NEWS: Good, bad, ugly
For the good, I would like to highlight our friend, Rita Sims Snyder. She has worked tirelessly in our community for the last several years to help make us a community we could be proud of and she has truly done a fine job of that. Her latest endeavor which will bring joy to all the good folks in our community as well as out-of-towners, is the wonderful carousel being constructed near the ball park. Rita, along with our mayor and many volunteers, have spent many hours bringing this project to life. Come spring, we will all have a chance to enjoy the fruits of their labor. Thank you Rita for all you do and for being a part of our lives. The town and community are a better place for sure.

CHURCH: Message is true
I’m sorry that Annika Holmes was disturbed by Pastor Paul’s message at Candlelight Christian Fellowship on Oct 23. This message did not reflect his usual Bible teaching. But trust that his message is vital in this election cycle. It needs to be delivered by other Christian ministers to their congregations and is based on the words of Jesus.

Meshing IT with health care
While doctors and nurses may be the public face of the health care industry, many people also work behind the scenes to keep hospitals and care facilities running smoothly — such as health care computer technicians, who install, manage and troubleshoot IT systems in medical and clinical settings. North Idaho College offers a two-year Healthcare Computer Technician program (formerly called Healthcare Informatics Technician) to fulfill this industry need. Students can earn either a certificate or an associate’s degree in the program.

No doubt many people looking for a dynamic Bible church will read your review and choose to attend Candlelight as a result. Most Christians are tired of feel-good, milquetoast sermons which leave them without clear application to the daily issues we all face.

Educated agents try harder
When looking to invest your hard earned dollars in real estate you want expert representation from your agent. For most people a real estate investment is the largest of a lifetime so getting it right is critical. Some transactions are more complicated than others and often even seasoned agents need guidance or advice. Admitting that they need advice is tantamount to being educated and responsible and is a good sign you have a caring agent.
RIGGED: Winners take all
I have a suggestion for all you coaches and managers out there. Next time you play in an important or championship game, tell the officials that you will only accept the results if you win. But, if you make bad plays and stupid mistakes and lose, then refuse to accept the loss. You can claim it’s because the game was “RIGGED.” You could also blame the media for favoring the other team. If all else fails, then threaten them with a lawsuit.

TAX HIKES: Hard on seniors
As a retired old coot, I have the opportunity to ponder things. Some of those things are how our seniors on fixed incomes are supposed to keep up with property taxes that keep on rising. They are endlessly hit by the city, county and schools with property taxes. Folks that have worked hard, paid off mortgages and eventually retired are told that it’s only “x” amount of dollars per assessment and that it’s just a little here and there.

AMADOR: Building a bridge
I have had the pleasure of meeting both candidates running for Idaho House Seat 4B at numerous events over the years. One thing that resonates with me is Paul Amador’s ability to remember everyone that he meets, even if it’s only once, because he truly cares about every member of our community. After getting to know Paul and his wife Julie over time, we consider the Amadors our friends and there is no one else we would want to see elected this November.
McKENZIE: For Supreme Court
Senator Curt McKenzie is a solid, longtime supporter of Freedom for Idaho citizens. His tireless work as the Chairman of The Senate State Affairs Committee has ensured that our firearms rights, both under Idaho Constitution Article 1, Section 11 and the U.S. Constitution’s Second Amendment, have not been abridged. Not only has Senator McKenzie shepherded these bills through our legislative processes, he has been the author of several of them. Senator McKenzie is one of the leading pro firearms rights state senators in the country which has earned him an “A+” rating from the National Rifle Association.
TRUMP: Not now, not ever

