Extremely weary of extremism
It is a given that very few extremists realize they in fact are out of the mainstream. As a moderate Republican who actually has a few friends that are Democrats, I have observed many in the past months who fit the term "extreme" on both ends of the political spectrum. I'm probably a little to the right of center, since I observe more wackos on the far left than the right. But then maybe they, like the lonely jackass in the field, bray louder than those in the majority. Having said that, I am deeply offended by those in my own party who bring shame and disbelief to the average voter.

Losing weight is serious business
Most people who set out to lose weight approach it as a one-time, heavy-hit endeavor. Do this diet or that one with gusto, then go back to life as normal, or a modified "livable" diet for a while afterward. But what would happen if we approached it like we did a new business, or even an important meeting? Except for rare occasions, one would not think of doing either without a goal or a plan.
Sciatica and you
Sciatica occurs when one experiences constant pain in the sciatic nerve, which extends through the entire lower part of the body, from the lower back to the buttocks and on down through the lower legs. The sciatic nerve keeps the muscles of the lower legs functioning correctly, causing sensation in the lower extremities.
Do you suffer from overuse injuries?
Overuse injuries are distinct from such commonplace trauma injuries as sprains, strains, broken bones and concussions. They are specific to the parts of the body most used during the athletic endeavor. These body areas can include the knees of athletes in sports that require running and jumping, such as basketball and soccer. The elbow is a susceptible area for throwers, such as the baseball condition known as "little league elbow."

In your “On The Air” section you print TV sports shows like today, 3:30 a.m., Tennis, Australian Open, men’s semifinals on ESPN. Well, I am not sure if anybody gets up at 3:30 a.m. to check that. Would it make more sense to print that in the day before paper? People could set DVR’s the day before it happens. The same thing happens on the weekends with soccer coverage too. I know you could search online for that, but if I do that I might even save my subscription to the paper. This would make sense!

I have a difficult time understanding the thinking of people in the states of Washington and Colorado. FAITH: No substitute for modern medicine
I was raised by a mother who was a Christian Scientist. Immunizations were given in the public schools, however I had a religious exemption. In a class of 30 students, I was the only one who was not inoculated. When I was ill, my mother stated I was not, and no help was given. I cannot adequately describe the suffering, mental and physical, this caused. I continually told my mother that I could not see the blackboard at school. She said nonsense, that was error speaking. I was seriously nearsighted and finally able to obtain glasses at age 16 when the school intervened. As an adult, I was able to escape this “abuse” and promptly had all the immunizations I had been denied as a child.

TAX: Time for fair tax policy
The Fair Tax, HR25, completely replaces our present income tax and gives citizens immediate control of their taxes. It is a tax on consumption, which means you pay taxes only when you choose to consume something new or use a service. And the first $11,500 per person per year (the currently defined poverty level) is not taxed. Therefore, no one pays taxes on necessities, a big break for low income families. A couple spending $50,000 a year on new goods and services would be taxed on only $27,000, a tax bill of only $6,210, which is 12.4 percent of their expenditures based on the proposed 23 percent consumption tax. The proposed law has been thoroughly researched and written by several highly trained economists who believe that the currently proposed rate will be revenue neutral with the taxes that are eliminated and will accomplish all of the benefits that are anticipated. Taxes that are eliminated include: Income tax, payroll tax (Social Security and Medicare withholdings), gift tax, estate tax, corporation tax, and taxes on interest, dividends, and capital gains. The bill will soon be discussed by Congress. Please let your voice be heard if you want to eliminate income taxes and the IRS.

Knee pain can be caused by disease or by injury. Knee pain can restrict movement, affect muscle control in the sore leg, and reduce the strength and endurance of the muscles that support the knee. The most common disease affecting the knee is osteoarthritis, which is caused by the cartilage in the knee gradually wearing away, resulting in pain and swelling.

It is the power of the sense of smell for bringing back memories, though, that strikes us as so amazing.

Not only do we shrink as we get older, but our height varies throughout the day. Be careful when selling with Craigslist
Not so long ago, success in using Craigslist to sell real estate was limited. Today the free classified site is considered a required strategy by most sellers, especially those wanting to sell their own property. Recently, we heard of a mourning widow who, finding no use for some of her late husband's possessions offered them for free on Craigslist. Several unsavory fellows showed up for the free stuff, using the opportunity to assess the home, returning later to take expensive tools and other items she had no intention of liquidating.

MOVIE: Focus misses mark
I am sickened and shocked by the “Act of Killing” article on the front page of the entertainment section Friday, Jan. 17. Tyler Wilson does his best to find some redeeming quality to this film but falls far short. The fact that this film exists, and is being considered for an Oscar, says volumes about what some moviegoers are willing to not only tolerate, but embrace. I think a better use of film would be to interview the families of the victims rather than to glorify and relive the horrific acts of torture.

I was very saddened, but not surprised, to see the outcome of the investigation into Eric Johnston’s death. Watching Officer Mortensen’s video, I saw no attempt to talk to Eric, only threatening him with a gun. I know that Eric was probably still somewhat drunk and very, very scared. Officer Mortensen certainly helped him out, if he did have a death wish.

