PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Lakeland's 'D' stifles Lake City
* BOYS
RATHDRUM - After losing by 17 points at Coeur d'Alene on Tuesday night, the Lakeland Hawks went back to the drawing board.
Or, more precisely, the practice court.
Tyrel Derrick poured in 29 points and Lakeland held Lake City to 12 second-half points in a 68-35 pounding of the Timberwolves in nonleague play Friday night at Hawk Court.
"What coach (Dave) Stockwell challenged them to was, 'we've got to play harder on the defensive end,'" Lakeland assistant coach Bill Ryan said. "When you get that effort on that end, things come a little easier on the other end."
Derrick made 6 of 7 3-pointers for Lakeland (11-5), which made 13 of 26 from behind the arc. Derrick also had six assists and four steals. Jake Ram hit 2 of 3 3s and added 14 points, and Slader Ray grabbed nine rebounds. The Hawks shot 24 of 47 from the floor.
Nick Hancock led Lake City (8-8) with nine points.
"In the second half, we kept them from doing what they wanted," Ryan said. "We put a little pressure on the ball up front, and that prevented them from getting the easy pass inside."
On Tuesday, Lake City plays host to Post Falls, and Lakeland travels to Moscow.

"We just got outhustled in the fourth quarter," Lakeside coach Stacey Sonder said. "We missed a lot of easy shots and were in the double bonus before the third quarter was over. It's just not the kind of game we should be playing right now."
