NIC: Solution to budget woes

| January 30, 2015 8:00 PM

North Idaho College may have to increase tuitions “because we have reached as we far as can go with current levels of funding,” according to the president of NIC.

Perhaps if we would stop the perpetual funding of athletic programs at NIC that has been running a $1 million-plus deficit for 10 years, tuition may not have to be increased. Possibly even decreased for a change.

Community colleges are for skills training and for the first two years of an academic program at a really inexpensive tuition rate. Inflating that for athletics doesn’t show a lot of common sense.

I personally would like to see the athletic programs dropped, not only because of the money drain, but NIC doesn’t even look at local athletes to put in their athletic programs. Most athletes at NIC are imported from other states. Some of them have been lawbreakers and some were felons when they got here.

Dropping these athletic programs would sure make a positive dent in the funding at NIC. Common sense would dictate that solution. However, that is a lost commodity at NIC.
