TAX HIKES: Hard on seniors

| October 30, 2016 9:00 PM

As a retired old coot, I have the opportunity to ponder things. Some of those things are how our seniors on fixed incomes are supposed to keep up with property taxes that keep on rising. They are endlessly hit by the city, county and schools with property taxes. Folks that have worked hard, paid off mortgages and eventually retired are told that it’s only “x” amount of dollars per assessment and that it’s just a little here and there.

They have voted down a new jail three times and the commissioners miraculously have found surplus money for this project. The school board, instead of suing the state for not funding education that is constitutionally mandated, keeps coming at them with new levies.

These are just a few of the matters that an old guy ponders. I will admit, though, there is a bright spot on the horizon. I just read that magnanimous Avista is going to lower our electric bills by 30 cents a month.
