For my ancestors, the Civil War was not about slavery. My ancestors did not own slaves. They were farmers born in South Carolina who fought to protect their land, their families and their livelihood. Much of our family history was destroyed when courthouses in the South were burned by the Union army.

One of the great reasons for practicing yoga is its ability to bring you into the moment with mindfulness. The first day of summer
Summer begins at 12:38 this afternoon and I'm ready to celebrate! My wife and I begin our day by changing our heavy, winter bedcover in exchange for a light, pastel quilt. We open all windows in our home, replacing the stale winter air with the morning summer breeze freshening as the sun begins to rise, and let the dogs out to run in the yard. This cool first morning of summer requires slippers and a robe over my pajamas to maintain my body-heat. I willingly accept the chilly morning air knowing warm mornings are on the way.

Power up with plant proteins
The benefits of plant-based diets for the prevention of heart disease and cancer are well known in the health community, but are often challenged for being low in protein. Humans do not synthesize nine of the twenty amino acids required as building blocks of protein, and therefore must obtain them from the diet. Vegetarians who include dairy and eggs can readily meet their protein needs, since animal products contain all essential amino acids (EAAs). Because vegan diets do not include animal products, special consideration must be taken in meal planning to ensure adequate protein intake.

Amsterdam, what a place. There are bikes everywhere. Rickety old bikes, cruisers, the Range Rover variety, and bikes with big carriers in the front to hold lots of children - or an occasional girlfriend as you take her out on a date. I have never seen so many bikes. There are more bikes than people to ride them in The Netherlands. I use to think their tulips were what fascinated me in Holland, but it seems that the Dutch people go everywhere by bike: to the market, to work, to shop, to the park and to visit friends for dinner; and this level of activity of exercise on a daily basis fascinates me.

El Nino should be with us through at least the fall
Weather Gems
Most of us have heard of this new El Nino, the warmer than normal sea-surface temperature event in the south-central Pacific Ocean. This phenomenon began in March and continues to strengthen as we head into the summer season. As of mid June, it appears we have a "moderate" event, but may become a very strong El Nino later this summer or fall.

ER: If you've got to go
I hope that none of you ever have to utilize any emergency room anywhere. However, I recently was taken to our ER at Kootenai Health in Coeur d’Alene and if you ever need an ER, that is the one you want! The doctors are professional and efficient (and sometimes comical) and the nurses are outstanding in every way. I could not have been in better hands anywhere. Thanks to all the overworked doctors and nurses at the Kootenai Health ER!
Are radon tests necessary?
When buying a home it is recommended that you hire a professional home inspector to determine latent defects within the home. If an inspector discovers serious problems you may ask the seller to correct the conditions, you may opt to proceed with the purchase in spite of them or you may decide to walk away from that home and resume your search.

CHAMBER: Not the right message
Just getting caught up with news. The Coeur d’Alene Chamber of Commerce is in financial trouble? Must be a joke. The business leaders of this town should set an example of fiscal responsibility. The example that I see is to get in over your heads in debt, then initiate a new membership drive to help to attain solvency. Then have a big party to add a lot more money toward the insolvency. It would be great if the member businesses could recover from bad moves the same way. Seems like the wrong message is being provided to attract new members.

Surprised by a boy
Decades before he was born, my son already had a name. I was in high school, dreaming about the future, as adolescents do, when I named him Christopher. When pronounced, the name, Christopher Kime, has an alliterative, rhythmic quality that seemed to fit the boy I was imagining. In the technical terms of poetry, the syllables of the first and last names together form a trochee (strong, weak) followed by an iamb (weak, strong). The name glides easily off the tongue. A perfect name for a perfect boy - one I hadn't even met.

The jury was absolutely right in their decision.

Climate change is just warming up
I was floored that the Coeur d'Alene Press gave such a big space in the paper to Mr. Gressler in his "My Turn" for his rebuke of all us experts. I hope I get the same for my reply on his attack piece. I won't go into the other people he ridiculed - they can defend themselves. You, Mr. Gressler, seem to be the top expert. You apparently know everything about anything. Yet, I notice that you never put up any evidence, proof, or facts to support your positions. You just smear the opposition and character assassinate. This is rule one out of the liberal democratic playbook. You called us a bunch of tea party Republicans and government conspiracy believers. To take a page out of your book, I would speculate that you are a liberal MSNBC watcher that believes in all the slanted propaganda they put out, as well as CNN and the mainstream media. They don't even report real news that they don't like. But enough of this, I am not going to do a smear piece like you. I will answer you point by point, something you never have done in either of your articles.