U.S.: Foundation of our founding
Recent letters once again downplay the role of religion in the founding of the United States of America. While it is true that our Founders did not want a repeat of a state religion such as the Church of England, they did found this country upon Judeo-Christian principles, which includes belief in a monotheistic deity. America does not preclude anyone’s beliefs, but we don’t get to exercise some manifestations of some religions such as cutting people’s heads off because that violates the values upon which this nation was founded (not to mention the poor beggar getting whacked). Those three core values are found on our coins: Liberty, In God We Trust, and E Pluribus Unum (out of many, one).
CORE: Concerns are legitimate
If Senator Goedde has not had “specific concerns” about the common core he hasn’t been reading his hometown paper. The “My Turn” article in the Cd’A Press on Dec. 19 is just one of many in The Press in the last few months. Sen. Goedde must be representing his own interests rather than the interests of his constituents. (He must be one of those RINO’s mentioned in this article.)
OBAMA: Worst president - ever
I was born during the second term of FDR and thus have lived through the administrations of 13 presidents. I believe our current “president” is by far the worst, most dangerous in the history of America. Obama’s legacy will be socialism, insolvency, and the financial destruction of our country. No thinking person could deny that Obama is a marxist, and is doing everything in his power to destroy our economy with the most massive debt and deficits ever seen in history. He is also systematically intending to surrender America’s sovereignty to the “New World Order” through numerous “trade agreements” which will place America under the U.N. His plan is to utterly destroy our free enterprise system and institute socialism as our new economic system. This very year, we could see the collapse of the word’s financial system which would make the recent “recession” seem like child’s play.
POLICE: Tell the whole truth
Is our police chief that “pissed off” as to quit his job as chief of police in Spirit Lake, Idaho? Why do I see a county patrol blazer parked in front of his new home in Spirit Lake now every day? All that our (Spirit Lake) city government will say is that there was a difference of opinion. Nothing else.

COUNTY: Explaining the planning process
This is a response to John Kearns’ letter to the editor in Friday’s Coeur d’Alene Press. In the relatively recent past, dental implants have completely changed the way that dentists think about replacing teeth. Metabolic Syndrome: Chronic disease of today's lifestyle
Metabolic syndrome is a combination of issues that occur together and increase your risk of heart disease, cancer and early death. It is characterized as having high blood pressure, elevated glucose levels, elevated cholesterol levels (high triglycerides, low HDL, high LDL) and a waist circumference of at least 40 inches in men and 35 inches in women. Men, this is around the waistline, not under the belly, as we know many of us say we still fit into 34-inch waist pants. Many people, men and women, fit into this category, or are well on their way to having this condition.

Let's get started
Expectations are just a part of life. The new year started and already this week, I have heard people saying they dropped the ball on their expectations for their health. They forgot their tennis shoes to walk at lunch with their co-worker, they ate too many foods that were rich in carbohydrates and they were feeling sluggish and tired, and they couldn't figure out how to make time for their health with their family and work obligations, now that school is in full swing. As a result, they were disgusted and wondered if they should just abandon this whole idea.

So when I have patients come into my office complaining of such symptoms and see that they eat or drink products with artificial sweeteners in them, I have to wonder what really is causing the particular symptom. Is it more spinal- or disc-related, or is more chemical-related?

Leavenworth: Go for the wine and the wine lists
One of the drawbacks of owning a retail wine shop is that it makes it tough to get away and explore wine country, even the nearby ones. Not that we don't get to try new wines - we do, virtually every week. The experience of getting out to wine country and trying wine in tasting rooms and at wineries, though, is different. For us, it is more relaxed, less business-like, and we get the added bonus of speaking to wine professionals in their element, and learn about what they do and what trends are driving our industry at the producer level.

There is much talk these days about obesity and lack of health among the younger generation in our country. Abolition of reason, part II
Isaac Watts (1674-1748) is well known for his hymnody, his best known hymn being "Joy to the world;" however, most people are unaware that he was also a brilliant educator and logician. In his classic textbook, written for primary students, titled "Logic Or The Use of Reason In The Inquiry After Truth," Watts demonstrated that only through the application of logic and reason could a proposition be properly analyzed for truthfulness. In our modern culture, we find these methods of ascertaining truth have been abandoned for political correctness, subjective thinking and responding emotionally rather than objectivity reaching a logical conclusion based on the evidence. The following are two classic examples of this Abolition of Reason.

Chiropractic is health care, not disease care
Chiropractors have, since 1895, treated sickness and infirmity without the use of drugs and with the goal of avoiding surgical removal or repair of any of the body's organs or structures. Chiropractic's message is that the proactive care of one's body and wise lifestyle choices are necessary to achieve health. Chiropractors have held and maintained this view even before it became fashionable, and long before evidence made it clear that the drug and surgery model of "health care" is really nothing more than "disease care," waiting for disease to occur and then treating the effects. Chiropractic takes a preventive approach to health care.

