Lake City clinches league title

| October 3, 2017 11:02 PM

POST FALLS — Even on an off night, the Lake City Timberwolves did enough to get a win.

And the 5A Inland Empire League title to boot.

Arlaina Stephenson had 20 kills, Ashley Kaufman 18 kills and three aces for the Timberwolves in a 25-22, 19-25, 25-18, 25-20 win over the Post Falls Trojans in a 5A IEL match at The Arena on Tuesday.

It’s the third straight league title for Lake City (23-1, 5-0 5A IEL), which won it outright last year as well, after sharing the title in 2015.

“Every match, they seem to be focused and driven on winning,” first-year Lake City coach Mike Summers said. “Tonight, it was about us being a little tired from last weekend’s tournament (at Rocky Mountain High in Meridian) and also sick. We had a couple under the weather and didn’t play well at all. We were lucky to scoot out of the gym with a win tonight. We need to rest, get better and back to playing like we’re capable of.”

Allison Munday had 18 kills and three aces for Post Falls (22-11, 1-4). Courtney Finney had 20 assists, Macky Morris 23 digs, Tessa Sarff and Sydney Parks three blocks each, Alison Carpenter three aces.

“What a fun match,” Post Falls coach Matt Barkley said. “Both teams battled hard during some long and intense rallies. We started a little slow in a couple sets and you can’t do that against a team like Lake City. We played some great defense, digging nearly everything that came our way. I am really proud of how hard our girls battled tonight.”

Lake City travels to Eastmont High of Wenatchee on Saturday.

Post Falls hosts Lewiston next Tuesday to conclude the regular season.