GFELLER: Trustworthy choice
Who do we want for Trustee on the North Idaho College board? In my opinion Mr. Gfeller is the best candidate. He has spent 38 years with Avista, working his way from the ditch to management. During this time he also put in the effort to earn a B.A. and M.A. in organizational leadership.
HJR 5 will give power to the people
The constitutional amendment on this year’s ballot needs to be understood in a more basic way than it has been previously explained. KCTFHR: We object
Regarding Ralph D. Shay’s triple response in the Friday, Oct. 14 letter to the editor, he has, it seems, the often repeated (script-like), closed-minded, left-wing, Gestapo jack-booted Kootenai County Task Force on Human Relations hypnotic response! Anyone that thinks differently (duh it’s America dude) is a bigot and how dare we accept the Republican Party (he supports the criminal Clinton and the Democrats who supported slavery)!
SOUZA: Deeply committed
I have been a fan of Senator Mary Souza for a very long time — and she is a star. She has the skill set that every community needs and hopes for when it is time to step forward to represent them and to fight for their causes. Senator Souza is extremely intelligent, caring and deeply committed to what’s important to Coeur d’Alene as well as all of Idaho.
MILAN: Works with everyone
I would like to encourage voters to consider Kristi Milan for the position of State Senator from District 4. When I was the Superintendent of Schools for District 271, I worked closely with Kristi and the teacher negotiations team to resolve a labor dispute and avoid a possible strike. We were able to come together and help the teams reach agreement. Throughout the process, and others, I came to realize Kristi has the ability to work with people who have different interests and concerns and come up with positive solutions.
HEARN: A community servant
I enjoyed Jim Michaud’s letter, headed “Guilty of Integrity,” reminding us of yet another reason we are fortunate to have Tom Hearn in our community. Most of us are aware of Tom’s leadership to improve public education, but perhaps fewer are aware of his many years of service in the mental health field. As Jim pointed out, Tom is well respected in judicial and legal circles for his professionalism as a mental health provider. His work has benefited children not only by treatment of abuse victims, but also in providing courts and probation officers with valuable information on sex offenders and other defendants to make their sentencing decisions more effective.

ELECTION: Rigged rumors
There is no way in hell the American people can be sure the 2016 presidential election is not rigged. When 16 key states use Smartmatic Voting Machines, Smartmatic Software, and Internet to tally votes for the 2016 election. These machines and software are owned by a company in the United Kingdom run by CEO Baron Mark Mailock-Brown that is affiliated with George Soros. Not only is the opportunity to cheat the count with software but also by an internet hacker. There is no way to prove the vote was rigged because there is no hard copy of the original vote. Also this raises the question of foreign influence on national elections, which is illegal. They only get away with this because they incorporated in Delaware April 11, 2000, which is the easiest state in the union to incorporate.

Big wineries versus small wineries
Which is better big or small? The answer when it comes to production sizes of wineries like most things in life is complicated. The most accurate response is it depends. And the most important determining factor in the answer is your own palate. All of you have read it enough times to know what makes a wine good or not good is how you as the wine consumer feels about it when you taste it. The discussion though is a valid one to have.

INSURANCE: Travel is risky
I agree with Dennis Spencer that the health insurance program has become a debacle. Three years ago the BC Gold plan for a 30-year-old (earning just over the amount allowed for subsidy) was $269. Under the new KCN (Kootenai Network) plan, the premium is $412. Because my 30-year-old works construction throughout the Pacific Northwest, he will consistently be out of Network ($50,000 deductible). It will be cheaper to pay the federal penalty and apply the $412 monthly premium to doctor and hospital payments.
Sleep better and lose weight
Are you struggling to lose weight? Many research studies have been done recently that link lack of hours of sleep or poor quality sleep to weight gain. There are several things your body uses to signal you to eat more or to stop eating. Leptin is one; leptin signals your brain about the energy status of your body.

PRESIDENT: Vote for McMullin
This presidential election is a mess. We have two candidates who would rather denigrate each other than talk about the issues, and we have an American populace who is seemingly stuck having to “vote against” a candidate rather than “voting for” their preferred option, because most of them don’t prefer either option.

BUDGET: End the spend
I read the other day the House of Representatives had passed a budget for the next several months. I would like to thank Raul Labrador for continuing the fight against increased spending. I was saddened to see the federal budget increased last year. Most House Republicans once again failed to keep their promise to stop President Obama’s reckless spending. I hope Mr. Labrador continues to stay strong and fight against the continued spending of taxpayers’ money that belongs to the people and not to the government or Congress. Fight on, Mr. Labrador, for what’s right, and NO more spending.

Bob Dylan doesn't deserve Nobel Prize
It has been a decade since I wrote several articles about Bob Dylan plagiarizing the work of a Civil War poet, Henry Timrod. In those essays, I provided examples of his borrowing verse without attribution. One of my points was that I did not take issue if anyone borrowed (even exact renditions) from others, as long as credit was given to the originator.

