VETERANS: Not federally respected
On this Memorial Day I found all the recent revealing news concerning Veterans Hospitals so much more than just troubling. A recent AP photo on April 24 of beautiful Taylor’s Checkerspot butterflies on the prairie at a Washington state military base first provoked appreciation of their beauty, then as I read the description under the photo, provoked anger. Suffering from hip pain?
Greater trochanteric bursitis, also known as greater trochanteric pain syndrome, is one of the most common causes of hip pain. While greater trochanteric bursitis affects both active and inactive individuals, it is most common in moderately active, middle-aged females or those who have recently increased their activity level. In all individuals, pain on the outside of the hip from greater trochanteric bursitis can result in a limited ability to lie on the involved side, walk, climb stairs, squat, or participate in recreational activities. To treat greater trochanteric bursitis, physical therapists typically prescribe a combination of stretching and strengthening activities to decrease irritation in the hip and resolve pain.

One man's route to Christian salvation
One thread running through the entire Bible is the universal problem of sin, its consequences, and its ultimate solution. It was the solution part that evaded me for 20 plus years despite a rather diligent study in God’s word. Church answers consisted of a collection of fuzzy logic at best, and always in defense of sin in the lives of professing Christians. Despite a precious nugget of truth here and there, complexities abounded in the Word itself during those years. The salvation revelation that finally emerged after 20 years has not been witnessed since the death of the last apostle around 2,000 years ago. It turns out that God formulated His plan of salvation, and thus it exists in the form of a formula, referred to as THE WAY in both Testaments. I have found when explaining this formula to pastors, and others who feigned interest, they were quick to claim to have always believed that. But if I withheld the explanation until after I had solicited a definition of Christian salvation from them, the formula was always conspicuously absent. My wife’s confidence that this recipe has been lost for 2,000 years has prompted her to offer a hundred dollars to anyone who can show us a Christian author who has included this exact formula in even one book with a copyright after the death of the last apostle and prior to today’s date (and tens of thousands have been written in the last 2,000 years).
Which one of these events are you most looking forward to?

ELECTION: Blame it on low turnout
Following last Tuesday’s election, I saw a particularly telling letter to the editor where the author proclaimed himself to be an Independent. Who also proclaimed his disdain for the GOP closed primary that prevented him from voting for the candidate of his choice. I think for me the bigger issue is the low voter turnout. I have been a Republican for years. After my mom, Grace A. Harman died, and I had an opportunity to move to where I now live, I made certain to register as a Republican again. I also kept the registration paper that was mailed to me over two years ago, and took it along with my ID to my precinct polling place. That’s right, I went to my precinct polling place and voted. Is there some kind of problem with other people registering to vote and then voting?

The proximity principle
This principle, in various studies, suggests that people develop lasting relationships with those in closest proximity to them. Their proximity leads to frequent contact and relationships develop by way of this frequent contact. This principle also applies to real estate - proximity affects value. Property close to a school can bring a higher price than a similar home that is distant to schools, at least for families with school-age children. Homes in proximity to a sewage treatment plant or landfill are not as desirable as a similar home next to a park.

Mentally ill isn't 'crazy'
An estimated 20 to 26 percent of Americans currently live with some form of mental illness, from depression to bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, significantly impacting their lives, as well as those of families and loved ones. Probabilities dictate that each of us is, loves, or has otherwise been close to someone who has a mental illness or condition. Living with a mental illness can be isolating and lonely, even frightening. Much of that is less because of the illness itself, and more because the rest of us don't - or don't want to - understand it.

I appreciated Post Falls Councilman Alan Wolfe’s letter of being excluded, but he actually excluded himself. I disagree with him for not voting because he didn’t want to be a (heaven forbid) Republican-for-a-day. Being adaptable and not so hung-up on party labels is essential if we want participatory government. The GOP’s’ head muckety-mucks are whining because candidates and their voters aren’t being true to some crack-pot (or is it KCRCC-pot?) laundry list of non-negotiable platform planks that have less to do with everyday governing than it does fantasy.

Sorry to my Democratic friends, but the recent trends show this not to be an unreasonable expectation.
PRIMARY: Shut out by the GOP
I take exception to your editorial Wednesday chastising those of us who are registered voters but shut out from the upcoming primary. I would love to vote in this primary, but since I refuse to join a political party I don’t have the opportunity to cast my ballot. I realize I could vote for a Democrat but the people I support in this election happen to be Republicans. It’s not my fault, or the fault of other independent thinkers and voters in our county, that the Republican Party has shut us out.