Poor, poor, poor, poor MaryJo Finney. She doesn’t get her way so she’s crying bully. She’s the bully, as far as I’m concerned. She and her group tried to take over the school board and that didn’t work out too well because, when it was explained what could and couldn’t be done lawfully, her candidate resigned “for health reasons.”

Doing the right thing is a good thing
On Monday evening Zachary Endreson, 11 and Michael Williams, 9, of Post Falls were playing outside when they found a wallet on the sidewalk. The wallet contained an Idaho ID card, Social Security card, credit cards and nearly $800 in cash. The boys ran home and gave it to Zachary's father. And here's where the story brings a smile ... he told the pair that the right thing to do was to call the police and turn it in so it could be returned to the man who lost it - and it was.

Skin care and the aging process
As we age, gravity takes its toll, spots begin to appear, we lose volume and our skin becomes more dull. A regular skin care regimen is pertinent to aging gracefully. The first and most important step in defense is sunscreen! UVA and UVB rays from the sun speed up the aging process and can lead to wrinkling, age spots, spider veins, and even melanoma. Sunscreen, especially a "physical" block, meaning one that contains titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, are the best for preventing harmful rays.

Zack is rambunctious, active and full of life. Kids tell the teacher Zack pushed during four-square, ran between their jump-rope game and stole their ball. Zack spends most recesses sitting on the bench frustrated and confused. When asked why he can't control himself and follow school rules, Zack shrugs and sadly answers, "I don't know."
MOUNTAIN: Let the voters decide
The article dated June 8 regarding Rathdrum Mountain states, “For years the city heard little vocal opposition to the development of the city property on Rathdrum Mountain.” That is not true! I attended two meetings held over several years at Lakeland High School and I can tell you that the crowd was very vocal against the project both times. In addition to those meetings the city had contacts at other public events to get a feeling for this idea and the results were not positive. I have gone to three neighborhoods and talked to people about the idea, and the results of the footwork was 10 to 1 against.

A passionate advocate
This past week we had the pleasure of spending some time with Dan Karlsen, head winemaker - or as he likes to call himself, "wine producer" - for Talbott Vineyards, located near Monterey California. Dan refers to himself as the "producer," as he more firmly believes that the winemaker is the Talbott vineyards. He sees himself as just the guiding force for the fermentation, ageing and bottling of the wines once the vines themselves make the wine.

Learn from history and follow true leaders
In the 1930s, the government of Great Britain watched as Hitler and Nazi Germany built a huge military machine and started invading smaller peace-loving countries. This came to an abrupt end in the late 1930s after Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain met in Munich with Hitler to sign an agreement. When he returned to England he declared that "he knew how to handle Hitler." In the next day or so the Nazis invaded Poland! The lion, Winston Churchill, who had been warning for years of the danger that Hitler posed, became the replacement for Mr. Chamberlain. More than any person, he is responsible for rallying his and the other freedom loving countries against all odds, preserving freedom. He was despised by the Labor Party, who dispatched him after the war was over.

FLAGS: Thanks once again
I’d like to say thank you to whoever puts the flags up along the streets of Fairway Lane and Hillcrest. I drive through that area to go to the Kroc Center. I love seeing the flags when they are lined up all along the street. Since it was Flag Day Sunday, I had the feeling they’d be up, and sure enough when I turned the corner there they were. It’s a beautiful sight.
MOUNTAIN: Yes on public use
The GEM committee is excited and supports the opening up of the mountain property for public use. The city of Rathdrum has acreage close to the city that could be used for hiking, picnicking and other low density uses. What a wonderful asset the city has that could be created and used by the people in the area. The city is gathering information to make an informed decision and try to address the concerns of all the people in the area, not just a select few homeowners.

