Marcia Adrian Galuppo Sloan

| January 20, 2015 8:00 PM

1941 - 2015

Marcia Galuppo Sloan left us in the early evening of Jan. 12, 2015. She was a teacher, a wife, a mother and a very talented, generous, loving and perceptive woman. She was a woman of great faith. Her family, priest and friends were at her bedside in her home as ALS finally took her life.

Marcia was born in Cleveland, Ohio, the fifth child of Louis and Mary Galuppo. At age three, her parents decided to migrate to California and Marcia grew up in south Los Angeles where she attended Washington High School. After her graduation, her parents moved to Tustin, where Louis was a masonry and general contractor.

Marcia attended California State University-Long Beach, graduating in 1963 with a degree in teaching. From 1963 through 1966 Marcia taught in schools in Tustin and Laguna Beach. In 1966 she married Capt. Todd M. Sloan, USMC, and went with him to his duty station at Kaneohe Marine Corps Air Station on Oahu, Hawaii. There she taught in Keolu Elementary School until late 1967 when her husband was ordered to Vietnam. She returned to California and resumed teaching in Tustin.

The Sloans then moved to Charlottesville, Va. where Marcia taught in the Venable School. They would return to California in 1972 and would commence a 26-year period of living in beach communities from Playa del Rey to Malibu to La Jolla.

From there they moved to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. It was there that Marcia contracted ALS. Toward the end of her life she returned with her husband to San Pedro where she could spend her remaining time with her beloved son Mark, his wife Lise and three wonderful grandchildren - Vaughn, Morrison and Archie.

Marcia was a woman of many talents and skills. She managed her husband's law office, created beautiful acrylics of wild animals and flowers, was a marvelous cook specializing in a wide range of cuisines, and was an accomplished interior designer. She loved to travel, and with Todd she visited South America, the Marquesa Islands, New Zealand, Australia, Italy (always Italy) and other points around the globe.

Marcia's quick smile and happy personality led her to make friends easily, and those fortunate people viewed her as their best friend. If someone was in trouble, Marcia rushed to their aid. We are all better because she has been with us.

Her family and her many friends are grief stricken by her departure. Marcia was an amazingly caring and generous woman. No trouble was too insignificant for her to address. She devoted untold time to those in distress. Her family benefited generously from her care and affection.

Marcia is survived by two sisters, Geri Hill and Cara Grimsley, both of whom reside in Hayden Lake, Idaho.

Visitation and Rosary will be conducted from 5-9 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 23, and the funeral Mass will be said the following day at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, at St. Cecilia's Church in Tustin, Calif. Internment will follow at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery, Orange, Calif.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Saddleback Chapel and Mortuary, Tustin, Calif.