THOMAS: In Laurie we trust
As a former holder of public office, I would say that the two most important things that one must never violate are the public’s trust and the public’s money. So when it comes to the County Treasurer’s race, the choice is crystal clear — Laurie Thomas.
PISCHNER: Will serve all residents
I hope the voters will come out strong and vote for Don Pischner for Kootenai County Clerk. I have known Don since Junior High days. He is fair, treats everyone with dignity and respect, and follows through on his commitments. He is well educated, and his business experience proves him to be a fair manager, and a diligent boss. A longtime resident of Kootenai County, he is well-known throughout the county, and is the right kind of person to manage the Clerk’s office, which includes six departments, with a staff of nearly 100, and a $70+ million dollar budget. He has the experience, qualifications, temperament, and willingness to serve ALL the residents of Kootenai County equally. I am voting for Don in the May 20 Republican Primary Election, and I hope all of you will, too!
WHALEN: A man of character
Why Pat Whalen over Bob Nonini?
NONINI: Service above and beyond
I have to admit that I don’t follow politics enough to really know the issues being debated, but I know from personal experience that Sen. Nonini supports families and business in our community and state — and his actions prove it.
GOEDDE: Earned educators' trust
We served with John Goedde during his term on the Board of Trustees for the Coeur d’Alene School District and know first hand John’s work ethic, dedication to high standards for all students and support for post-secondary/workforce readiness. We urge you to support his re-election as District 4 Senator.
SOUZA: Better for education
Sen. John Goedde proudly represents his 14 years (10 years as chairman) on the Education Committee as his “top priority.” The results of this effort is evidenced by the fact that our school system is the nation’s WORST. Certainly, this fact offers the thought that maybe it’s time to reconsider the job we are doing for our children! The kids can’t change it — we have to. We have an opportunity to elect Mary Souza (an unknown for sure), but to trade incompetence for a maybe seems like a pretty good deal at this point. Sen. Goedde’s connection to the governor and Lt. governor sound like the status quo that make for a system of politics sans any improvement.
WILKEY: Most qualified coroner
I am a retired ER nurse and have worked with and know both Deb Wilkey and Dr. Keene.
ELECTION: Vote for 'good guys'
We grow up watching the struggle and, by observation, learn that each side comes with its own set of expectations. The good guys have many boundaries that mean nothing to the bad guys. Not respecting boundaries is what makes them bad guys. Bad guys are expected to lie and cheat, and good guys to play it straight. Cheating is unacceptable to good guys, and we call that honor. Good guys are bound by honor to avoid cheating or taking unfair advantage. Of course, bad guys have no such obligation, and may even attempt to disguise themselves as good guys to gain advantage, much like an identity thief would do, and that is what we here in our lovely North Idaho are facing.
THOMAS: Steward of tax dollars
I have known Laurie Thomas for nearly 18 years. She has been the Chief Deputy Treasurer of Kootenai County for 13 of those years. Laurie is the most dedicated public servant I know. She works very hard for all of Kootenai County’s citizens. She has improved customer service while reducing the number of staff. She has stayed with or ahead of the curve as technology changes. She is in her office and interacts with the public. Laurie is a trustworthy steward of our tax dollars. I urge you to vote yes for Laurie Thomas in the May 20th primary election. She has the experience we need. Please choose proven experience over empty words.
THOMAS: For more excellence
I heartily recommend Laurie Thomas for Kootenai County Treasurer. I’ve known Laurie for many years and am very familiar with the outstanding job in that office by Tom Malzahn and his next in line, who now should be elected to continue the progress. I’m like another who wrote in endorsing Laurie, and who mentioned the dirt being slung by her opponent.
PISCHNER: Has great experience
Every so often the voter has the opportunity to place the right man in the right position. Don Pischner is a perfect fit for Kootenai County Clerk. As a former JFAC member in the legislature, with his audit and accounting experience, he was a leader in development and review of state department budgets. He is a proven fiscal conservative, and as a true native he knows and lives the history of Coeur d’Alene and Kootenai County. He is an experienced leader and true patriot.
SEINIGER: Judge for the people
Do you consider yourself to be an ordinary person? Like me, most people in north Idaho consider themselves to be ordinary persons. William “Breck” Seiniger’s opponent stated that Seiniger’s agenda is to represent the interests of “small and ordinary persons.” That statement convinced me to write this letter. The primary election is our only opportunity to elect a Supreme Court Justice. All of us need to take the time to vote in the primary. For all of us “ordinary persons,” I ask you to vote for William “Breck” Seiniger for Idaho Supreme Court Justice.
HORTON: Keep a good judge going
Our existing Supreme Court Justice Joel Horton is a native of Nampa, Idaho, and has given 28 years to public service here in the Gem State. He served as deputy Prosecuting Attorney in Ada and Twin Falls counties, Deputy Attorney General, and as an Ada County magistrate. Governor Phil Batt appointed Justice Horton as a district judge in 1996 where he served until 2007 when he was appointed by Governor “Butch” Otter to the Idaho Supreme Court. In making this appointment, Governor Otter said of Justice Horton: “His insightful legal scholarship, keen intelligence, integrity and independence make him a great asset to the court.”