AMADOR: Honesty and values
We had never campaigned, or wanted to, for a political candidate until we met Paul Amador. He is definitely worth the effort. He is amazingly intelligent, down to earth with just the right touch of humor. Best of all he has a firm grasp of the needs of Idaho based on his own research rather than someone else’s political persuasiveness. We admire him for his willingness to work for those needs and immerse himself into the community well-being.

DRIVERS: Deer vs. jackasses
On my way into Coeur d’Alene one recent morning I saw another dead deer on the edge of West Riverview Drive, aka “the shortcut” and “let’s see how fast we can go on this narrow winding road.” As I passed her, I wondered how many does this makes this year — more than the last few years by far. Maybe if the insurance companies would treat hitting a deer as an act of God instead of an accident and deny coverage, more people would slow down and be more aware of their surroundings — just a thought.

A walk down memory lane in old haunts
This past week, my sisters and I experienced joy and sorrow with a wedding, a funeral and a baptism. Family was at the forefront, with introspection worn like a familiar patchwork shawl. On Monday I was scrambling like we all do to catch up with life after taking a few days of putting everything on the back burner.
VOTE: Trump is needed
I truly wish we could all see past the garbage and get back to the problems and critical concerns of our nation. I am so weary of the incorrect inferences of the moneyed selfish Republicans and the Democrats as the only ones with social concerns and answers. If anyone would bother to challenge that by doing research it would show the moneyed Democrats may well outnumber the Republicans both in the Congress and political realm and have been playing the system for all it’s worth.
Having a licensed nurse on staff saved my mom's life!
Independent and assisted living communities exist to promote a safe and vibrant environment for residents. Having a nurse on staff can save lives. Licensed nurses are trained professionals that know first-hand the importance of resident care and can assure the timely identification of acute clinical problems. Licensed nurses can optimally monitor, assess and intervene when physical and behavioral changes occur and quickly streamline medical emergencies. Although most states require that all assisted living communities provide sufficient staffing to meet resident’s “scheduled and unscheduled” needs on a 24-hour basis, this does not guarantee that licensed nurses are always on hand. On-site nurses may only be on duty during the day or “on-call.” In fact, the level of care a community offers is directly related to the number of licensed nursing hours they provide. This can make a medical emergency a life or death situation.
ELECTION: It's about 'us'
We live in an “It’s all about me culture!” Unfortunately, too many voters view the upcoming presidential election in the context of “It’s all about me” and which party or candidate will give me the most freebies, or which candidate do I like or dislike the most. Too bad our self-absorbed culture can’t see beyond the candidates and look at what effect the next president will have on our nation.

WRITER: Backing wrong horse
Reading Mr. Koch’s letter last Sunday I’m going to take a wild guess and say that he is a Hillary supporter. You want The Press to endorse Hillary just like most newspapers in large populated areas have done. I hope they don’t and can stay neutral. You know that a majority of the media whatever it may be is in the bag for the Democrats and Hillary. The media has been backing Democrats for years, it’s nothing new and I think more people are waking up to the fact this election cycle. WikiLeaks is coming out with some very damaging emails exposing how corrupt the Democratic Party really is. The media is beating to death the leaked tape of Donald Trump and Billy Bush and barely saying anything about the Hillary emails.
HEARN: Guilty of integrity
Tom Hearn, as a certified mental health practitioner, furnished to me as judge from 1987 to 2002, reports which I used in felony convicted sex offender sentencing proceedings. He also testified in my court. Tom gained a reputation among judges for integrity and professionalism. His appointments by Idaho governors and attorneys general demonstrate his professionalism. His longtime commitment to serving his community and Idaho is proof of his ability and dedication.
MILAN: A new direction
If you have not yet decided on your vote for the District 4 Senate seat, I hope you will consider Kristi Milan. She is a bright, critical thinker who is willing to listen to others and spend time researching the facts. As a retired teacher, she is used to working long hours to achieve important goals. Walking the neighborhoods of our district, she is listening to concerns and values important to individuals. Kristi is committed to keeping our public lands public, properly funding quality public schools, and closing the health care gap. Kristi is tireless, and she will not forget you in Boise. Have the decisions of the past two years reflected the kinds of improvements we need in this state? If not, then voting for Kristi could help right the ship.
Good agent, good service
We all can agree that customer service is important when deciding with whom to spend our money. When contracting for services the requirement for excellent customer service should not be any less than when shopping at your local hardware store or florist. When you are spending money with someone you have a right to expect good — even great — service.
VOTE: And choose Amador
Given the current climate of the presidential race, I have heard many people say they are not going to vote this year. This genuinely concerns me because we have the opportunity to vote for many important local races and we have a responsibility to elect strong local representatives. Early voting has started in Kootenai County and I encourage voters to get to the polls and let their voices be heard.

