Metabolic syndrome: Yesterdays lifestyle, todays disease
Metabolic syndrome is combination of issues that occur together and increase your risk of heart disease, cancer and early death. It is characterized as having high blood pressure, elevated glucose levels, elevated cholesterol levels (high triglycerides, low HDL, high LDL) and a waist circumference of at least 40 inches in men and 35 inches in women. Men this is around the waist line not under the belly, as we know many of us say we are still fit in a 34 inch waisted pants. Many people, men and women, fit in to this category or are well on their way to having this condition.

All about dental implants
In the mid 1950s, a historically significant event occurred that would lead to one of the biggest revolutions in dentistry. A material was found - titanium - that would actually adhere to bone. And as boring and mundane as this might sound to your average reader, this was actually huge news in the medical/dental world, and would eventually form the entire foundation of modern implant dentistry.

I can't believe it's not butter?
For decades, saturated fat has been blamed for heart disease and high cholesterol. Low fat diets became widely accepted after a study by Dr. Ancel Keys in the mid-20th century gained popularity amongst the scientific community, which concluded that people who consume less dietary fat and a more plant-based diet have lower rates of heart disease. Since then, consumers have been advised to strictly limit fat intake and replace butter (high in saturated fat) with processed vegetable oil products (high in polyunsaturated fats) such as soybean oil, canola oil, and margarine. However, Dr. Keys' study was only one of many at the time. In reality, it presented conflicting information and omitted large amounts of data that contradicted his research. A large body of research has since suggested that heart disease is not a direct result of saturated fat intake, but rather an imbalance of the omega-6 to omega-3 ratio and overconsumption of processed carbohydrates. In fact, a recent meta-analysis published in the Annals of Internal Medicine by Dr. Rajiv Chowdhury determined that saturated fat is not significantly associated with increased risk of heart disease.

Motor vehicle accidents: When should I get evaluated for injuries?
The answer is immediately following the accident, even if you don't have any pain. The reason for this is that many individuals do not display symptoms for days, weeks or even months after the incident. It is important to have a thorough evaluation by a qualified physician, either your family physician or a chiropractor to determine if you sustained any injuries or complicating factors of previous health concerns. Some family physicians may even make a recommendation for physical therapy or chiropractic care.

The doc is always in
Early one morning I was out exercising and I heard this crazy goose honking overhead for what seemed like forever. I caught glimpses of him here and there through the trees, but I couldn't tell if he was lost from his mate or just trying to get all the other gaggle of geese to set-up for their trip north. Pretty soon I saw him again alone on the lake paddling along, no other geese in sight. We are all like this at sometime or another, motoring along in life and we get stuck and then we start calling everyone and trying to see what we should do to take care of whatever is ailing us.

Cancer concerns
Cancer is probably one of the most controversial subjects today. When doing research on cancer statistics, it appears cancer is on the decline. Yet the numbers of people we encounter that succumb to cancer is clearly increasing. How can that be? There are many answers to that question. One reason is that the types of cancers are now being redefined, re-categorized, and there continues to be a profound increase in "newly discovered" types of cancers.

LUCKY: 96, and well fed
My wife and I were having dinner at our favorite Mexican restaurant on Government Way. We were talking to the manager about it being my 96th birthday. People across from us asked — are you really 96? I thought why in the world would they do that?
ISLAM: Muslims vs. Christians
Agree with Shahram Hadian’s analysis of the Islamic threat on some points, but I strongly disagree on others. For example, “Radical Islam is a creeping menace in the world and it won’t rest until all are subject to Islamic or Sharia law.” This statement would be true if one were to remove the word “Radical” from the sentence. If it were just radical Islam, Mr. Hadian, then where is the public outrage on behalf of the other billion Muslims scattered across the world?

Autoimmune diseases are red flags
Autoimmune diseases such as Grave's Disease (thyroid), Rheumatoid arthritis, Scleroderma (skin), Crohn's Disease (bowels), etc. are red flags that the body is getting into serious trouble. All humans appear to have some type of autoimmune vector in their body. All have cancer cells. All have cholesterol plaque on their arteries. All carry viruses and bacteria known to cause serious infections. Even infants are born with these things, including a viral load.

