Kootenai Health, Kindred earn awards

Qualis Health, a national population health management organization, will present the Idaho Awards of Excellence in Healthcare Quality on April 16.

Kootenai Health and Kindred Nursing and Rehabilitation in Kellogg are among four Idaho health care organizations that will be recognized for their achievements in improving healthcare quality and outcomes.

* Award of Excellence: Post-Acute/Long-Term Care - Kindred Nursing and Rehabilitation, Kellogg, for their project "Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement: from Theory to Practice, Implementing the Five Elements to Fall Reduction"

* Award of Excellence: Hospital - Kootenai Health, Coeur d'Alene, for their project "Safe Specimen Labeling"

Kootenai Health representatives explained their award-winning project.

Technology has changed the way lab specimens are received and processed, they said. What used to be a manual process with lab staff identifying specimens that were labeled with a patient's name has transitioned to specimens being bar-coded and scanned using an electronic reader.

The lab at Kootenai Health recognized that many specimens being sent to the lab were not properly labeled and still had to be processed manually. Lab staff worked with nurses, information technology and many others throughout Kootenai Health to ensure all specimens are properly labeled for electronic scanning.

"This project was all about improving safety and reducing the time it takes to produce lab results," said Kathy Gemar, laboratory services director at Kootenai Health. "We are honored to have our work recognized by Qualis Health with their Award of Excellence."