FIREFIGHTERS: Vote for Malek
The Professional Firefighters of Idaho proudly endorse Luke Malek for House seat 4A. Representative Malek worked tirelessly on a piece of Legislation that we have been trying to pass for 16 years. His commitment and tireless work ethic expands past his District Constituents and he works hard for all Idahoans. This was proven by his effective leadership that resulted in the passage of House Bill 554. Our members who contract cancer will now be able to receive life-saving treatment through benefits provided by the passage of this legislation. On behalf of our 1,250 members, I would urge you to cast your ballot for Luke Malek on Nov. 8.

HJR 5: Just vote no
Senator Risch has lent his support to Idaho’s ballot measure HJR5, but that is a big mistake for Idaho. HJR5 is a well intentioned idea to constitutionally enshrine the legislative power to review administrative rulemaking by the executive branch. A recent Idaho Supreme Court case, which was narrowly won by the legislature, is the motive behind HJR5. But the supporters of HJR5 fail to understand a small but important thing: the last nine words of Article II of the Idaho Constitution: “...except as in this constitution expressly directed or permitted.”

VOTE: For better America
When I was young, things were different. We were different people. We were civil when it came to politics. I was taught that our president was given dignity and respect by all of us. The president represented America, even if we didn’t always agree. We did not make our president the political punching bag in the eyes of the world. Americans carried our identity with honor.

SCHOOLS: Stiff-arming democracy
The claim is that Americans are angry. The finger points at Washington incompetence, but what goes on locally clearly mirrors the national problems!
HEARN: Highway to improvement
I recommend voting for Democrat Tom Hearn for the Idaho Legislature because, among other reasons, of the low level of tax support the Republican-led legislature has given to highway and bridge maintenance. The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) gets most of its funding from state gas taxes and vehicle registration fees. The Republican controlled legislature hasn’t changed gas taxes significantly (even after adding 7 cents per gallon last year) since 1996, and hasn’t adjusted registration fees since 1997.
STEIN: Vote for independents
This Election Day, Nov. 8, it’s imperative you get to your polling place and vote. Our democracy is broken. The definition of a democracy, according to Webster’s dictionary, is a government in which supreme power is held by the people.
HEARN: Superior citizen
Last week we listened to our friend Tom Hearn give a talk. Tom embodies what it means to be a community citizen. He was well prepared. He considered each question from the audience and gave thoughtful, non-scripted answers. He was especially well prepared when responding to problems in education. Tom has devoted his personal and professional life to service to others. He is fiscally conservative and is reluctant to impose his religious and family values on others through the force of law. Most important, he understands that when working together for the public, no single agenda or viewpoint dominates every decision.

POLITICS: A fine mess
While going through some papers on my desk I came across this list that a friend of mine wrote. He is an educated man, a retired attorney. The list really hit home with me. Americans need to ask themselves how did this happen and how do we correct our system of government - not barricade ourselves behind the various politicians and candidates who will only perpetuate and exacerbate the problems that are evident to any honest observer. It was written over 17 years ago. It has only gotten worse. Here’s the list:

So you say you’re not going to vote for Donald Trump? I don’t blame you. However, before you don’t vote for Trump, think about this phrase even though it has nothing to do with the point I am going to make. “The economy, stupid,” is a phrase James Carville had coined as a campaign strategist of Bill Clinton’s successful 1992 presidential campaign against sitting President George H. W. Bush. As a side note I believe if Ross Perot hadn’t been running as a so-called Independent, thus taking votes from George, Bill wouldn’t have won and Hillary wouldn’t be running now. Sorry, I couldn’t help that rabbit trail, back to my point.

