Don Horne, 78

| May 9, 2014 8:24 AM

Don Horne passed away peacefully in his sleep in the early morning hours of Friday, April 25, 2014.

Don was born September 18, 1935, to Lawrence "Bud" Horne and Edith Horne in Wallace, Idaho. The family lived in Kellogg, and Don graduated from Kellogg High School. He enjoyed fly fishing with his dad and brother on the Moyie River in Canada, and later on the rivers of Montana. In his youth, Don worked underground in the mines and smelter for Bunker Hill to put himself through college, and helped his parents run the American Legion Hall in Kellogg as a bowling pin setter and bartender. Don started his college career at the University of Idaho in Moscow, but after two years there he joined the Army to serve in the Korean War. He promised his Mom that he would return and finish his degree, and Don did just that, graduating from the University of Idaho with a degree in business and finance in 1960.

Upon graduation, Don was recruited by the Idaho Department of Highways to start work in their Coeur d'Alene office. He was asked to take the Chief Right of Way agent job in the Boise headquarters office, but turned it down to live and work in Coeur d'Alene. Don was promoted to Chief R/W agent in charge of District 5 (the five northern counties) after a few years, and went on to work for the Department for 22 years.

In 1976, Don married the "love of his life," Donna Goodwin. The adventure then began: Don and Donna built the Food Stop at the corner of Seltice Way and Ross Point Road in 1980. They also co-owned "Walden's Market" in Dalton Gardens near Canfield Middle School. Then Don, Gary Hoagland, and Malcolm McCain formed Acquisition Services, Inc., in 1982. They were a full service appraisal and acquisition firm that bought right-of-way for improvement and widening of existing roadways and streets, and/or constructing new roadways. Don would later work with Michael Richardson and Stan Moe. Between the two crews, they were all over Idaho, Washington, and Montana for 32 years. Don recently retired to enjoy his home in downtown Coeur d'Alene.

After selling their convenience stores, Don and Donna traveled extensively all over the United States. He enjoyed a cross country train tour across Canada, and then a motor trip down through the New England States. Most recently, Don enjoyed a national park road trip through Waterton Lakes National Park in Alberta, down through Glacier Park, the Grand Tetons, and back through the Sawtooth Wilderness in Idaho. They traveled many times to South America, Mexico, the numerous Caribbean Islands, and took cruises to Alaska/Denali Park and Hawaii.

Don was a past president of the Coeur d'Alene Shrine Club, a member of Calam Shriners of Lewiston, a member of Scottish Rite (Valley of Coeur d'Alene) and a 32nd Degree Mason, and member of Kootenai Lodge No. 24.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Bud and Edith Horne, and his brother, Lawrence Horne. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Donna; sons: Jeff Horne of Irvine, Calif., Grey Horne, of Coeur d'Alene, and daughters: Jeni Netzlof (Curtis), of Tigard, Ore., and Melissa Feusier (Chris), of Coeur d'Alene; the grandchildren he adored: Kurt and Luke Netzlof, of Tigard, Ore., and Aubrey and Gabe Feusier, of Coeur d'Alene. Don is also survived by his brother, Doug (Gretchen) Horne, of Moses Lake, Wash., niece, Teresa Horne, and nephew, Larry Horne.

Don left this earth on his own terms, loved by many, many friends and associates that he worked with over the years. At Don's request there will be no funeral services.

A note from the family: We will all sorely miss you Darling, "Chief," "Dad," and "Papa." You were an inspiration to us all with your kindness, caring, compassion, and support. We will always remember you, and until we are together again we will always have many, many wonderful memories to keep us comforted.
