AMERICANS: Meek is great

| October 6, 2017 1:00 AM

For Readers, Writers and Mr. Cohen of Coeur d’Alene whose letter appeared in the Sept. 27 Opinion, “…a Hypocrite’s Rant,” I joyfully add this new motto to “Make America Great Again:” Americans, Be Meek Again.

Meekness, regardless of achieved fame, wealth or other advantage, or with little or none of that, rejects personal pride, intolerance, critical attitudes/speech and selfishness. Instead, a meek individual considers and cares for others more than self, perceiving self as a willing servant to help and encourage other people in victories and joys.

Meek people put on humility, with clear vision taking in the whole picture of another’s circumstances to gain fuller understanding of motives or struggles behind actions or words. Meek Americans can find it easier than proud Americans to love and respect, value others, and realize it is true that on the road leading up to every publicly seen big achiever, are many others — developmentally/physically challenged, diseased, orphaned, maimed, poor, blind, lonely, rejected folks who longed to work in that wonderful venue, but missed.

The child who today watches a sports “star” refuse to publicly honor America’s flag, anthem and potential at an event where the national standard is lovingly raised, could be the same person 10 years hence who defends us against crimes/terrorism, dies, or otherwise sacrifices for our existence. God, who sees all, has chosen invisibility (except for Jesus’ years on Earth) — the ultimate example of meekness.