Planting healthy habits
Every year, Kid Healthy Week is celebrated in the last week of April, recognizing health and wellness efforts made by schools and their community partners to improve nutrition and physical activity habits in youth. There is a link between health status and learning. Those who engage in regular physical activity and make nutritious food choices tend to more attentive in class and earn better grades. Obviously schools play a major role in providing health promotion programs for their students, but how can community partners, organizations, and families support these efforts?
Navigation
I turned on Apple Maps as I left the airport. It was late and I worked all day and then had to fly to a conference. I had to be there early the next morning in a city I hadn't been to in years. I was staying with some friends, but there was a new toll road I could take to get to their house quicker and for some reason nothing leaving the airport looked familiar. A wave of anticipation came over me as I waited for the sound of my navigation system to come on. It felt like forever and then there she was, that familiar sound of a person I don't even know telling me where to go. I was so trusting of her and believed she could get me where I needed to go. Well that is exactly what happened. In absolutely no time I pulled up to their front door, no wrong turns, no worries.

A seasonal salmon primer: King salmon
King salmon, also known by its Native American name "chinook," earns the title. Sovereignty a key reason to hold child-support bill
Senate Bill S1067 is basically a 31-page document which has caused great concern among many Idaho Representatives as well as our constituents. This is an international treaty and Idaho will be held to international law and its consequences. We are concerned about protecting the sovereignty of Idaho. The United States government has made coercive threats of withholding federal funds from Idaho's child support programs, insisting Idaho recognize orders from foreign countries with little recourse or appeal.

Modern day technology is having a negative effect on our spine and body mechanics. Think back to 10 years ago, cell phone usage wasn't anywhere near what it is today. Nowadays, however, it seems the average age to receive your first smart phone is around 10 years old. Below are some details about the bad cell phone habits the doctors at Optimal Chiropractic see with many patients.

A primer on Jesuits, other Catholic Orders
Sometimes it's easy to forget that although the vast majority of Americans identify as Christian, this does not necessarily mean each American is familiar with characteristics of all or even most denominations. As the oldest Christian denomination, Catholicism is complex in structure and rich in history. Both may lend it to be more readily misunderstood, as illustrated in a recent bout of letters to the editor attacking and defending the Jesuit Order.

Rep. Sims: Sovereignty key reason to hold child-support bill

Just want to thank Sholeh Patrick for her column on Islam and Sharia law. I was recently lucky enough to land a job that has me working about half the week in our lovely downtown area. Little did I know of the nightmare I would face trying to park downtown.
SHOLEH: She - and Islam - offend
Once again Sholeh Patrick reveals her ignorance (“Sharia, Islam far from uniform” April 14), regarding false religions which hold many souls captive; this time it’s Islam. Once again she condemns Idaho lawmakers, this time for rightfully rejecting inclusions of Sharia law into our Constitution. Again she makes no pleas for her case other than proclaiming herself to be the watchdog for human rights as she mocks the noble and heroic efforts of a few lawmakers to reject a false religion’s influence on our lawmaking processes. In her article she refers to the use of violence by a few Islamic terrorists (Muslims) as the exception and not the rule. The fact that she believes most Muslims are peaceful does not alter the truth that the Islamic religion, as instituted by Mohammed its founder, requires the conquest of all unbelievers through use of force and violence.

Grandstanding at expense of Idaho's most vulnerable
An unfortunate split decision by the Judiciary and Rules Committee in the House of Representatives will hurt the most vulnerable in Idaho. Nine members of that committee voted against eight others, including myself, to kill a bill that was critical to child support collection. Their action endangers about $200 million in support to children in single parent homes all over Idaho, and will cost the state of Idaho $47 million in federal funding (equivalent to 50 percent of the amount of money the Legislature stayed in Boise an extra three weeks trying to find for transportation).

Auto-immune challenges
In health and healing circles, there are different belief systems regarding the cause of disease. Two of the opposites are: "pathogens (bacteria, viruses, molds, yeasts, parasites) attack the body and cause disease, therefore we have to kill them." We use harsh drugs to poison these "bad invaders," at the risk of killing the "good guys," and in the hopes that the human host can withstand the treatment.

Pain can be debilitating, affecting not only how we feel, but our quality of life. For many it is about restoring their quality of life so that they can play with their children or grandchildren, walk around the block, ride a bike or simply enjoy a movie. Today, we have many options that help us deal with pain, but most of the remedies simply cover up our symptoms. The true path to recovery is finding out what the cause of the pain and trying to break the pattern or pain cycle.

With dinner soon approaching, it is finally time to indulge in the meal spent simmering all afternoon in the slow cooker. After a quick taste test, there seems to be just something missing. In times like these, wouldn't it be nice to have fresh herbs available on demand? Fresh herbs can provide delicate yet intense flavor blends that are superior to dried herbs and are higher in nutritional value as well.

