CHS girls win, set up soccer title showdown
COEUR d’ALENE — A converted free kick and penalty kick from senior Kylie Hanson provide Coeur d’Alene with just enough scoring, and the Viking girls soccer team held off visiting Post Falls 2-1 on Monday in 5A Inland Empire League action.
Coeur d’Alene (8-4, 4-1 IEL) peppered Trojan goalie Maddie Grangaard with 20 shots on goal, but the senior goalkeeper saved 18 of them to keep Post Falls in the game.
“She had an unbelievable game — she had four or five saves that should have been goals,” CHS coach Andy Vrendenburg said. “Post Falls packed it in and defended well — they kept us at bay and their keeper really kept them in it.”
After Hanson’s 25-yard free kick put the Vikings ahead in the first half, Post Falls’ Bethany Gilmor tied the score 12 minutes after intermission, deflecting a shot off a CHS defender. But Hanson converted a penalty kick in the 77th minute to win the game.
“Kylie came through in the clutch,” Vrendenburg said. “She kept the pressure on them all game, with two other shots that could have been goals. One hit the crossbar, and the other shot, I don’t know how their keeper saved it.
“Overall, it was a great bounce-back game for us after a tough loss to Lake City (on Saturday),” he added. “Now we’ve got another shot at them under the lights on Thursday.”
Post Falls coach Steve Mills thought his team played much better than in its previous 5-0 loss to Coeur d’Alene.
“The girls played really well tonight. Both teams played hard and aggressive and it was a fun game to watch,” Mills said. “Unfortunately for us, two called penalties resulted in two goals for the Vikings.
“I want to commend Lauren Hoffeld, Morgan Rust, and Abby Gennett, they were rock solid on defense. Maddie Lasher, and Rickie Colosimo worked really well together on the offensive side of the ball.”
Coeur d’Alene hosts Lake City at 7 p.m. Thursday on the CHS football field, with the league title on the line. Post Falls (3-6-3, 2-3-1) travels to Sandpoint today.

COEUR d’ALENE — Sarah Hines recorded a hat trick while Maddie MacKinney and Lauryn Keith had two goals each to lead the host Panthers to an Intermountain League victory at the United Methodist Community Church soccer field.
“It was fun to see Maddie MacKinney, a senior, get a few goals on senior night,” Charter coach Stacy Smith said. “We started a little slow all over the field, but once we started making better decisions in the middle and final thirds of the field, things began to click on goal.
“I can’t believe next week we have districts already. This season has seemed to fly by.”
Shea Curran recorded 17 saves for Kellogg in a game which featured 30-minute halves due to daylight issues.
