that premodern medicine had some very important concepts when it came to the power of the body to heal itself. The body appeared to have this natural force or ability to perform a magical act as it was healing itself. The body merely needed the "best" environment in order for this to happen well. In the premodern medicine world they used the natural cures, sunlight, good food, fresh air, exercise, a good night sleep, herbal remedies and the "tincture of time." They felt that as long as it had taken for the disease to come to be with a person, then it would take just as long for the person to be healed of the disease. "Vis Medicatrix Naturae," according to Sweet, is really "the remedying force of your own nature to be itself," to turn back into itself when it has been wounded.

IDAHO: Good, but not heavenly
I have this question about how God loves Idaho more. No, we did not “add the words” or legalize marijuana, but have we provided educational and job opportunities for our young people in this state? How about our willingness to fight major political battles over the kind of education our children receive? Or even of pushing a specific religion in places, where quite frankly it should not be found at all? Or preferring to vote for “religiously minded candidates” for public office, contrary to what is found in the U.S. Constitution? Of deciding that actually paying taxes should be deemed “unconstitutional,” regardless of the fact that, not only do you find it to be a constitutional amendment, even the Bible references taxes more than once. “Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s…”

Which got me thinking about other American place names ... Michigan, for example, is the French twist on the Chippewa "meicigama" (great lake).

Who killed Michael Brown?
As a white man, I must admit that I do not have the same black perspective, but I do not think it was only a policeman's bullets that killed Michael Brown. At 6-foot-4 and 290 pounds, I know what it is like to have a commanding presence that allows one to intimidate. I also remember being 18 years old with a high dose of testosterone that turned my brain to mush. Other than being white, why am I alive and Michael Brown is dead? Surely the policeman's bullets brought an end to his life, but we must not ignore the contributing factors.

Neighborhood of the week: Lake Forest
Sometimes you want to build your dream home, carefully selecting the light fixtures and flooring, choosing the appliances, designing the living space to suit your unique needs. But sometimes, you want to take advantage of a home that's already "broken in" - one that fits your lifestyle without having to spend the time to create it yourself. You want to live in a neighborhood with established landscaping, long-time neighbors, and an existing sense of community - not to mention a centralized location, minutes away from the wide variety of amenities that our area offers.

Former Kootenai County Undersheriff Tad Leach shared this open letter with The Press:

Bruce Nimmo, 85
I want to tell you a bit about my dad, Bruce Nimmo, or as his family called him, Clancy. He passed away this week at 85 years of age. As a young man he was in the army. He served as an MP in Germany for several years. In college, he was a bull rider and downhill ski racer. He climbed telephone polls to work his way through Loyola to become a lawyer. He met and married a red-headed Irish lady, Marylou, my mom. He lived to spend time with his grandson Nick and his granddaughter Kayla, and he was very proud to be a great-grandpa to Owen, Nick and Meghan's son. It was Kayla, a nurse, who took extra special care of him toward the end. He was my husband, Scott's, football buddy. And, he was my dad and my friend.

Honorable Watson, NO honor in your decision! Judge Watson was the presiding judge over our son’s divorce. Divorce is never easy. However, they have no real property or children and both were amicable on what they wanted and agreed upon. Her attorney from day one has been non-responsive to our son’s attorney or the courts. This easy divorce has taken almost four years (again no children or property). Finally, last summer the divorce decree was signed by Judge Watson, and my son’s retirement which is not much was divided amongst them as agreed.