Chemical peels are a treatment in which a chemical solution is applied to the skin, forcing the skin to exfoliate and peel. The new skin is typically smoother and less wrinkled. Various peels are available including glycolic acid which targets fines lines and uneven skin tone, salicylic acid which targets oil and acne prone skin, and pigment peels which target hyperpigmented areas, freckles and age spots. For a less intense experience, sensitive skin peels are also available.

JESUIT: History should be factual
The writer Herndon in his April 12 letter to the editor, citing his disdain and hatred for the Catholic Church while excusing Catholics, whom he seems to like very much, seems peculiar to say the least. The problem with anti-Catholic claims is that they are just that — claims with no evidence to support them. The trickery in making a positive claim (there IS a secret Jesuit history versus there is NOT one) is that one must provide a negative one in its place. In this case, this concocted history of the Jesuits, requires a negative to refute. In other words, if one can’t prove them wrong than they (Paris and Rivera) must be right. It’s the classic “you can’t prove me wrong approach.” Herndon expects citations of other persecutors (Edmond Paris and Alberto Rivera) of Holy Mother Church to give him credibility. These men hold the same hatred as he himself adheres to, using myths and slander designed to deceive souls and lead them away from the true faith. Alberto Rivera, an apostate Priest, is a likely candidate supporting his wild claims against the Jesuits. Comic book series; Really?

JESUIT: Attacks are nothing new
Having just returned from Sunday Mass celebrated by a Jesuit priest from Gonzaga (a “hotbed” of Jesuit activity) I feel compelled to respond to Wilson Herndon’s letter of this same date — April 12. As a Catholic, I am used to attacks upon my church which have been launched continuously for 2,000 years. I generally ignore them as they are weak compared to “the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it.” Yet this one is different in that it is launched against one specific component of the church — the Jesuits. They have never been a “militia” and they do not infiltrate other religions for whatever mysterious plots are implied. Mr. Hendon refers to a book and a comic strip which allegedly prove his case. If he wishes to compensate me for my time and effort I will gladly compile a list of publications trashing any or all aspects of my church. How many would he like? Ten? A hundred? Several thousand? It is often remarked that anti-Catholicism is the last accepted bigotry. Mr. Hendon claims to not be anti-Catholic but simply wishes to expose “evil.” To paraphrase an old saying: “With friends like that, who needs enemies?”

Fear is never the right reason to make law, or in this case, to unmake it. My Garden Path
April 1 marks opening day for most of our local greenhouses. It's great to have places where we can buy plants that are grown for our area. Too often the big box stores have plants for sale that are either offered too early in the season to survive here, or my personal favorite: plants that may be perennials elsewhere, but will not live past the summer months here. Remember the old adage, "let the buyer beware."

PHOTO: Editorial bit too hard
I have said little, in a comparatively polite manner, about this debacle. However, I must speak up about your editorial, “Sometimes, Social media Bites.” It is true that often, little can be gleaned from one picture. However, in this case, it is 100 percent clear that the dog is uncomfortable. What detractors have failed to hear, is that it is easy to tell an appeasing grin from a snarl. Numerous bodily signals accompany each, and these CAN be seen in the photo in question. Secondly, while it CANNOT be determined from the picture what the dog was upset about, this is immaterial. Regardless of the primary trigger, a baby that close to the face of a dog that uncomfortable is vulnerable to a redirected bite; or, could become a secondary trigger.
PHOTO: Picture told 1,000 words
So you’ve done it again. Blame the people who are worried about a child getting bitten instead of the editorial decision you made to print this picture. “Experts” saw a picture that could encourage other parents to put their children in danger. I don’t have to know the dog or the family to know that this is not a good idea.

When it comes to the residential real estate market, stories are varied. In the Coeur d'Alene Multiple Listing Service there are several stories too but they add up to a pretty positive view of local real estate. As you know every market has micro markets (neighborhoods) that make up the whole picture. Our MLS covers a large portion of the Idaho panhandle and when we lump it all together our year to date statistics show continued growth in volume and appreciation.