THOMAS: She'll inspire trust
There has been a severe lack of public trust in our elected officials lately. And while a lot of that may be for good reason, it makes it even more notable when we get the chance to vote for someone who is professional, respectable, and trustworthy. That person is Laurie Thomas, candidate for County Treasurer. Laurie has proven herself as Chief Deputy Treasurer for 13 years, looking after our tax dollars with responsibility, and managing people and tasks with professionalism and expertise. She is not only fiscally conservative, but also has the character and integrity to be trusted with such an important job.
MALEK: Smart and conservative
In looking at the choices in the upcoming Republican primary race for Legislative District 4 (which encompasses most of the city of Coeur d’Alene), the choice couldn’t be more clear. Luke Malek has already done an excellent job serving the Fourth District. He has fought to bring jobs to our community, keep federal control out of our healthcare system, and protect constitutional rights. He’s not afraid to stand up to political power players in order to represent the people of his district. Luke grew up here, went to school here, knows our issues and people, and has planted his roots here.

WIEDENHOFF: A true public servant
Please join me in supporting Fritz Wiedenhoff for Idaho State Representative District 2, Position A. Fritz has a long and solid public service career. That, coupled with his desire to ensure that the entire state, especially the 2nd Legislative District, continues to enjoy economic growth, job creation and dedication to educational priorities, demonstrates that Fritz is the correct choice for our next Representative. All of his children currently attend various public schools in the area and there is no doubt as to his priority commitment to education.

THOMAS: Kind - and dedicated
Many times during election years we, as voters, are overwhelmed with statistics that are spewed by the various candidates. They would have us believe that everything they say is accurate and their opponent is in never-never land! However, most of us are aware that statistics can be misleading and sometimes just wrong.
PISCHNER: Your safe, smart choice
Recently appointed County Clerk, Jim Brannon, spent more than three years and cost the taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars by suing Kootenai County, the city of Coeur d’Alene, and Mike Kennedy personally, all the way to the Supreme Court of Idaho just because he lost a close election. He attacked the reputations of honorable people at the county and the city. He lost at every single turn in the courts, and the good folks he was targeting were totally vindicated, even while he continued appealing and appealing.
CHEATHAM: Has experience, integrity
Who knows a candidate better than their spouse? First, let me write about Don Cheatham’s character which I believe is of the utmost importance. He’s a truly nice, honest, conservative, spiritual and extremely intelligent man. Believe it or not, he entered this race to fairly represent the people of District 3B with a willingness to protect their choices, liberties, freedoms and preserve conservative values. Don doesn’t believe the country is headed in the right direction. I realize people are dissatisfied with government, but things can change for the better with one trustworthy candidate at a time.