Why shouldn’t the Legislature “review any administrative rule to ensure it is consistent with the legislative intent of the statute that the rule was written” for? How logical that sounds.

TRUMP: Words of wisdom
Kudos to Hans Neumann! Well spoken! I absolutely delighted in your letter, “Trump: Hillary more offensive.” I, myself have indulged in “locker room talk/girl talk” such as that mentioned, never worrying that my words would be secretly recorded for posterity! As usual, the inordinate horror expressed by the pure, always tactful liberals over words spoken 11 years ago is over the top. The clear delineation between Trump’s decade old-comments and Hillary’s email scandal is a matter of legality.
TRUMP: The word is 'assault'
Whether by grown men in a private conversation on a bus, by a professor in a class on women’s studies, by a pre-teen on a playground, or by comic with an off-color joke, the words Donald Trump used in 2005 would describe sexual assault. The context of the situation and the intent of the descriptions matter in whether you feel they are reasonably or excusably used. But Trump’s words still describe him perpetrating sexual assault, real or fictitious. Despite his experience with fame and the obvious preparation for an interview, what he undoubtedly thought was a private conversation was overheard and is thus subject to people’s interpretations. But his own words still describe him perpetrating sexual assault.

TRUMP: Media is unfair
The current state of our news media is sickening. The lead story is ALWAYS an attack on Trump followed by a brief mention of the latest Clinton scandal. The latest Wikileaks release revealed collusion between the Clinton campaign and the news media that is corrupt beyond belief. I doubt that is what the founding fathers had in mind when freedom of the press was guaranteed in the Bill Of Rights. I submit NOTHING Donald Trump has ever said in his life had the potential to damage our national security but Clinton setting up a private email server in her basement while Secretary of State DID.
PENSIONS: A public problem

If they choose to fly low and dip their wings in a salute to those of us who also take pride in our flag and country, then I say, GO FOR IT! Do not worry about those who think you may have been too low or too loud. If these same people were on the ground and fighting for their lives in the hell holes where you have to go, I don’t think they would say you were too low or too loud.

Why do we humans eat things that are bad for us? Especially things we KNOW are bad for us? Like sugar.

Self-reflection and your health
Last week a couple of my amazing patients came into my office, on different days, but with the same thoughts, how do we stay well and vibrant as we are aging? Do we just accept and give in to "old age" or do we fight it, which is right? What does it look like to age well? How should you feel about it or does it matter? Why does it seem so daunting of a task? Honestly, I thought a lot about it all week, as I have my parents and my father-in-law that I am observing as they make the trek into the next part of their life.

October is National Long-Term Care Residents’ Rights Month, a time to acknowledge the contributions and sacrifices many long-term care (LTC) residents have made to better our communities and to call attention to the rights of residents in long-term care facilities.
MILAN: Inspirational
I write to you in support of my friend and colleague Kristi Milan. I have worked with Kristi for many years in different capacities and she has always shown the same integrity and grace wherever our missions have led us. While kayaking around Lake Coeur d’Alene in search of turtles or other wildlife, biking through the dark tunnels in Montana and Idaho, or representing Idaho teachers in national conventions, Kristi Milan presented her true self. A woman with empathy, compassion and self-worth who loves her family, loves her state and loves her friends. I can always count on her when the going gets tough, with patience, a sense of humor and relentless spirit. We have fought for the rights of teachers, of students and our beautiful Idaho lands together. She has inspired me to follow my dreams, she has held my hand when things got scary, we laughed when things got crazy and we got dirty when things needed to be cleaned up. A vote for Kristi Milan will ensure the rights of Idaho hunters, Idaho families and Idaho workers. She will work for the state of Idaho to keep the economy strong, the roads and schools safe and the waters and forests clean. Join me in supporting Kristi Milan for State Senator in District 4.
Summer was great while it lasted!
My Garden Path
I made this little “plant pal” from a ping-pong ball and golf tee. She doesn’t look happy about summer being over but so far, we’ve had no frosts in our area. That could change by the time this hits print as we often get some chilly weather by mid-October.
McLAIN: An ideal commissioner
Russell McLain’s name is on the ballot as an Independent running for County Commissioner. Russell communicates well! He is an informed candidate because he asks hard questions and tries to formulate answers about county issues. He is concerned about increasing our job market, bringing in new businesses, keeping county staff through adequate benefits and wages, and updating county policies which cause red tape and hinder county efficiency. In contrast to other opinions, Russell advocates public safety and neighborhood peace through continued use of building permits and inspections. Russell will work well with other commissioners and will work for YOU. To continue excellence in county administration, vote for Russell McLain.

