Haunted houses
Disclosure laws in real estate require disclosure of “adverse material facts” about a property. Among those facts might be radon gas measured in excess of government tolerances, leaks, mold or any condition that, “would significantly affect the desirability or value of the property to a reasonable person” as defined by the Idaho Legislature. The items described then can definitely diminish a properties value, but at this time of year, with Halloween on Tuesday, we want to address the issue of haunted houses and whether a haunting is considered an adverse material fact.

NFL: Let's kneel together
The National Football League (NFL) and the president have created an impasse that will further divide the nation. All parties involved would achieve more if they bent their knee to God, rather than the gridiron. My respect for some in the black community diminished when a few overpaid NFL players chose to kneel during the playing of the National Anthem. Buy or rent?
Realtors will be quick to reply that you should buy, but let’s face it, we’re biased. If you want an objective opinion do some research online. The Department of Housing and Urban Development is a great resource for those of you who want to educate yourselves on how the advantages of Buying vs. Renting a home apply to your situation. In addition to the step-by-step process outlined on their website: http://www.hud.gov/buying/index.cfm there is a handy little calculator on realtor.com that will help you decide whether or not it makes sense to buy a home: https://www.realtor.com/mortgage/tools/rent-or-buy-calculator/ Click on advanced options. There you can enter in your current rent, let’s say $750 per month. Enter in the purchase price of a home, for this example we will use $200,000. Enter the percent down from your lender, but don’t forget about Idaho Housing, FHA, Rural Development and USDA loans that offer lower down payment loans. Then put in the number of years you plan to stay in your home. The default for this field is 30 years, but you can put in whatever you like. The yearly property tax rate is defaulted at 1 percent, so you may want to check with the Assessor or your Realtor to get a rate for the home you are considering buying. The calculator also projects a modest appreciation of 2 percent per year for the time you are in your home.

Carrying on honors those we've lost
Oct. 12, 2004, was a Tuesday, a beautiful bonus summer-like blue sky sunshiny autumn day. It was a day I will never forget ... not the sunshine or the sounds or the words that came out of a doctor’s mouth as I stood alone in the “quiet room” at Kootenai Medical Center’s emergency room waiting for my mother to arrive. “We tried to resuscitate him but he was already gone.”

Chronic snoring can cause heart disease
Your heavy snoring can be funny sounding or irritating to your sleep partner, but it certainly is not a joke! ESSAY: 'Am I OK?'
Am I OK that during our traditional Route 91 outing with family and friends an epitome of evil decided to go on a shooting rampage killing 59 and injuring more than 500? Am I OK that when the shooting began two of my daughters were in the direct line of fire and separated from us, not with us in what could have been our last moments? Am I OK with the frozen fear the young blond woman experienced as I prayed with her while huddled in the stands not knowing where the endless rounds were coming from and if they were going to hit us next? Am I OK with finally making it to cover under a grandstand and caring for a man that had been shot? Am I OK with another young woman that looked at me with such fear that she wet herself? Am I OK with the mother that stood wailing next to her dead daughter lying in a wheelbarrow covered by an American flag bandanna? Am I OK after watching a daughter’s face as her mom went in and out of consciousness from a gunshot wound as we waited for a vehicle to transport her?

PATRIOTS: A funny story
With all the attention to patriotism emanating from the White House with regard to the national anthem at football games, honoring the flag and veterans, etc., I remember the story of the little patriot who got five deferments to dodge the draft, who was proud not to pay taxes, who stated that he could grab women by their you-know-what because he thought he was famous, who mentioned that he could shoot somebody in New York and still be elected, who wants to build a wall to keep Mexican rapists out, who is married to a foreign model who was illegally paid for modeling before getting an immigrant work permit. Listen up! Some serious tips on an underused skill
Social work students were learning the value of reflective listening — summarizing what someone has said to show you heard them accurately. At the conclusion of several practice sessions, each student was asked to choose someone with whom they could practice their new skills. One student, Mary, chose her 8-year-old neighbor.
LOOK: LISTEN and LEARN?
Well, maybe not for some of the students I noticed in the two photographs taken at Lake City High School. Travis Campbell took the time to plan and present a very important program for the students at Lake City concerning safety measures to be taken while driving near our area railroad crossings. What a shame that there were some in the audience who felt the messages they were getting on their iPhones deserved their attention more so than Mr. Campbell. Those who were rude enough to do this, in front of a guest speaker, are no doubt the student drivers who pay closer attention to their phones while driving rather than the train that is barreling down on them at a railroad crossing.
PAY: Best is mediocre
Your lead story in Friday’s paper had many holes. Just because you are the highest-paid anything in Idaho doesn’t give you a platform to brag. The fact is, the wages in Idaho are lacking. Idaho, as a whole, ranks 40th in the nation in median income ($48,000). And while 5 percent raises are a step in the right direction, 5 percent in this state is akin to 3 percent in others because the salaries in other states are much higher.