HORTON: Ethical, unbiased judge
I am writing to encourage Kootenai County citizens to re-elect Idaho Supreme Court Justice Joel Horton. I have known Justice Horton for almost 30 years, starting at the University of Idaho Law School. He has demonstrated over his career an intelligence, independence and work ethic that has distinguished him in his career as a prosecuting attorney and as a judge.
ELECTION: Strong, effective leaders
One of the key elements of a strong democracy is public confidence. Confidence must be instilled in our fellow citizens whether in government, business, organizations or in our households. An effective leader incites confidence through manifestation of resilience, integrity, courage, innovation and commitment.
HOUSE: Vote for Sims, Schindelbeck
I read in the Press about the recent Legislative Forum, and one issue in particular caught my attention. As a military veteran myself, I found Luke Malek’s derogatory response to Representative Sims not only offensive, but it showcased his lack of knowledge on fiscal reality. HB420 would have simply made military retirement pay exempt from Idaho state income tax. If a retiring veteran brings home to Idaho his retirement check of $24,000 and we exempt that from our state income tax, the tax impact to the state is only about $700. If every time we invest $700 we secure $24,000 to be spent in our state, that is a very sound financial investment. Both the Navy Times and USAA constantly print articles on the “best place for veterans to retire in the US.” State income tax is a top item when weighing places and influencing retiring Vets, like me.
NONINI: He's a true Republican
Call the Republican Party platform survey, a loyalty oath or a litmus test if you will, but I believe that it provides a great starting point to vet candidates that aspire to the Party’s nomination as a candidate in the November general election. Candidates who responded to the survey gave voters a basis to decide how closely a candidate agrees with their own viewpoint. In the District 3 State Senator race, two candidates were given an opportunity to state their level of agreement with the Republican Party platform. However, only one of the candidates completed the survey. That candidate is Senator Bob Nonini. Whether one agrees or disagrees with Mr. Nonini and his level of agreement with the GOP platform, at least one can be assured where he stands. The candidate who did not complete the survey has done the voters a disservice. He has not indicated his level of agreement with the platform of the Party from whom he is seeking nomination. There is therefore no information on which to vet this candidate with respect to the platform. Senator Nonini has represented my views in the Idaho Senate very well. He has declared where he stands regarding the planks of the Republican Party platform. The Idaho Freedom Foundation has ranked him Number 6 (out of 35 Senators) on their 2014 Freedom Index.
WERNER: Friend endorses him
I have known Terry Werner for over 20 years, from his service to the city of Post Falls on the council through his leadership of the Public Works Division. He is a man of integrity and values, and he will provide effective leadership and management of state resources.
ELECTION: Vote for more freedom
The Idaho Freedom Foundation Index is a non-partisan analysis and rating of bills voted on by the Idaho Legislature. Each legislator is rated on each vote. Positive numbers indicate a pro-free market and freedom-oriented voting record. Negative numbers indicate a big-government, more regulation, and tax raising voting record. What legislators SAY they will do is not considered. The index shows how they voted.
GOEDDE: Focus is on constituents
I support John Goedde for re-election to the Idaho State Senate. Over the past 12 years as a community leader in Coeur d’Alene, I have worked closely with John on many Kootenai County issues.
NONINI: Proven to be effective
My husband and I had a disagreement with our insurance agent and were faced with a crisis. We filed a complaint with the Idaho Department of Insurance in Boise. Knowing that we were located in Coeur d’Alene, the agent at the Department of Insurance in Boise recommended calling Bob Nonini, he is an “amazing Senator for the people.” So I did call our Senator, Bob Nonini. His wife Cathyanne answered the phone. Bob Nonini talked to me for an hour and a half from his home about our health insurance issue.
NONINI: He lost this man's vote
My first, and fortunately, only time I heard Mr. Nonini speak was during a meeting with a group of teachers. He was promoting Mr. Luna’s ideas about crushing teachers’ associations. I was blown away by Nonini’s rudeness, arrogance, and obvious hatred for teachers rights to negotiate. For a elected servant to talk so harshly and with so much venom to the public was the first example of years of him disrespecting and attacking public education in Idaho.
MATHESON: Giving back to community
I have known Steve Matheson since he and his family moved to the area five years ago. I saw him jump directly into improving our community as both an Ironman and CHS Booster Club volunteer. It is great to see that he wants to continue giving back to the community in an area where he has significant and meaningful experience.
MORSE: Educated and successful
Ed is a successful small businessman and a long time county resident. He knows our county. Ed has great qualifications and education with a MBA and JD degrees. He is an advocate for property and water rights. Ed brought reform legislation to revoke special privileges for elected officials. Ed works to sponsor legislation for job creation and fostering existing industry. We need him in the legislature.
THOMAS: Top pick for treasurer
It’s been said that politics are not for the faint of heart. Reading the back and forth between some of the current candidates and having been involved in past elections, I can attest that putting your name on the ballot opens up oneself to a fair amount of scrutiny. But when that scrutiny goes beyond credentials and becomes personal, that’s when it crosses the line. In my six years as Commissioner, I can without hesitation tell you that the best run office in the county was that of the Treasurer. And the largest part of that was due to the daily oversight of Laurie Thomas. Her commitment to customer service and the taxpayers of Kootenai County is a priority. Across the state she is recognized by her peers for her knowledge of the Treasurer’s office duties. When I hear of the mudslinging and backstabbing that her opponent is using to smear her character, it tells me that he is not the type of person I want dealing with the citizens of Kootenai County. I urge you to join me in voting for Laurie Thomas for Kootenai County Treasurer.
GOP: Party isn't supporting Whalen
All of the Republican candidates running for Idaho State House and Senate positions were sent a copy of the party platform. They were asked to complete this disclosure form and return it to the State Party by a date certain. They could agree with all of the planks in the platform OR they could state why they disagreed with individual planks in the platform. In either case, the document was to be returned to the State Party office.
WHALEN: Fearless in civic service
Pat Whalen is the only choice for sound leadership in the Idaho Senate to serve District 3.
KEENE: Prepared to be coroner
Dr. Warren Keene has been an ER physician at our community hospital for the past 12 years and helped care for many of my patients. During that time, Dr. Keene has demonstrated the ability to make critical decisions effectively and efficiently in sometimes highly stressful situations. His background includes having been a family physician for almost two decades, an Associate Director of a Family Practice residency, and Assistant Dean at the Northwest Campus Medical School of North Dakota. These experiences have built a fund of knowledge involving medical training and dealing directly with issues of life and death that few others could bring to the job of coroner. In my personal experience, Dr. Keene has always brought the highest ethical standards to whatever endeavor he has pursued, as well as a sense of fiscal responsibility to those he served.
SMOKING: Veggies, fruit help kick habit
Panhandle Health District thanks Pilgrim’s Market for its generous donation of five fruit baskets to the women who quit smoking, or reduced smoking, as a result of PHD’s recent tobacco cessation course at the Union Gospel Mission.
CURRIE: A proven leader
I am writing this letter in support of Rick Currie for House Seat 4B in the Idaho legislature.
PLANTER: Thief ruins mom's day
To the thief or thieves that stole my white geranium in a terra cotta colored round planter right off my steps on Mother’s Day in the dark of night: I hope whomever it was for, be it your wife, mother, girl friend or for yourself, enjoys it.
Trendy alternatives to old favorites
Every year, I get a list of new and trendy foods to be on the lookout for at our local grocery stores and markets. There does seem to be a trend towards more healthier foods. There are more varieties of baked crackers and chips; several of these varieties are made with popped corn and are quite tasty. Greek yogurt has become a dairy staple and there are new exotic flavors coming out weekly, it seems. I love some of the new coffee blends.

