Idaho’s Akanno, Montana duo earn Big Sky honors
The Big Sky Conference ROOT Sports Offensive Player of the Week honor went to Montana quarterback Dalton Sneed, while Griz return specialist Malik Flowers earned Special Teams honors. Idaho linebacker Charles Akanno was named the conference’s Defensive Player of the Week.
Sneed completed 30 of his 40 passes for a total of 334 yards and four touchdowns to help the Griz dominate Monmouth in a 47-27 non-conference victory. He completed touchdown passes of 23, 9, 5, and 4 yards. The senior finished the game with a career-high completion percentage of 75 percent. Sneed tallied 21 yards on the ground for 355 yards of total offense in the win.
Akanno, a junior, led Idaho to a 35-27 win against No. 11 Eastern Washington. It was Idaho’s first win against an opponent ranked No. 11 or higher since 1999. Akanno registered a career-high nine tackles and assisted on a tackle for loss. He added three pass breakups and three quarterback hurries. Akanno’s forced fumble in the second quarter led to a four-play, 24-yard scoring drive that gave the Vandals a 21-0 lead.
In the third quarter, Akanno’s quarterback hurry led to an incomplete pass on 4th and goal on the Idaho three-yard line that halted the Eagles’ chances of scoring late in the quarter. Akanno and the Vandal defense held Eastern Washington to 95 rushing yards at an average of 3.0 yards per rush.
Flowers sprinted towards the endzone on a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in Montana’s win over Monmouth. It was the second kickoff returned for a score in Flowers’ career. His return was the longest in modern Grizzly history, passing Damon Boddie’s 1993 return of 99 yards at Idaho.
