St. Joe River marathon set for June 8

| May 31, 2014 9:00 PM

The Shadowy St. Joe River is once again the backdrop for the fourth annual St. Joe River marathon, half marathon and 5K race in St. Maries on June 8.

The race was initially designed as a fun, quirky way to encourage runners of all ages and abilities to enjoy the beauty of the area. Race medals and age-group awards are hand-forged and unique. But with the passing of the race co-founder, Dr. John Thomson in late 2012, organizers say the event has morphed into something more meaningful while still keeping its initial charm.

Committee members have filed for 501(c)(3) status and hope that with official recognition from the IRS, the organization can help local families struggling with the financial burdens of a cancer diagnosis. Dr. Thomson died from a rare form of cancer.

"Our hope is that an official charity status will help us to raise even more money and be able to help local families who might need assistance paying medical bills or living expenses that are accrued while undergoing cancer treatments," said committee member Devon Barta.

The race is known for its charm and the course for its beauty, as most of all three events are run along a dirt road on the banks of the St. Joe River.

"We provide a small-town atmosphere packaged alongside a scenic and challenging run," Barta said. "We have repeat volunteers, many of whom request a specific aid station or water stop each year, so our runners can expect the same friendly faces each year. It's a really special touch."

Registration is open through race weekend, but to be guaranteed a finisher T-shirt, participants must register by May 20. Registration can be done online at stjoerivermarathon.com. Any questions can be directed to Devon Barta at (208) 568-1412 or [email protected].