Spring projects
I don't know what it is about spring but when it comes, everyone around here seems bound and determined that the hibernation of the winter is over and they are ready to get some work done. They are stacking slash piles, cleaning outside windows, putting in patios, cleaning out their garages and getting their gardens ready for planting, along with biking, running and hiking Canfield. Everyone is outside doing something, and I am sure that this week there are some backs, necks, shoulders and knees that are mighty sore.
The white stuff
Most nights at my home, we have a ritual with our kids. They first choose whether they are going to brush their own teeth, or if they are going to lie in our laps and have either my wife or I do it "like a dentist." Whatever they choose, though, they always run to me afterwards and flash a huge smile and ask, "Are my teeth shiny?" And only after I give the nod of approval do they run off to bed and promptly fall asleep. (All right - it's not always that easy, but that's not the point of this article).

Athletes recover faster with acupuncture
With Ironman just around the corner, triathletes are in their last-ditch efforts to increase their endurance and delay "the wall." During this time, and while tapering training, many have learned that acupuncture in a couple of specific points allows them to increase their endurance while delaying their muscle fatigue point. These treatments, combined with care for any health or physical issue that may be occurring, decrease recovery time and allow the triathlete to perform longer without fatigue. Recovery is a key at this point in training to prevent injury and increase aerobic capacity.

Wine descriptors
Whenever we hold a tasting or send out wine club, the wines are accompanied by tasting notes: descriptions of what to look for in the aromatics and palate flavors of the wine. Keeping those notes fresh, though, often leads to getting a bit flowery in our language, which seems to create more questions than we tried to answer by writing the notes. So here are some of the more common ones and how to interpret them.

