In the fight against breast cancer, it's quality that matters
Receiving a cancer diagnosis is never easy. The emotional shock coupled with the immediate need to schedule medical appointments and begin a life-changing journey is enough to make anyone feel overwhelmed. With an estimated 268,600 new cases of invasive breast cancer to be diagnosed in the U.S. this year, it’s important to know what to look for when choosing a health care team.

What do you get when you drop a pumpkin?
Different approach to back and neck pain
Neck and back pain can be caused by a variety of reasons, ranging in moderate to severe symptoms. No matter what the cause, it is important to receive the proper care you need so that the problem doesn’t get worse or keep returning. Today, many people are under the impression that neck and back issues can only be treated with surgery. The good news is that is not the case and there are several non-invasive ways to treat neck and back pain without resorting to surgery. One of the best non-invasive treatments today is non-surgical spinal decompression. In my experience, I have found it essential to use various modalities in order to help people heal and get the best possible results based on their condition. When helping individuals with disc conditions, I recommend different modalities of treatment to help alleviate acute pain and improve long-term benefits. This multi-step approach addresses different pieces of the puzzle when someone has a herniated disc, and it often starts with spinal decompression.
Your genetics are not your destiny
Genetics have long been discussed in ways that seem to indicate that they determine our fate. Our DNA tends to be thought of as this fixed set of information that is passed down to us from our parents (and it is for the most part). But did you know that our bodies have several mechanisms in play to control how our genes are expressed? The purpose of our DNA is to serve as the code for creating the many proteins necessary for life. According to the National Institute of Health, there are an estimated 20,000-25,000 genes encoding the various proteins that serve to regulate chemical reactions, control the movement of nutrients, create the physical structure of our bodies and perform countless other functions. In much the same way you adjust the volume when you do or don’t like what you hear, epigenetic mechanisms in our cells increase the activity of certain genes when we need more of the corresponding protein, and they turn down the genes corresponding to proteins that are needed less.

As a newcomer to Idaho and Rathdrum I have been delighted to have found a similar lifestyle and many of the same values that I was so blessed and privileged to have grown up with. OPINION: Education funding out of whack
Why don’t Idaho teachers make $216,000 a year? It is a valid question as Idaho spends about $7,500 a year per student, supplemental levies add about $1,500 per student, and the average class size is 24 students. That means that Idaho is spending $216,000 per year on the average classroom of students. But the average teacher pay is $44,000, so where is the other $172,000 going?

GUNS: Control is the real killer
Mass shootings occur in gun-free zones. They occur in schools, churches, shopping centers and in other gun-free public areas rather than at gun shows or around police stations where large numbers of firearms — and people who know how to use them — are known to be. In his article in USA Today, “Opposing view: Guns in schools can save lives,” Dec. 25, 2012, John Lott Jr. writes: “With just one exception, every public mass shooting in the USA since 1950 has taken place where citizens are banned from carrying guns. Despite strict gun regulations, Europe has had three of the worst six school shootings.”

TRUMP: Savior? Not so fast
God Trump has decreed death to sick immigrant kids by sending them back to their shithole countries. This is after sending Christian Arabs home to be killed by Middle East religious zealots. This is after demanding exile of U.S. football players protesting human rights violations. This is after locking up children in border concentration camps. This is after ordering his religious rally congregations to attack any opposing his holy words. A vengeful, punishing, all powerful Trump as God-incarnate for the next 30 years is our submissive, obedient reward and answered prayer. Hail Trump, the self-proclaimed God!
SHARP: Tears of joy, pride
Jeffery, maybe if you knew a bit more about the sacrifice wounded warrior Army Sgt. 1st Class Brian Sharp made for our country, you would come away with a better perspective about what was taking place the day traffic was backed up on the freeway. Perhaps if you could have seen the smile on SFC Sharp’s face when he saw the hundreds of citizens who came out to honor him, it would put a different light on things for you. Conceivably, if you were there among the crowd and saw the tears, pride, respect and unity offered by those standing in the rain, waving their flags and homemade signs it would reach a better place in your heart.
WILDLIFE: Nature abounds in N. Idaho
Dearest Jeffery Coulter,
RIGHTS: Choice of arms is ours
Mr. Don Flemming is correct, it’s all about the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Read the preamble to the Bill of Rights. Most states were not going to sign until the Bill of Rights (the first 10 amendments) were added. The Second Amendment was to protect “the people” from an aggressive government. The flintlock rifle was the high tech weapon of that time as the AR-15 is now.
HAYDEN: Clarifying deputy request
In response to Mr. Coppom’s letter on Sept. 1, I would like to make a few clarifying comments.
HAYDEN: See bigger crime picture
As a citizen of Hayden, it is important to be able to discuss issues. First, this request for an increase in deputies comes directly from our sheriff’s office. Secondly, discussions should be based on fact. Councilmember Roetter is not being transparent in his crime analysis. Knowing the truth, he chose to use a shorter timeline to justify his opinion. Crime statistics over the past 10 years show an increase in crime. Law enforcement feedback has detailed the fact that Hayden does not have 24-hour dedicated law enforcement coverage for its 15,000 citizens.