CRAPO: Wrong on Trump
Senator Crapo, your decision to join other gutless Republicans and abandon Donald Trump is nothing but pandering to the lowest of the semi-literate, low information, sexually confused crowd. It is inexcusable and indefensible.
More on closing
A couple of weeks ago we discussed the importance of final documents leading to a solid transaction without surprises. There can be so many documents involved in the process of transferring real estate that sooner or later some folks just want to get on with it. Understandable but this late in the game is no time to become cavalier about what is possibly the largest investment of your life.

The scary side of 'patriotism'
In the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, then U.S. Rep. Butch Otter of Idaho was one of just three Congressional Republicans to vote against The Patriot Act. Otter believed that while some components of the act were important for security, on the whole it represented a serious constitutional threat — a belief later supported in part by the courts.

Airport, Hayden on same team
The Friday, Oct. 7 Press headline “Airport airs Hayden Village worries” and accompanying article were well written, but they may have created the wrong impression in readers’ minds regarding the interaction between the Coeur d’Alene Airport and the city of Hayden. My comments were not intended to imply that the city of Hayden would do anything to put citizens at risk. I apologize if that was the result. Both the current Mayor Griffitts and former Mayor McIntire, as well as the entire Hayden City Council, have expressed their full support of the Coeur d’Alene Airport and we enjoy a very good working relationship with them. In fact, both mayors were instrumental in providing the infrastructure to allow major area employer and airport resident Empire Airlines to remain and prosper in Kootenai County.
Oral health and its impact on fitness
There are so many aspects to a person’s health that can put the brakes on getting fit and being active. Everything from repetitive injuries, poor nutrition, sprains and strains, all the way up to more serious issues such as heart problems can become road blocks. When you think of these different types of health related problems, we don’t usually think to include poor oral health.

The works of Mozart should be recognizable to almost everyone. He’s known as a child prodigy and later a highly acclaimed composer. Psychologically, a headache will steal your life. It will make you be a different person. You never get to be your real self! You really want to live free with no limits. HAGADONE: Testimonial times 22
It’s so amazing that 22 people have worked at The Coeur d’Alene Resort for 25 years or more! That says so much about the example that Duane Hagadone has shown for our area. He sets examples on how to do business right and that’s why he’s been so successful these many years. Honesty and dependability: Can’t go wrong.
KAINE: Nope, not impressed
Hillary’s Guy…a complete flake! If you weren’t concerned enough about the direction our Supreme Court would take, should a Democrat win this election, Hillary’s VP clearly showed us that HE would be totally unqualified to take over should something happen to her! Talk about rude and offensive. He was determined to prevent Governor Pence from speaking and defending Trump’s positions. Kaine’s interruptions were idiotic, desperate and designed only to drown out the sense Pence was making (forget about the lies and twisted rhetoric of the Democrats and media). Whatever some people choose to believe about Mr. Trump and his potential to turn things around for America, Gov. Mike Pence came across as the most believable and honest, knowledgeable, competent and worthy representative. He knows where we hope our country is headed, and shares the support of millions of us. Thank God that intelligent people can see through this haze!
MEDIA: Treat candidates equally
I am totally fed up with our news media — ABC, CBS and NBC! There is no integrity! They bring up whatever they want to on Donald Trump and harp on it for days and let Hillary slide!

Is gluten-free a great idea just for the health of it?
The term “gluten-free” seems to be everywhere these days: at the grocery store, on restaurant menus, and plastered on your favorite social media site. Perhaps you even know one or two people who have eliminated gluten from their diet. What is it about gluten that makes some people want to avoid it, and actually, what is gluten anyway?
TRUMP: Still my guy
I would like to know Mike Crapo and Raul Labrador, Paul Ryan and all the politicians can judge Mr. Trump when I would bet they have sin in their lives that they don’t want the public to know about. The Bible in Mat 7 judge not lest you be judged. It also says that he who is without sin to cast the first stone and I’ll bet they aren’t throwing rocks. I keep forgetting that they are part of the good old establishment that try to make us think that they care about us when they are only trying to fill their own pockets just like the Clintons.