Competition is fierce, play fair
As the graphic shows the Kootenai County real estate market is strong. This illustrates a level of activity that leads to fierce competition among buyers, sellers and agents. Wave that flag with pride
Flag Day is celebrated in the United States on June 14 every year. At the seasonal Middlebrook (New Jersey) encampment of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, on June 14 our new flag was hoisted in 1777, which became the tradition of flag day. By resolution passed on that date in 1777, the Second Continental Congress commemorated the adoption of the flag of the United States. President Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924), our 28th President in case you missed it in history class, issued a proclamation in 1916 that officially established June 14 as Flag Day. Though not an official holiday, National Flag Day was established by Act of Congress in 1949.

CRIME: No reason for some bonds
I read in The Press on Tuesday that two suspects have been arrested in the BB gun rampage occurring in Post Falls. The crimes have been classified as a felony, and rightly so as severe property damage occurred. My question is why, in almost every criminal act, most of them felonies, a bond is offered instead of deserved jail time?

Would raising the minimum wage in Coeur d’Alene help or hurt workers? The easy answer is that it puts more money in the pockets of workers at low-wage jobs, so it would help them. Your gallbladder matters
So often we are duped into believing that the gallbladder, appendix, uterus, tonsils and other organs don't matter; that we can live "just as well" without them. Is that really true? I personally don't believe that God made a mistake and gave us worthless organs. Every organ matters, and every organ is made to function until the end of our lives if we take care of them. But we don't, and far too frequently, these "unneeded" organs get surgically removed and life is supposed to go on like nothing happened.

Geddie Fredy takes hyperbole to a new level in his June 5 letter about President Obama. Facts support that Mr. Obama saved the economy, not destroyed it. I would like to know what facts Fredy is referring to when he claims that the president has told “never ending” lies. Further, I need to see examples of his inability to perform and trashing the Constitution. Lastly, the contention that the president has not been opposed nor will be is ludicrous. It is clear to anyone observing reality in an open and honest way that he has been opposed every step of the way. That is something I am sad about. The first sign of dishonesty is a diatribe that contains absolutely no facts.

CRASH: Too many red-light runners
I was at the intersection shortly after that terrible wreck at Honeysuckle and Highway 95 on Sunday. The pile of twisted metal I saw, which didn’t even resemble a car, convinced me that no one could have survived. A 37-year-old man, Jeffrey Kirk, did not. Apparently, some IDIOT (whose name I shall not mention) ran a red light at the intersection of Honeysuckle Avenue and Highway 95, and took this young man’s life. I shudder to think how fast he was going to mangle a vehicle so badly; he probably accelerated his huge SUV to get through the light. (Of course, he escaped injury!)

Inventory slows sales
Even though by all accounts the market area served by the Coeur d'Alene Multiple Listing Service is brisk, the total number of sales may be affected by shortages of suitable housing. At our last market report sales of homes in Kootenai County were 21 percent ahead of last year. At the end of May that decreased to what most would agree is a still healthy 18 percent increase in the number of sales. For the entire MLS the change was from 18 percent in April to a 16 percent increase in year over year comparisons.
OBAMA: Radicals love to hate him

Marriage today
Rich-poor gap, later vows, gays gain access
Through two decades of debate on whether America's gays and lesbians should have the right to marry, opponents of such unions depicted their resistance as "defense of marriage." Now, on the cusp of a Supreme Court ruling that could legalize same-sex marriage nationwide, the underlying institution is under scrutiny anew.

Let me get this straight, The Press found out that Tondee got fired from a little bird. I bet that little bird is Stewart, whose timing is interesting. I guess he wants people to forget that he took campaign money from the Swartouts as a quid pro quo for the Silverwood development he has the power to move forward (see his sunshine reports. He took money from Benjamin Swartout, Dennis Swartout and Mila Swartout Wasicek). I guess something must have happened at the May 21 meeting to make him want to divert attention away from the smell of his collusion.

Fitness myths busted
About once a year, I hit on one of my favorite topics: Fitness myths. A Bible lesson for those who need it
To Sholeh Patrick, Joan Harman, and others who demonstrate an interest in Spiritual matters and who have evidently given some serious thought to the subject, but who obviously do not understand the biblical doctrines of human depravity, regeneration, God's Sovereign Grace, or the doctrine of the church, among other things. These doctrines are absolutely imperative to accurately interpret some important portions of Scripture. I will list some of these key concepts as near in logical order as I can:
Climate: A gentleman's bet offered
In response to Daniel Gressler's letter published June 3, I agree that we are in a dangerous period of climate change but I do not agree that it is caused primarily by puny humans. It is possible for us to cause pollution and harm to localized areas of our environment but nothing like the catastrophic changes which are coming. We can hardly warm or cool the seas. The question we must ask ourselves is "What is the truth?" In the last few years as more research and interest into the truth has come forward, we now know that much of the "Global Warming" proclamations were faulty at best and often were totally contrived in order to meet an ordained conclusion. That is not scientific work that I am willing to trust.

