CHAMBER: Time to cut the fat

| June 14, 2015 9:00 PM

Four generations of my family have resided in Coeur d’Alene. I have spent countless hours volunteering for the Chamber Commodores. The pirate ship parade float was built in our shop. As self-employed business owners we did gain friends and clients while a member of the chamber. We are no longer members, after ascertaining that the benefits for small businesses are few; “networking, advertising …” for exorbitant fees.

I find it shameful that our community “leaders” would ask this community for a handout. Many of us suffered economic losses. We had to let the building the parade float was built in go, at a huge loss. We didn’t ask for a handout.

I have a few suggestions: As grandma Applegate would say, “it’s time to cut the fat.” The bloated salaries, benefits, full-time employees must go. Staff our chamber with seniors, vets and volunteers. Move out of the “iconic” building, sell it, pay your debts.

I would have gladly given had it been to our shelters: The men’s, women’s, transitional housing and pets are all in outdated, deplorable condition. If Wilson or Metzger really cared about the “health and growth” of Coeur d’Alene, they would be taking care of our most important needs first. Their iconic building, and their continued salaries are not important. You notice I say “their” building. No one asked us, the community, if we wanted the chamber to build it. Why should we pay now? I will give where it’s important.