Foggy thinking in the brain
Are you finding that your brain just doesn’t seem as clear as it used to be? Poor memory, difficulty concentrating, inability to recall words, just feeling foggy? There are many things that can contribute to “foggy thinking” (as I’ll refer to all of the above collectively), and there are several things you can do to combat it. Some authorities say that foggy thinking precedes dementia, something we all want to prevent. So what are the contributing factors?

Fall finds the special occasion category
Fall is a great time of year for wine consumers and wine retailers. The combination of fall releases and our distributor partners working hard on their portfolios results in us finding many new things to put on our shelves. And if it is on our shelves it is available for your consuming pleasure. This week we will focus on the higher end items for smaller gatherings and special occasions. Stay tuned next week for the new finds that are more “gently priced”.
SPEEDING: School zone bozos
Does anyone realize what the speed limits are in school zones? Well, on this last Friday morning around 7:30, a driver apparently couldn’t care less. As I pulled out of my real estate office heading east, the flashing yellow lights on Highway 53 were on and in full display, but this pickup driver with Washington plates drove right up behind me at a rather high rate of speed, much more than the 25 mph posted speed limit. Someone would have to be blind not to see these bright yellow lights flashing!

Oct. 12, 2004, was a Tuesday, a beautiful bonus summer-like blue sky sunshiny autumn day. It was a day I will never forget — not the sunshine or the sounds or the words that came out of a doctor’s mouth as I stood alone in the “quiet room” at Kootenai Medical Center waiting for my mother to arrive. “We tried to resuscitate him but he was already gone.”

PRESS: Leaning wrong way
In this primarily conservative area, one would think it would support a more conservative newspaper, but instead it has a liberal paper. The Coeur d’Alene Press has continually printed negative articles or subtly negative articles about Donald Trump, while nothing negative can be found for Hillary’s irresponsible and criminal behavior. The Coeur d’Alene Press then hires a publisher from liberal California. The area needs a newspaper which reflects the political and social leanings of its citizens, not one trying to indoctrinate and change readers to the goals of globalists.

MILAN: For the children
Kristi Milan supports quality public education — pre-K through post secondary — and, when elected Legislative District 4 Senator, she will continue her fight for all of Idaho’s children. This commitment has been strengthened both through the academic successes or her children educated right here in Coeur d’Alene schools, and through her 17 years of teaching in Kootenai County public schools.
HEARN: Experience here counts
Rumors have been circulating that Paul Amador, candidate for Legislative Seat 4A, only recently registered as a Republican. It was therefore not surprising when Amador acknowledged that until recently he was registered as an Independent. He also moved to Idaho recently and has never held elective office. How well can a newcomer to Idaho and the Republican Party represent Coeur d’Alene in the Legislature? How independent can he be to represent our interests when he is just learning about Idaho? When he tries to demonstrate he is a good Republican to skeptical party leaders at home and in Boise?

Idaho's Constitution doesn't need HJR 5
Vote NO! on HJR 5. Two years ago, Idahoans rejected HJR 2. Idaho voters properly rejected the Legislature’s attempt to permanently invade Executive discretion and prohibit Judicial oversight of the relationship between the Executive and Legislative branches of government within rulemaking. This year, voters are being presented with virtually an identical constitutional amendment, HJR 5. I hope you will join me in agreeing that this amendment should once again be rejected. HJR 5 ignores the will of the people as expressed just two years ago. More importantly, HJR 5 threatens to permanently invade the Executive and Judicial Branches of Idaho’s government, disrupting the balance and separation of powers contemplated by Idaho’s founders. HJR 5 also permanently encourages lobbyists to influence Idaho’s policymakers at virtually every level of state government.

