JOKES: A real Halloween treat
My wife and I grew up in Des Moines, Iowa. When we moved away many, many years ago, we didn’t realize we were leaving behind a tradition that is apparently (at least up until now) only celebrated in parts of Iowa and Missouri.
Trick or treat was not only a way to see how much unhealthy candy we could collect, but also an opportunity to share your best jokes with the people at the door. Yes, you actually had to tell a joke as your trick in order to earn your treat. We were quite surprised that none of the other places we lived had this entertaining “feature.”
I propose that this become a tradition here in Coeur d’Alene. We already have a daily joke being generated by The Press with the Ghastly Groaner. Jokes are sure easier to find today than when we were kids.
Help bring a little something extra to this special evening. When the kids knock on your door, just ask them what’s their trick or best joke that they know. Let them tell it, and give them their treat. If the folks giving out candy forget to ask, parents with children can help get this going by encouraging their kids when they are standing at the door to say “want to hear a funny joke?”
It’s simple, easy and fun for everyone. Try it. You’ll like it.
