COUNTY: Echeck fee is backwards

Why is the Kootenai County treasurer charging a convenience fee to pay property taxes by echeck?

We have paid property taxes to four other counties in Washington, California, Florida, and Colorado that don’t charge if paying by check.

Paying by echeck actually saves the county the trouble of getting the snail mail payment at the post office box, opening the letter, endorsing the check and depositing the check. Instead the money goes straight into the treasurer’s account. The treasurer does nothing.

If anything, the treasurer should be paying the “convenience fee” to us.
