Man sentenced for parking lot attack
BOISE (AP) - A Boise man has been sentenced to at least 15 years in prison in the assault of a woman at a mall parking lot in May and hitting another woman with his pickup truck after she tried to intervene.
Fourth District Judge Patrick Owen sentenced Greggory Macho on Tuesday to 30 years in prison. He will be eligible to seek parole after serving 15 years. Macho, 31, didn't comment.
Angela Smoot testified that she suffered two broken legs, nerve damage and head injuries when Macho's pickup truck drove over her as he fled the parking lot on May 14.
"Mr. Macho has no idea how much anguish, difficulty and heartache he has caused," Smoot told the court. "I wake up every morning to the damage he did, both physically and mentally.
"He broke my femur in half, fractured my (other leg) and confined me to a wheelchair," said Smoot, who can now walk with difficulty and continues physical therapy. "I believe his intent was to kill me."
The other victim, a 22-year-old woman, did not testify. She told investigators Macho pushed her into her car and kissed and groped her. Smoot intervened when she heard the woman's screams.
Macho earlier entered an Alford plea to aggravated assault, aggravated battery and destruction of evidence. Under an Alford plea, a defendant does not admit guilt but acknowledges prosecutors have enough evidence to gain a conviction. Macho has said he was under the influence of alcohol and drugs and does not remember the attack.