Rathdrum Mountain has been here a lot longer than those who now talk of changing it to their own ends. Leave well enough alone. Cost of future maintenance, security and the open invitation for those who would visit our community and leave their trip behind for others to clean up. Cut the dead timber as required to control fire hazards. My vote is no, leave the mountain alone for the natural creatures that call it home — deer, moose, black bear and lot of other smaller lives. Can bioidentical hormone therapy help your arthritis?
As we age, those overused and abused joints seem to scream louder and louder, resulting in an ever-increasing use of ibuprofen. Degenerative osteoarthritis is a progressive joint destruction from years of wear and tear. Recent medical research shows that menopausal estrogen deficiency is causative in developing degeneration of the joints. Inflammation in the body causes degenerative diseases which in turn trigger more inflammation.

RATHDRUM: Keep mountain pristine
Have not seen the proposed survey about Rathdrum Mountain, however, This is a no brainer. This area is filled with recreational opportunities. To develop the mountain would create security problems and invite unwanted from outside in to our little area. Already we are having some problems with homeless on our streets. Fine, cut the timber every few years to reduce fire hazards but taxes and service fees are already high enough with adding on more to maintain what does not need to be maintained. It would disrupt the wildlife habitat and create a dumping ground for campers who do not look at Rathdrum Mountain like we do. The vote is NO NO NO to this project.

With ISIS threat looming, we must stand against evil
It is always refreshing and uplifting to watch the National Memorial Day program on television each year. Patriotism and the spirit of God are at their best. It does, however, point to America's need to conduct a reality check on modern warfare. We are facing entirely different aggressors than we confronted during World War I and II. During those wars, the rules of warfare, outlined during the Geneva Convention of 1864, served as a guide for treatment of prisoners. Today we are facing a faction of radical Islam that wants to impose its belief and laws on middle eastern countries as well as western democracies. There is an urgent need for the President and Congress to set aside political differences and outline a bipartisan plan for addressing the following questions:

Although our practice sees a majority of women for cosmetic surgery, these body enhancing procedures are not exclusively just for the female gender. More and more people are opting for alternative forms of medicine. Also known as complementary medicine (used in conjunction with conventional medicine), holistic medicine (meaning the whole person as opposed to isolating systems or symptoms), holistic medicine (meaning natural, non-chemical remedies), or traditional medicine (dates back to the majority of time until the industrialized revolution/chemicalized medicine), alternative medicine (umbrella term for all of the above), is more widespread than at any time since the beginning of the last century.

The summer reds of 2015
Food off the grill, summer picnics on the beach or your own backyard deck, and late suppers outside, summer is here and our diets move to lighter foods. Along the same lines, as the days lengthen and the temperatures warm, we see our tastes in wine change, too. Barbecue and dining outside just naturally lead us to drinking wines with a bit lighter body to go along with the temperatures. Here is a rundown of some of the new summer reds and some of our old favorites.
LETTER: Complaint misses target
In response to “The Liningers’” letter to The Press. May I ask, where do you get the time to sit on your porch and videotape to see if law enforcement is present day and night? May I suggest you keep your children out of the street? You obviously have plenty of time to watch them! Law enforcement does not get paid enough to do the job they do, and like any profession there are good and bad, however it seems you only see the bad. Do you think they get paid too much and don’t do their job? I think Officer Moore, his family, and the community would disagree.

TRAFFIC: Timing of lights is terrible
We moved to Coeur d’Alene a year and a half ago and love everything about this town and the area except for one thing — the traffic lights. I spent 22 years doing road construction in northern Chicago and the suburbs. The traffic lights here in Coeur d’Alene and Washington state are the worst timed and most inefficient traffic system I have seen anywhere. The sensor loops under the pavement remind me of generation one systems that I saw in the ’80s. I understand why I see so many cars running late yellow and red lights though there is no justifying it. They do it because they don’t want to sit through another long light cycle.
