POLITICS: A fine mess
While going through some papers on my desk I came across this list that a friend of mine wrote. He is an educated man, a retired attorney. The list really hit home with me. Americans need to ask themselves how did this happen and how do we correct our system of government - not barricade ourselves behind the various politicians and candidates who will only perpetuate and exacerbate the problems that are evident to any honest observer. It was written over 17 years ago. It has only gotten worse. Here’s the list:
1. Most politicians care more about their careers than doing the right thing.
2. There are two levels of justice in America; one for the powerful and: one for the ordinary citizen.
3. Democrats will sell their souls for a criminal.
4. Republicans will sell out their colleagues for their own political security.
5. The Constitution’s definition of high crimes and misdemeanors must not include perjury and obstruction of justice. What should we do with those who are already in prison for doing these things?
6. Republicans can’t lead.
7. Democrats only know how to follow.
8. Economic prosperity is more meaningful in America than honesty, integrity, fidelity and character.
9. Respect for law and our legal system is as prevalent as the eight track tape player.
10. Most politicians are no longer concerned with what they can do for America, but they are vitally concerned about what they need to do for themselves.
11. Teaching moral values to children has just gotten a lot harder.
12. Words and actions are not as important as the spin that is put on them.
13. Public opinion polls have replaced common sense.
14. Principle must yield to agenda.
15. If one lie doesn’t work, keep on lying and eventually the truth will be so blurred everything will work out just fine.
