ELK: Cause of their problems

| January 18, 2015 8:00 PM

Regarding the rescue of two elk by volunteers in Boundary County, the Idaho Department of Fish and Game typically refused to help. Let them drown. “Let nature take its course.”

I’m not familiar with the origin of elk herds in Boundary County, but I’m familiar with the origin of the elk herds in our area. Back in the 1920s, surplus elk from Yellowstone Park were shipped here and released in the Coeur d’Alene, St. Joe and Clearwater drainages.

But Fish and Game has refused to give them hay during heavy snow years when they were starving because it wasn’t natural.

People brought them here so people have an obligation to help them survive.

The Fish and Game department is very good at holding public hearings, listening patiently to all points of view, and then they decide to do nothing.