Physical therapy and carpal tunnel
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a common condition of the wrist and hand that can affect the use of the whole arm. It is caused by pressure on the nerve at the base of the palm (median nerve). Because of the demands that people place on their hands and wrists, CTS is a common condition affecting one out of 20 Americans. Surgery for this condition is commonly performed on the wrist and hand. Fortunately for most people who develop CTS, physical therapy treatment can often relieve pain and numbness and restore normal use of the hand, wrist, and arm without the need for surgery.

Chiropractic for the golfer
More than 25 million people enjoy golfing. Many avid golfers contort their bodies into oddly twisted postures, generating a great deal of torque. Couple this motion with a bent-over stance, repeat 120 times over three or four hours, add the fatigue that comes with several miles of walking, and you've got a good workout - and a recipe for potential lower back trouble.

Some attribute this drop to lower than expected housing market results in many parts of the country.

Statement for May 5 board meeting
There has been some discussion and frankly disagreement recently about certain of my comments at the January and February board meetings. Specifically when I was asked in the January and February board meetings about whether or not there had been a request of the board to change the school districts non discrimination policies my answer was in my mind truthful. On hindsight I believe I should have answered the question differently. I should have made clear that there had been no request of the board as a governing body to change the non discrimination policies - but I should have added that I had been contacted and asked to review such policies. I should have also said that I had discussed this issue with the administration because I knew it would likely come before the board. After considerable delay that finally did happen at the March meeting.

Passion drives teaching
When an industry or profession experiences fundamental, perhaps foundational, change, it can impose a great strain on one's passion for it. We're experiencing that in the newspaper industry nationwide; not only do fewer people read newspapers, but fewer people read, period (no, Facebook and Twitter don't count). Yet no less is society's need for news. So our whole world is changing; it feels very different.

FRASURE: Experience makes him the choice
I am writing to show my support for Evan Frasure running for Secretary of State. The Secretary of State duties consist of being the official link for Idaho businesses, supervising elections, Idaho’s civics teacher and is a member of the Land Board. Evan is most qualified for this position due to his experiences.
EBERLEIN: For new leadership
One incumbent is running again for Kootenai County Commissioner in the May 20 primary election. Please unite, Republican voters, and vote for his opponent.
WERNER: Receives ex-mayor's support
Terry Werner is absolutely the best choice for Legislative District seat 3A, and has earned the right to ask for voter support to represent them in the Legislature.
MENDIVE: Just check the record
Ron Mendive’s voting record proves conservative leadership. According to the 2014 Freedom Index, Ron Mendive scored second in the state of Idaho legislature with a score of +154! Yes, that makes him the No. 2 Conservative in the whole state. According to www.IdahoFreedomindex.com, this was evaluated using the following criteria:
THOMAS: Honorable and trustworthy
I am writing in support of Laurie Thomas, Republican, for Kootenai County Treasurer. Laurie has honorably represented all of us as Deputy Treasurer for the past 13 years. She respects and enforces the checks and balances established for county government, she has an undeniable belief in limited government as a fiscal conservative, and safety of principal is her primary goal when considering investments with the taxpayer’s money.
MATHESON: Earns a Spirit Lake vote
I have read much about the two Republican candidates for the Kootenai County Treasurer position, and have decided Steve Matheson is the superior choice given his education and experience.

Fascinating oak perspective
We just completed a winemaker dinner and tasting with the iconic California winery, Ridge. They have been around since the mid-'60s and their director of winemaking, Paul Draper, has been with the winery since 1969 - a lengthy tenure, by any standard. Christina Donley, who joined us from the winery, shared some of the wonderful history of this consistently great producer with all who attended.
Going our own way
Many of us have fought against the Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare) since its inception. Idaho was one of the first states to file a lawsuit challenging the act's constitutionality, but when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against us, it forced a health insurance exchange on each state. In 2013 every state was faced with the decision to develop its own state-run health insurance exchange or abdicate that right to the federal government.
ELECTION: One goal for everybody
Idaho has the lowest minimum wage and our students score the lowest on standardized tests nationwide. What’s got me wondering is why people don’t recognize a change is in order? Seriously in order. How long are we going to lay back and trust our state to do the right thing for the people since they haven’t in 25 years? Our level of education for K-12 is deplorable, as is Idaho’s minimum wage. I’ve connected the dots between education and minimum wage jobs.

Using acupuncture can make it easier to lose and maintain weight loss.