The good in Idaho liquor law
As the New Year starts and the State Legislature starts to gather and plan its session for the coming year, the subject of liquor law and the potential for deregulation always seems to come up. As we have in past articles, we continue to urge caution as the debacle in neighboring Washington state shows it is a far more complex and nuanced subject than many acknowledge. For now, the groups that supported the law so heavily in Washington seem to have their attention focused on Oregon for the coming election cycle - not surprising, given Oregon's larger population versus Idaho's.

CHEERS: Visitors laud community
We were in Coeur d’Alene visiting our daughter over the Christmas holiday. On Monday, Dec. 23, we ended up visiting a number of different grocery stores in search of specific ingredients for some special dishes we were preparing for Christmas Eve. We were so impressed by how pleasant everyone we encountered was — from the grocery store clerks to the other patrons in the stores. I’m sure everyone else was just as busy and pressed for time as we were, yet everyone was kind and considerate. What a nice community you all live in!

There will likely be a great deal of discussion about the Idaho Core Standards during the upcoming legislative session. Much of that information has come from individuals who are only repeating what they believe they have heard. Healthy choices for the new year
As the holidays come to a close, we begin contemplating the New Year and the improvements we would like to make in our lives. Invariably, it comes to being healthier, eating better, losing weight. On that vein, can I make a few suggestions?

PACKAGES: Lateness the least of problems
I haven’t seen a letter yet addressing the late Christmas deliveries, so I’ll submit one.
TACOS: No such thing as too many
I was quite dismayed to read Richard Ochoa’s Dec. 29 letter complaining about the prevalence of taco stands in our city. First, there is no such thing as too many tacos. Second, isn’t it one of the founding American principles to embrace and adopt the diversity the world has to offer? To let all those meats, cheeses, and seasonings simmer together in the great melting pot? If you ask me, we should consider re-writing Emma Lazarus’s “The New Colossus” to incorporate this nation’s love for tacos, as follows:

TACOS: If you don't like them, don't go
We have the whole country going to heck with unemployment, Obamacare (not the website, but the law), the IRS which is overseeing the law, the NSA which is collecting data on each and every one of us through our phone and internet, and a curriculum called Common Core that is, or will be, taught in our local schools real soon. Mr. Ochoa, if you have kids or grandkids, I would be more worried about what I listed above than a few taco stands popping up here and there. If you don’t want them, don’t patronize them. They will leave.

Clean up your body for 2014

Do you feel like you are moody or in a mental fog? Do you have insomnia? These are all signs that you would probably benefit from a good house-cleaning for your body.

It's all in the bag ... cooking salmon en papillote

Dealing with dehydration
Dehydration occurs when your body does not have enough fluids to perform its normal functions. Your body loses more water and other fluids than it takes in, leading to a potentially serious medical condition. Excessive sweating, the use of diuretics, excessive alcohol use, serious diarrhea, fever, and vomiting can cause dehydration. Failure to drink fluids during exercise or in hot weather also can cause dehydration.

NORTH IDAHO: We live in a great area
I have thought many times, as I am born and raised in North Idaho, to put pen to paper and thank folks who have molded and developed this area for so many, for so many years. Call them unsung heroes who have labored, worked and given of themselves to make our Coeur d’Alene what it is today.
Navigating Italy II: The Regulations
Old-world producers France and Italy remain the two largest wine producing countries in the world. The practice of fermenting grapes into wine goes back to the days when the Romans and Greeks controlled much of Europe and likely fought over most everything, including wine! When a population has been working on a product for millennia they are rightly proud, and take the standards of production quite seriously. So it is in Italy, where the regulations over production and designations of wine are governed at many levels. The EU, country of Italy, and many local governing bodies within the appellations all hold some degree of sway over what wines and wineries receive the top designations.

Implant facts and tooth replacement options
There are many options for replacing single teeth, multiple teeth, or all of the teeth in an arch. Here is a quick guide to some of your replacement options. As you can see below, dental implants generally have the most going for them, but the other options definitely have their place as well.
Make a New Year's resolution for back health
A recent review of studies found that 85 percent of adults experience low back pain, and about 20 percent call their pain severe or disabling. Chances are if you don't have back pain right now, you are likely to experience it at some time during your life.
Dashing, plunging, ducks to start 2014
Some folks choose to start the new year by participating in a 5K such as TESH's Hangover Handicap or by pretending the water temperature of Lake Coeur d'Alene isn't 38 degrees when they take the Polar Bear Plunge. I admire them all but I choose to be bundled up on the Sanders Beach shore in front of Robert Cliff's bonfire today. :)

Other challenges can't be easily anticipated, but you can still plan for them - and you should.
The new year
I shiver in bed this morning realizing my home is colder than expected. Searching for heat, I throw back my covers, put on my robe and slippers and search for warmth. I look at the thermostat which reads 59 degrees and begin to explore why the controller refuses to turn on the heat. Foggy from a night of restless sleep, I start pressing buttons with no success.