If you have been following this malfeasance of duty, as I have, you may recall that this case began over three years ago when it came to light that Kevin Mitchell and his daughter, Sarah, accepted money for the purchase of gold or silver coins which the victims never received, making numerous excuses for non-delivery. The detectives from Coeur d'Alene Police Department conducted an investigation into this fraud and subsequently submitted their findings to Prosecuting Attorney Barry McHugh. A sweet-and-sour dish that will have you ditching take-out
There is just something disgustingly delicious about sweet-and-sour chicken, that deep-fried, sugar-slathered staple of Asian take-out. That cloying sauce, that crispy-fried breading, those sweet morsels of warm pineapple... No matter how bad I know it is for me - and how badly executed the dish usually is - I still manage to crave it regularly.
Public health: Building healthy communities
This week celebrates National Public Health. Each day focuses on a theme. Monday was "Raising the Grade," to spark talks about the health of our nation and measures of good health. Tuesday was "Starting from Zip," with the idea that the zip code may have a lot to do with health disparities. Today's theme is "Building Momentum," to celebrate efforts that have been made thus far as a commitment to America's public health. "Building Broader Connections" is the theme for tomorrow, stating that we cannot battle public health concerns on our own. Collaborating with community partners who have a stake in making an impact on public wellness will strengthen our efforts toward healthier communities. Friday celebrates the 20th year of National Public Health Week and accomplishments made in communities, but this day also creates awareness about the work that lies ahead.

Living in The Gap
Our Idaho Legislators are packing up and heading home for the interim. While I am sure many of them feel they accomplished something this legislative session and represented their constituents adequately, all of them bear responsibility for leaving something vital undone - Medicaid redesign. For myself, and many Idahoans, adoption of the Healthy Idaho Plan would make a profound impact in our lives. I work hard but don't make enough to qualify for affordable health insurance. I'd like to share my story with you, in the hopes that it will dispel some of the myths about Idaho's working poor and the Medicaid gap.
Testosterone in men
The counterpart to the female menopause is called andropause (or the "male menopause"). Testosterone levels in men begins to decline with aging beginning in the early 30s, and by age 40 levels naturally decline by one percent per year. However, the decline in male hormone production is much more gradual than the decline in female hormone production.

We invest our time everyday for a myriad of things: work, play and a constant litany of choices. Our time becomes our choices. Our choices then define our life. Carpal tunnel syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) belongs to a group of disorders referred to as cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs). With CTS, the cumulative wear and tear of a repetitive motion can cause injury to the upper extremity. This can result in changes in movement intended to avoid further injury that then overstress another part of the arm, leading to a second injury. It can become like a chain reaction of injury after injury eventually resulting in multiple conditions between the neck and hand.

EASTER: Back to basics
If you strip away the chocolate bunnies and colored eggs, the Easter celebration, established during Constantine’s reign in the 330s AD, was to commemorate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Jewish historian, Flavius Josephus’ Testimony of Christ Antiquities, XVll1 iii, Volume 2, page 443, records Christ’s death and resurrection as being April 3 & 5, 33 AD. If his record is correct, Easter does fall on the true calendar date this year. In chapter 3 of the Acts of the Apostle’s, Peter and John are found preaching Christ’s resurrection at Solomon’s porch and healing the lame. The date of this occurrence was probably 34-35 AD and although the preaching of the time had no formal name the sermon commemorated the resurrection. The oldest written account of Christ’s resurrection was recorded in 1st Corinthians by Paul, in Ephesus, on his third missionary journey, 56 AD or 57 AD, or 23 to 24 years after Christ’s death.

Kids and healthy eating
As a single parent, I struggle keeping my 9-year old son balanced with healthy food choices. Like many children, my child spends time eating between two homes and school. Tracking what he eats and how healthy it is can be challenging. Finding the best way to give him nutritional education with the right message for eating smart between two homes can be daunting. Since most kids struggle with a craving for sugary foods and veggies are considered awful at best, the goal to keep good food choices on point tends to fall apart between households quickly. One troubling research study indicated children of divorce, especially boys, trend toward being overweight or obese. The cause of this is not clear, but poor eating habits do play a definite role.

FUHLED: Glad joke didn't die
For a week I looked forward to Wednesday to see what joke you would play on us in the paper. To my dismay there was nothing on the front page and then I read your editorial. I couldn’t believe that so many people would have no sense of humor and want the fun to stop. I was bummed for sure and was composing my letter of dismay in my head when lo and behold, there it was in section C. MILFOIL: Lakes have bigger foe
Many of our lakes (including Fernan) have had record algae blooms. Algae wrecks spawning habitat, poisons to humans and animals, and carries the ATCV-1 virus that lowers cognition. TRAPPING: See the ISIS parallel
There is some irony in the parallels between ISIS actions and the Idaho trapping situation. The Middle East is racked with barbaric behaviors from a group under the banner of an out of date, or hijacked religion. It is having a devastating impact upon others who want to enjoy a more modern life. When established in the ‘600s, its principles and values perhaps were consistent with the times. Now the Imams, their religious leaders, need to “Step Up” and lead the transition of that religion from medieval times to modernity. They should preserve the fundamental good parts of their beliefs just as Judaism and Christianity did centuries ago as they were led through their reformations.

