| January 11, 2015 8:00 PM

* GIRLS

SANDPOINT - Madi Schoening tallied 14 points, seven boards and seven assists, and the Sandpoint Bulldogs ratcheted up the defense, downing Lakeland 49-23 in the 4A Inland Empire League opener for both schools Saturday night at Les Rogers Court.

Lily Martin and Grace Kirscher combined for 19 points, Elani Williams added four points, five rebounds and four steals and Riley Couch eight points and three steals to lead the Bulldogs (9-6), who used a 19-4 third quarter run to blow the game open.

"I liked the way the girls played defense, they made the right adjustments," said Bulldogs coach Duane Ward. "Offensively, our kids ran the half court sets with more patience, getting some easy buckets."

Kaidan Kelsey led the Hawks (5-10, 0-1) with 10 points and six rebounds, Dani Linehan and Savannah Pruitt each grabbed six boards and Emily Vanderhoof had three assists and two steals to lead the Hawks, who trailed by just five at half before struggling to score just nine second-half points.

"We make three out of 17 free throws," lamented Lakeland coach Steve Seymour. "Sandpoint made some good adjustments at halftime and their defense kept us off balance. We didn't match them in the second half."

Lakeland hosts Moscow on Thursday.
