So, how 'bout those Seahawks!
So you may have heard or hopefully seen one of the most incredible finishes ever in a football game on Sunday. Quite a few local folks had the good fortune of being there in Seattle for all of the action.
Toni and Don Prince are longtime Seahawks fans. Each year, Don meets their sons, Brock and Donny, for the home opener in Seattle as an annual father/son tradition. They've also been to three NFC championship games but this past Sunday's game was a date weekend for the Post Falls couple.
Sans sons, Toni and Don flew to Seattle on Saturday and back home on Sunday. In the meantime they were front and center with the masses for what turned out to be the biggest comeback in NFL conference championship history. Toni is barely getting her voice back from the game and said their Alaska flight home was full of "12th Man" fans decked in green and blue, and those wearing Russell Wilson jerseys were upgraded to MVP status.
Lynda Thurman attended her first Seahawks game on Sunday, and a good game it was. When she turned 65 a few weeks ago, her son, Dustin, and daughter-in-law, Kelly, surprised her with tickets to the NFC championship game. It was also only the third time Lynda had flown. She said the memories of the experience will last a lifetime.
Jaimee Myers and her boyfriend, Grant Cox, didn't attend the game on Sunday but they are headed to the Super Bowl. Optimists, they bought tickets last week before the Seahawks won Sunday's big game.
Rebecca and David Kilmer watched the Seahawks NFC championship game from the Jungle River Bar on the Rio Dulce in Guatemala. They win.
Tomorrow evening I'll be attending the Post Falls Chamber of Commerce's annual community recognition banquet as I have for about 25 years, although since 2008 it's an especially significant event personally. I was emceeing in 2008 when during the evening I felt a bit clammy and muddleheaded, but finished out the night and the presentation of awards. Afterward, I told Bert that I was feeling "odd" and didn't want to go home, I wanted to go to the ER. That decision saved my life.
Within minutes of my arrival at the emergency room, the cardiologist told me the bad news - I was having a heart attack - but the good news was that I was at the hospital. Within the hour I was receiving two coronary arterial stents in the Kootenai Heart Center. I was 55 years old.
Today I'm 62 and since 2008 I've enjoyed 2,559 bonus days. Every day is a blessing for real. My message for women is that we don't have the same symptoms as men do; I had no chest pain at all but I knew something was wrong. Listen to your body!
Heart disease is the No. 1 cause of death for both men and women in the United States. A stunning statistic is that more than twice as many people die every year from heart disease than from ALL forms of cancer combined. February is officially Heart Health Month but today is the perfect time to become aware of the symptoms. Info: www.heart.org.
