FOOD: Fresher is always better

| January 5, 2014 8:00 PM

In reference to a letter by Mike Siefer on Wednesday, Jan. 1:

I have for many years in the recent past volunteered my time at a local food bank. To enlighten Mr. Siefer and others interested, most of the cans of food thrown out because of age are already old when donated. To keep the food given away safe, damaged or too old dates are discarded. Without public donations, food banks would not be able to help all those in need. Government supplies from the Department of Agriculture are not enough. So please don’t discourage those who would help by your uninformed remarks. If anything, please don’t wait to donate until the food is so out of date that you would not eat it yourself.

Thanks to all who generously help keep our very needed food banks going!