PRO-LIFE: Respectfully disagree?
Larry Tanzer wrote, “I take strong exception to the statement (made by Jim Hollingsworth) in his last paragraph: ‘No one in his right mind would ever vote for someone who is not pro-life.’” This criticism and Larry’s position has enormous contradiction within. Furthermore, Larry said, “I am pro-choice, and am in my right mind!” How can Larry suggest that one who holds to a “pro-choice” position be in their “right mind?” Idaho Statute 18-4001 says “Murder is the unlawful killing of a human being including, but not limited to, a human embryo or fetus, with malice aforethought or the intentional application of torture to a human being, which results in the death of a human being.”

Helpers bring light during dark days
On Monday a quote by Mr. Rogers played over and over in my head. As news reports shed light on the horrific events of the day I looked for the helpers and there really are so many. They will always outnumber the evil doers.
NUKE DEALS: Huh?
Spock to Captain Kirk! North Korea might not want to sign an agreement with us to stop their nuclear program because President Trump said the deal we have with Iran was not a good one — Huh? Presumably Rocket Man would be willing to sign and adhere to such a deal if Trump felt that our deal with Iran was actually a good one — Huh? We should be reassured to hear that The European Union foreign policy chief said that the nuclear agreement we signed with Iran prevented them from pursuing a nuclear program — Huh? How about Chamberlain reassuring Europe that Hitler did not want war!

RACISM: Let's move on
Ralph Ginirio’s wise observations published Oct. 1 in the “Readers Write” section sounded like my father had come back from the dead to drill into my head the fundamental realities of life. As a parent, I passed on the same fundamental truths to my children. When they became parents, they did the same for their offspring.
CAMERON: Dem premise faulty
Steve Cameron’s Sept. 28 piece titled “Where have the Democrats gone?” presents an argument about local and statewide Democratic candidates’ potential based on President Trump’s purportedly low approval ratings. An otherwise interesting argument is substantially weakened by incorrect reasoning about the numbers presented in the article’s graph and text.
EVENT: Teens deserve kudos
Last night my husband and I had the privilege to attend the Lake City High School Arts for Humanity fundraiser for the victims of the hurricanes. The art department, music department, drama department, and the family and consumer science department donated their time, energy and wares to raise money to donate to the Red Cross for aid to the hurricanes’ victims. They sold art, food, sang, played drums, acted — it was amazing! These days with all the terrible news stories of terrible acts committed by teenagers, this showed how the majority of teenagers are good, hardworking, outstanding kids. I was as proud of them as if they were my own. The kids came up with this idea themselves to present this wonderful evening. Coeur d’Alene should salute these remarkable, wonderful students. Kids, you made yourselves and your school shine. We had a great evening thanks to these great kids.

CALIFORNIA: Here we go again
Every once in awhile I read a Coeur d’Alene Press letter to the editor that makes me laugh and cry. Wednesday’s (Sept. 27) example started something like this.
PRO-LIFE: Respectfully disagree
Jim Hollingsworth seems to be a regular writer of letters to the editor. I agree with most points he makes in his latest: DEMS: Can’t win if they’re not pro-life. However, I take strong exception to the statement in his last paragraph: “No one in his right mind would ever vote for someone who is not pro-life.”
Are you ready to end the pain?
If there was a headache & migraine treatment available that could really eliminate your chronic pain, what would you be free to do? How about…you would be free to do anything you want to do!!! How about…you would be free to do all those things you have put off for so long! How about…you would be free to be the person you really are! You could live free with no limits! If you’re tired of just coping with chronic headache and migraine pain — just putting up with the inconvenience of that nasty headache, there is help that could put that pain behind you.
Exhausted, worn out, sooooo tired!
These complaints are so common today, that to NOT hear them now seems odd. There are many, many reasons for fatigue, and therefore, a good comprehensive evaluation is necessary if the underlying reason for the fatigue is to be illuminated, and therefore resolved.
DRIVERS: Learn roundabout rules

The quest for the perfect burger
I love a great burger. Pure beef, freshly ground meat topped with seasonally fresh vegetables and grilled medium rare satisfies every taste bud in my mouth. Salt is important — enough to enhance the flavor while not overpowering the burger, making the sandwich taste like the ocean. Pepper? Yes; just enough to add heat without noticing why the heat is there.

Spinal decompression option safe, noninvasive procedure

VIOLENCE: Look at Hollywood
The country needs to have a discussion on these recurring heinous events that seem to plague this nation. Perhaps it should begin not with guns, but instead with Hollywood’s glorification of murder and video games that do the same. PLAYERS: Entitlement mentality
In response to Mr. Knight’s letter of Sept. 29, I am in total agreement. The basic problem is not politics, as those who are most vocal against anything affecting our nation today cannot most likely even spell “politics.” The football players who are using their playing field and TV screen time to allegedly protest some imaginary “racial inequality” are instead defiling our own American flag, our own country, while at the same time never serving to defend our nation. While they refuse to stand for our flag, they certainly pocket very fast the MILLIONS of dollars they earn in the very country they refuse to HONOR!

IDAHO: Time to rethink high school
I recently watched XQ Super School, a live broadcast that was on all four major U.S. networks. It addressed how America’s high schools are not keeping pace with many other countries. What’s worse is Idaho is ranked one of the lowest in our country. Watching this broadcast brought to my attention that American high schools have primarily been unchanged for more than 100 years. It’s clear we all have a lot of work to do.
Drivers and cellphones just don't mix
