PREP VOLLEYBALL: Lumberjacks sweep way back to state
GENESEE — The St. Maries Lumberjacks traveled to Genesee with the simple goal of not letting either Orofino or Grangeville win a set against them in the 2A District 1-2 tournament on Tuesday.
Mission accomplished.
Kaylee Auer had seven kills, four blocks and three aces for the Lumberjacks — the tournament’s top seed — in a 25-16, 25-21, 25-21 win against second-seeded Grangeville to advance to the state tournament starting next Friday at Idaho Falls High.
It is the Lumberjacks’ second straight district title.
“The girls just came together and were determined not to let them take a game against us,” first-year St. Maries coach Rachele Asbury said. “The girls had much better passes and moved the ball around really well. It was just a good team effort.”
Devyn Wilson had 10 kills, Kelsey Auer 25 assists and McKenna Borgman seven digs for St. Maries (16-14), which faces the winner of a play-in match between the District 5 runner-up and District 6 runner-up next Friday at 10 a.m. PDT.
Earlier, Wilson had 15 kills, Kelsey Auer 31 assists, Borgman seven digs, Lauryn Hill three aces and Kaci Haeg two blocks in the Lumberjacks 25-12, 25-16, 27-25 win against third seed Orofino.
Grangeville advances to a play-in match on Saturday against the third-place team from District 3 (Boise area) at Highland High in Craigmont.

Ashlyn Mallet had four aces, Kenzie Dean seven kills for Timberlake (19-10), which faces second-seeded Bonners Ferry in the championship match on Thursday.
“I like how we served the ball tonight,” Timberlake coach Michelle Garwood said. “Ashlyn and McKeeley (Tonkin) did a good job of serving aggressively and placing the ball really well. Matraca did a good job as always moving the ball around. It was a great performance all-around.”