Damaging effects of forward head posture
Long-term abnormal neck posture leads to muscle strain, disc herniations, arthritis, pinched nerves and instability. Poor health can result from stretching of the spinal cord. A major part of head, neck, jaw and shoulder pain including fibromyalgia, myofascial pain syndrome, temporomandibular joint dysfunction, and chronic fatigue syndromes is due to poor posture.
Living in the gradients
All too often, especially at the beginning of the year or after hearing a guest speaker somewhere, we get super-motivated to start eating healthy. We jump to the fad of the moment, put ourselves 100 percent into it, suffer, get off track, get WAY off track, and finally sabotage the whole thing. While I am certainly an advocate of going 100 percent into what path you choose to take, don't make it so hard that you can't stay on it. There are what are called "gradients."
LCDC: Helped get this business going
I am a new business owner in downtown Coeur d’Alene. “The Way Back” at 213 N. Fourth St. is a co-op shop selling vintage and antique items, as well as art and local handmade wares. I’m ever so grateful to Lake City Development Corporation, our landlord, for all they did in helping to get this fantastic art deco building ready for us to do business. I could not have hoped for a better, more helpful landlord.

Free yourself from the cycle of emotional investing
In many areas of your life, you're probably aware that it's useful to keep emotions out of your decision-making - and that's certainly the case with investing. However, it can be difficult to keep your feelings from influencing your investment decisions. But you may find it easier to invest with your head, rather than your heart, if you know a little something about two different cycles: the market cycle and your emotional cycle.

But when I saw on May 5 that the headline was a climate-change denying propaganda piece sourced from the Cybercast News Service, previously known as the Conservative News Service, I realized that Mr. Harris is not as much a scientist as just another right-wing shill who doesn’t know the difference between weather and climate.
MATHESON: No innuendo here
Steve Matheson was recently criticized in a letter to the editor for “making innuendo assertions lacking follow up substance.” I am not certain what she considers “follow up substance,” but had she done her homework, she would see Steve has provided overwhelming evidence to support his legitimate concerns involving the Treasurer’s office. The supporting evidence listed on Steve Matheson’s website, MathesonForTreasurer.com, is comprehensive if not exhaustive. In his Due Diligence section, Steve describes in detail his concerns while providing substantiating documentation. Given the Treasurer’s office (tax collector) had nearly $150,000,000 under control as of Dec. 31, 2013, I believe it’s important to decipher which candidate is making innuendo assertions with no substance. It certainly doesn’t appear to be Steve Matheson.

HEALTH: Help the region get healthier
As a Registered Dietitian with the Panhandle Health District, I recently attended the Creating Healthy Communities Summit. Panhandle Health District (PHD) was well represented, and we exchanged thoughts and ideas with people who work in city governments, health care, engineering, city planning, transportation and child care. National speakers inspired everyone to start on a plan to improve community health as well as set a long-term goal.

U.S.: Nation's image diminished
A Pew Research study of 2011, taken in seven Muslim nations, asked six questions relative to their thoughts regarding the moral character of the citizens of the United States. The following are averages of their combined views: 64 percent believed Americans to be selfish; 64 percent that we are greedy; 60 percent that we are immoral; 59 percent that we are violent; 59 percent that we are arrogant; 51 percent that we are fanatical. These figures make it very clear that al-Qaida should have no problem recruiting terrorists. All of these percentages have risen over the past two decades — why? We were once known world-wide as a caring, compassionate people. What changed? Perhaps we have become more amoral and our projected image has changed.

Remembering the Sunshine Mine disaster
Forty-two years ago today, Idaho lost 91 miners in one of the deadliest disasters in the history of American mining. Our annual remembrance of the lives lost comes on the heels of last week's Workers' Memorial Day, a day observed by the AFL-CIO to honor those who have died in their line of work and to raise awareness of the importance of workers' rights and job safety. This tragic loss of life should serve as both an opportunity to recognize the advances made in mining and other hazardous industries, and to look critically at how today's society still fails to achieve the full realization of human dignity and workers' rights.

Maximum effort on minimum wage drive
As RaiseIdaho's founder, I would like to officially thank all the volunteers and organizations who participated in our effort to bring raising the minimum wage to a higher level discussion for citizens throughout Idaho. We gained much strength over the strong effort of 11 months that we gathered registered voter signatures. So many people thanked us and gave us hugs. We gained national attention as a state for something good. A state who could be aware enough of the national problem of poverty and lack of living wage jobs.