FACTS: Tell whole story
It is disgusting that you import an article in the world/nation section of your paper and do not fact check the stories before printing them in your paper. On page three of The Press of Oct. 4, an unknown writer wrote “Trump Suggests vets with PTSD are weak.” After the last quote by Donald Trump which ended with “And they are horror stories. They see events that you couldn’t see in a movie, nobody would believe it.” What the writer did not write was the continuation of the answer to the Marine Staff Sargent’s question, if Mr. Trump would get spiritual help and other help for these veterans. Mr. Trump said, “Yes I would. He continued, “No, we need a mental health help and medical. It is one of the things that is least addressed and it is one of the things that I hear most about when I go and talk to the veterans, so we are going to have a robust, very robust level of performance having to do with mental health. We are losing so many great people that can be taken care of if they have proper care.” After Mr. Trump said a few words about the suicides and mental health, the veterans and retired military people there were pleased with what he said. He received applause from the audience. The entire speech is on YouTube under Latinos Support Trump, Full Speech: Donald Trump Speaks to Veterans in Herndon, Va.

DEBATES: Locals left out
In this important election season debates are useful ways for people to learn the issues and observe the candidates. Fog of the brain
Have you ever watched the fog roll off a lake? It isn't clear one moment and thick the next. It comes in slowly, in little wisps. At first, vision is slightly hazy, but you can see for long distances. It gradually flows over you, just a little thicker, a little heavier, a little cooler, until you realize you can't see very far at all. "Brain Fog" isn't a lot different. Rarely is your brain — your memory, your ability to recall words, the sharpness of thought — there one day and gone the next. It starts in little wisps, becoming murkier, gradually disappearing, until the time comes that it becomes so problematic that you seek help to resolve it.

The supposedly nonpartisan, tax exempt Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD), which is to provide the best educational information to voters, and is controlled by Democrats and Republicans, has decided the American people will only be permitted to see Clinton and Trump debate, despite the fact the Libertarian ticket of Johnson and Weld will be on all 50 state ballots also.

TRUMP: Enough Hitler references
Yet another letter detailing the rise of Hitler, starting with the youth, a “veiled” inference to Donald Trump’s popularity and electability. If I remember correctly, a year ago, people were clamoring for an end to Washington politics and the status quo and looking for someone “from outside politics” to step up and bring some different solutions to what’s been taking place for so long. I noticed how, almost to a “man,” the Washington elected elite sounded the alarm against Trump. Upset the apple cart? He certainly has.

KOHLES: True public servant
Richard Kohles recently spoke to a group of voters about the need to talk across party lines. He will focus on KINDNESS. It may sound naïve to some, but those of us who have known Richard, his wife Jean and his family for some time know that he means it and will develop KINDNESS in his campaign. He spent 12 years in the seminary studying such concepts as KINDNESS and treating others as you would like to be treated. He means it, and he lives by it.

AMADOR: Trust his decisions
Working 40 years as a Rehabilitation Specialist in North Idaho and serving on the Heritage Health, Union Gospel Mission, and Tesh Boards, I realize more and more families in Idaho are struggling with medical costs. Paul Amador, Republican candidate for the Idaho legislature, is the one candidate I trust to make the best decisions to address our medical care issues in Idaho. I have known Dr. Amador for many years and he is both compassionate and rational in his decision making process. He understands that although we have a strong moral obligation to support those who are in need in our community, we must also focus on providing the most effective and fiscally responsible solutions to these issues. I know that he is supportive of solutions like the recently opened mental health crisis center because it serves a very important need in our community and reduces the impact on our law enforcement and emergency medical fac! ilities, which ultimately saves taxpayer money. I encourage you to vote for our future on November 8. Vote for Republican Paul Amador for Idaho House Seat 4B. He is the best choice to represent us on healthcare issues.

Iris blooms in the fall? You bet!
My Garden Path
Yes, it is possible to enjoy nice big iris blooms in the fall. Pictured is one of my “twice blooming” iris varieties called Immortality. They bloom first thing in the spring and then again in the fall. These bloomed the entire month of September this year. The only catch is when we experience an early cold spell. Then these irises can have their buds frozen.

School board drops the ball
First and foremost I would like to thank the Coeur d’Alene School District Board of Trustees for their service. Their job is not an easy one and in many instances they are on one side or the other of many controversial and emotional decisions. It is easy for us outsiders to say “that comes with the territory” but for them it is very hard to manage internally when their passion is to move the district forward in a positive direction. I get that.
