Vikings, T-Wolves tie in 'weird ... fluky' game
- BOYS
COEUR d’ALENE — With only a few games remaining, things got even tighter on Saturday in the race for the 5A Inland Empire League boys soccer championship.
The Lake City Timberwolves and Coeur d’Alene Vikings played to a 2-2 draw at Coeur d’Alene, the first in two matchups between the schools in the final week of the season.
“Today’s game was a complete circus a little bit,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Lake said. “It was really kind weird with some fluky goals.”
Coeur d’Alene (8-2-1, 3-1-1 5A IEL) and Lake City (4-2-2, 2-1-1) remain behind Post Falls (4-2 in league) for the league title, but either could jump the Trojans for the league title should they win out.
Cameron Dance had a goal and an assist for Coeur d’Alene, which travels to Lake City on Thursday. Lake City visits Lewiston on Tuesday.
First half — 1, LC, own goal, 28:00. Second half — 2, Cd’A, Cameron Dance (Greg DeVerna), 42:00. 3, LC, Ty Shaw (unassisted), 62:00. 4, Cd’A, Gabe Nazemi (Dance), 69:00.

RATHDRUM — Dade McDevitt’s penalty kick put the host Hawks up 3-2 at the half, but the Bengals scored the lone goal of the second half to salvage the nonleague tie at Sunrise Rotary Fields.
Lakeland (3-8-1) came into the game with just one substitute available, due to injuries. Two players got hurt during the game, but one was able to return.
“It was a tale of two halves,” Lakeland coach Jeremiah Beckett said. “We owned the first half, they owned the second. We played the full 80 minutes as hard as we could, but not having the ability to have fresh legs at the end killed us.”
Lewiston is 3-8-1.
Lakeland closes out the regular season Tuesday at home vs. Moscow in 4A Inland Empire League play.

Ryan Rucklick scored in the third minute for Grangeville, snapping a streak of eight straight shutouts for St. Maries, which scored four of the final five goals in the match.
“It was fun while it lasted, but fun,” St. Maries coach Chris Renaldo said of the scoreless streak. “We had some new players in different spots and gave up two goals right away. Our kids came back and played well. I think the streak was stressing them out and Grangeville did a good job today.”

COEUR d’ALENE — Capi Halliday had six saves in the shutout for the host Timberwolves in a 5A Inland Empire League win against the Vikings at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex.
“We were good in all aspects of the game,” Lake City coach Matt Ruchti said. “Up top, in the middle and back. Nothing changed from how we played in the first half to the second half. We worked hard for our chances and put our opportunities away. They’re a good team and (Coeur d’Alene coach) Andy (Vredenburg) does a great job with that group. We had a good day of limiting their opportunities. These are tough games, but we had a good gameplan, and executed perfectly.”
