State labor department supports Core Standards

| January 25, 2014 8:00 PM

The Idaho Department of Labor has joined a statewide coalition of parents, teachers, school administrators, business leaders and child advocates who support implementation of the Idaho Core Standards in education.

Labor becomes the 30th member of Idahoans for Excellence in Education, which was formed last summer to promote the core standards approved by the State Board of Education in fall 2010 and the Legislature in 2011.

"Idaho employers are looking for employees with the ability to focus on critical thinking, problem solving and strong writing and math skills," said Ken Edmunds, who served on the State Board of Education before becoming director of the Labor Department. "The Idaho Core Standards will help them learn those skills."

Idahoans for Excellence in Education is collaborating with the state Department of Education on a public information campaign to explain the Idaho Core Standards to parents and others.
