COEUR d’ALENE — As if the first day of school isn’t stressful enough ...

The Coeur d’Alene Vikings and Post Falls Trojans made it a long, stressful night.

Elly Schrader had 17 kills, four blocks and two aces as Coeur d’Alene outlasted Post Falls 23-25, 31-29, 25-16, 21-25, 15-10 in the 5A Inland Empire League opener for both schools Tuesday night at Viking Court.

“I think our blocking was huge, once we got our block dialed in,” Coeur d’Alene coach Carly Curtis said. “And we adjusted our defense, and started picking up more of their attack.”

Taylin Rowley had 18 assists and eight kills for Coeur d’Alene (4-0). Maggie Bloom had 22 digs, Sarah Wilkey 13 digs and two aces, Lili Hare three blocks, Lauren Phillips nine assists, Courtney Garwood nine assists and two aces.

“Post Falls is very scrappy, and they were playing smart,” Curtis said. “They did a very good job on defense, making us work.”

For Post Falls (1-2), Maya Blake had 15 kills and seven aces, Brielle Nagel 13 kills, Ali Carpenter 18 digs, Kassie Gardiner 29 assists, Emily Schlothauer three blocks.

“I thought it was a heckuva battle,” Post Falls coach Matt Barkley said. “They gave us problems with their serving. Maya Blake did a great job attacking the ball, and Ali Carpenter was just a digging machine.”

Coeur d’Alene plays host to Moscow on Thursday. Post Falls travels to Mt. Spokane on Friday.

COEUR d’ALENE — With his team trailing 13-10 in the fifth set, Lake City coach Mike Summers called timeout and changed the momentum of the night.

The Timberwolves responded by scoring the final five points of the match.

“I challenged the girls to step up and do their job,” Summers said. “We had some really good serves and pushed through the last two points. It was a hard fought match. It was our first match, and we were just getting the first-game jitters out.”

Kate DuCoeur had 13 kills and two blocks, Jaya Miller 22 digs for Lake City in its season opener.

“The girls didn’t fold or collapse,” Summers said. “We’re still trying to find our identity, and are going to have to earn it. It was really good to get tested and pushed like that.”