Note to Ted Cruz: Not all Christians subscribe to your values. I am one and I don’t. You may be right in your March 24 article that over half of all born-again Christians don’t vote, but I would be surprised if they all would be in your extremely rigid corner if they did come to the polls. And I’d suspect that even if they believed the way that you think everybody should, they might not want their government ruled in such a restrictive way.

If Kootenai County wants to locally direct its land use, then it needs to be proactive in keeping basic standards in place that support a wide range of benefits to Idaho citizens and natural resources. Commissioners want to change ordinances to eliminate ANY natural vegetative buffer along shoreline properties. Revisions show benefits to few new shoreline owners and big development, while ignoring the benefits of natural vegetative buffers to all other interests. In Bonner County, water setbacks are 40 feet along lakes, 75 feet along rivers. Most everywhere there are waterfront buffers because it’s a FACT that they:

'I'm exhausted, wiped out, and so tired!' Part 1
These complaints are so common today, that to not hear them now seems odd. There are many, many reasons for fatigue, and therefore, a good comprehensive evaluation is necessary if the underlying reason for the fatigue is to be illuminated and resolved. Unfortunately, the common treatment is to just call it depression or anxiety and administer psychotropic drugs.

ISIS: Ominous shades of Hitler's Germany
ISIS is in the news for its barbaric and torturous advance in Iraq and Syria. According to news reports, it has carried out an attack on a Saudi Arabian border patrol near the city of Arar, which is located northeast of Saudi Arabia on the Iraqi border. As bizarre as it seems, ISIS is only one in a series of atrocities in world history.

PLANNING: Rural has no voice
Last Thursday, the County Planning Commission held its monthly workshop. The new draft for the Land Use Plan (zoning) was discussed together with a proposed new comprehensive plan. The public’s lingering distrust was immediately apparent. Three of the commissioners seemed to be offended by a comment from a member of the audience that all seven commissioners reside in a small area around Post Falls and Coeur d’Alene, with no commissioners from any of the outlying rural areas. More on that later. Responses from these three commissioners were not just defensive, they were arrogant, rude and condescending. A series of rapid-fire questions from one commissioner to the Director of Planning on what the Planning Commission is not was the low point of the evening. Then two commissioners took the opportunity to lecture the audience on their failures in voting or not voting at the last election. Another commissioner held one citizen at the podium after his presentation to publicly admonish him for something he said or may have said at a different time and a different place.

This Easter, master perfectly creamy scalloped potatoes
With Easter on its way, my mind has turned to scalloped potatoes, always a big hit at a holiday feast. And really, what's not to love? We're talking about sliced potatoes baked in a cream sauce, then topped with cheese or crumbs or both! Still, it takes some care to ensure that the potatoes are properly seasoned, properly tender, and creamy as a dream.
Testosterone in women: How important is it?
Testosterone is another important hormone necessary for your personal hormonal symphony. Testosterone loss can occur at any time in a woman's life. Deficiencies can begin with menopause, but can also occur after childbirth. Hormone levels are often 'reset' after childbirth, however, not always correctly. Other factors that can lower testosterone levels include: chemotherapy, adrenal stress and burnout, endometriosis, depression, birth control pills, psychological trauma, and statin drugs. Deficiencies occur earlier and initially at a greater rate in women than in men. High amounts of testosterone are consumed, thereby depleting androgen levels with intense physical activity, such as long distance running and other vigorous sports.
Arsenic and other issues
We taste and have wines on our shelves here at the dinner party that range from the very inexpensive - around $10 per bottle - to prices many of us would find unreasonable to pay for a single bottle of wine. There are customers and markets for all of them. It goes without saying that much more care, attention, and quality goes into premium bottles of wine than the value priced ones. From farming methods and crop levels, to the time wines spend in barrels and fermenters, all have an impact on what a bottle costs to produce, and ultimately the quality of the end product.

Little did I know how complicated it would be to do such a thing in a different area of the country.