Faithful Observations
Most people probably know a family that has adopted a child from overseas, often China, Korea, Russia, Guatemala, Ethiopia or similar country. This number peaked at over 20,000 per year in the early part of this decade. For a variety of reasons, these numbers have leveled off. According to Pew Research, only 5,370 adoptions from overseas happened in 2016. Some countries have shut off adoptions to other countries because of reported problems of abuse or even adoptive parents trying to return the child back to their home country.

BUDGET: County gets it right
The most important vote for any elected local official is the budget. Any service industry such as municipal government necessitates possibly 75% of the budget addressing personnel needs. Salaries are always a major concern to remain competitive with other jurisdictions. Not only salaries but there is retirement, health insurance, training, uniforms, equipment and the various supplies. As the population grows or the demographics change, you must ask how does that effect your budget and the services you provide? What technological changes can effect your daily operations in both the number and type of employees required.

POLITICS: Deciding best directions
The Trump presidency has uncovered several weaknesses in the American system of government and, perhaps has shown that a free society, by its very nature, is prone to questioning itself and to learning from its mistakes. Some have said that is, in fact, part of the “experiment” of American Democracy. I think that is true and feel a little embarrassed that as a history student and history teacher, I never quite saw it that way. That could mean that a lot of us might need a periodic wake-up call and, as difficult as it is to experience and to acknowledge, we might be in the middle of one right now.

The Adrenal glands: Delivering more then just a shot of adrenaline
The adrenal glands are best known for producing and releasing epinephrine (adrenaline) and other hormones involved in the fight or flight response, but they also produce a number of other hormones that deliver instructions and information to nearly every tissue and organ in your body. These instructions play a role in everything from regulating our blood pressure and blood sugar to our sleep cycle and the production of our sex hormones, among other things. Three absolutely critical regulatory endocrine glands, the hypothalamus, pituitary and thyroid, are very closely connected to the adrenal glands through various feedback mechanisms.

RIVER'S EDGE: It's not over, folks
Your Aug. 17 article in by Keith Erickson provided an excellent overview of the controversial River’s Edge Apartments development in Coeur d’Alene on the Spokane River. It described how the monstrous “Plan A” with its 680 apartments, in multiple high-rise buildings, was unanimously rejected by both the Planning Commission and City Council, and that a “Plan B” with 29 homes on the riverfront and 250 apartments was later approved. But the “Plan A” is not totally dead. The developer has filed an unusual “Request For Reconsideration” with the Council to reverse their earlier rejection.

Cold laser taking health care to new heights!
Low level lasers are the cutting edge of healthcare. Low level laser therapy, or LLLT for short, has been used worldwide for more than 50 years. There are now more than 2,000 published studies on LLLT and amazingly, zero negative side effects have been reported. And consequently, the Erchonia laser we utilize in our office was the first laser company to get an FDA clearance on Jan. 17, 2002, through clinical trials. We know lasers are traditionally designed to cut and cauterize. These are referred to as “hot” lasers. LLLT uses a cold laser. This simply means that this category of laser does not generate heat. What it does generate is a proven and effective method for increased healing in the body.

BOND: Clearing up smoke and mirrors
Lakeland’s school bond failed miserably last Tuesday and sadly Superintendent Becky Myers erroneously blamed, in part, new ballot disclosures. What a cop out. The same night Sugar Salem in eastern Idaho easily passed a school bond with a bigger disclosed cost on the ballot than Lakeland. A few weeks ago a fire district passed a bond in Bannock County. And Rigby passed a big school bond earlier with the same ballot disclosures.
Good or bad, Disney dominated summer 2019
The all-powerful Disney banked several huge box office successes this summer. “Avengers: Endgame,” “Toy Story 4,” “The Lion King” and “Aladdin” each grossed more than a billion dollars at the worldwide box office, and Disney had a creative hand in the only other billion dollar earner this summer, Sony’s “Spider-Man: Far from Home.”

Most requested, the final chapter: Cabernet
Survey after survey continues to show the two most requested varietals in the U.S. are Chardonnay and Cabernet. We believe much of this is reflexive; consumers know these varietals best, so they are the go-to’s. We find this to be true here in the shop also. When customers purchase wine for a gift, or to bring to an event, they lean to these varietals as they are the most well-known and are perceived to be the most acceptable. Wine enthusiasts can have that argument another time, but it remains the truth of it all. So, here is a lineup of the most popular Cabernets.

PROPOSAL: Is this what we can expect?

SHERIFF'S: Opposed to upcoming ballot
Just for the record, I spent 31 years as a law enforcement officer and a command level Captain with a medium size police department in California. Many were the times that I poured over statistics, crime trends, requests to City Council for additional manpower and justifications for the same. My family and I have lived in Hayden for 17 years and have enjoyed professional and timely response to problems from the Kootenai County Sheriff’s agency. Their response has been timely, dispatchers have been very helpful, and I have noted with pleasure the patrol vehicles that always seem to be traveling the local roads.

Bring on a nice long Indian summer
I don’t see how it’s possible that we’re into September. This had to be the fastest summer ever … at least for me it was. Hope you had better luck.
