FULCHER: Glad he opposes Idaho Core
Yes, you are correct. Russ Fulcher changed his mind on Common Core. Like most of us, Senator Fulcher did not know much about Common Core when, in 2011 as a member of the Senate Education Committee, he voted for a rule supporting the Common Core standards in math and English language arts.

Shortcuts
Owning a retail wine shop, most of our evenings, save for when we have events like tastings and dinners, are pretty quiet. We make dinner at home most times and of course we have some wine but they are, in short, quiet. At times I contemplate while making dinner, "Maybe I will skip that step tonight, just take a shortcut." The problem is with food preparation when you shortcut steps, it doesn't come out quite the same. Flavors might not be as complex and coherent, the tenderness might not be quite what it could be, textures and aromas could be a bit off.

NONINI: Always keeps his word
As a trustee on the Post Falls School Board, I have been particularly interested in where the candidates stand on educational issues. I have attended a number of candidate forums over the past month and have learned who is in favor of Common Core, and who feels that there are inherent problems with this new federal program.
Tooth care 'to-do' list
What is on your to-do list for today, this month, this year? No matter your age, there should be some 'to-do's' in the back of your mind to keep your teeth healthy for many years to come. On a weekly basis, I see people who have waited too long to add their pearly whites to their mental to-do list. It is my personal goal to never have a patient approach me and say, "Dr. Hazard, you never told me..." Here is a quick go-to list for every stage of life.
Iconic business celebrates milestone
The oldest continuously operating business in Post Falls is celebrating its 80th anniversary on Saturday. Curtis Chase opened The Slab Inn in 1934, not long after the end of Prohibition, when Post Falls' population was numbered in the hundreds, not thousands.
Succeeding with the use of your creative thinking
Imagine it is an incredibly stormy night, the wind howling, the temperatures dropping, the rain and sleet coming in torrents as the sky darkens more with the passing of each hour. As you edge your way home from a long day, cozy and dry in your new two-seater sports car with the radio softly playing, you find yourself stopped at a red light next to a bus stop. Glad to have a raincoat with you, you glance to your right and see three people sitting on a bench, waiting for the next bus. Each appears soaked, shivering and without much protection from the wind and cold rain hitting them.

Shoulder dislocation
Because the shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body and has such a wide range of motion, it is more likely to dislocate than any other joint in the body. Dislocations are among the most common traumatic injuries affecting the shoulder. Athletes, non-athletes, children, and adults can all dislocate their shoulders. They can occur during contact sports and everyday accidents, such as falls.
SHOSHONE: Dispute is hurting citizens
In past years I have attended any number of annual budget hearings because I am concerned that our local tax districts (county, city, schools, water, sewer, etc.) are providing quality goods and services for the tax dollars that we, the citizens and taxpayers of this great republic, provide. I do this because I have always believed that, at least on a local level, I can effect change. I must now admit that I was naive to believe that, even at a local level, our elected officials care about any public input on any matter.

Bored in school
My ears perk as I hear a 17-year-old girl say, "It was boring. That's why I begged my mom to homeschool me," speaking to her same-aged boyfriend. Having time to kill as my take-and-bake pizza is being made, I slide across the room and sit on the bench next to the couple to eavesdrop on their conversation.
CORONER: Keene is most qualified
I am voting for Dr. Warren Keene for coroner on May 20. In the Dec. 1, 2012, edition of the Coeur d’Alene Press, the beginnings of the coroner’s office budget overrun were brought to public light. The Kootenai County commissioners were reported to be considering an internal audit of the county coroner’s department, since the coroner had exceeded her department’s budget for the second consecutive year. My understanding is with that included and today’s budget overage, the office is over 50 percent what it was four years ago. Those are my tax dollars being wasted.

SAILORS: Dinged by verbal broadside
On April 18 Russell DiBiase wrote a letter regarding Americans paying more taxes. He referred to the way the federal government spends money like “drunken sailors.” During all our wars, sailors gave their lives to protect Americans including Mr. DiBiase, and I think that he owes an apology to all sailors — past, present and future.
GUNS: Amendment words to fight over
There is a very well written discussion on the Second Amendment in Wikipedia. The Second Amendment states, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”
The heart matters
Sometimes you have one of those weeks where it just seems you hear such similar stories from so many people that you wonder what it all means. This last week was one of those weeks. It seemed that every time I turned around, I was talking to someone about issues of the heart - and I mean their actual heart. Some have hearts that have electrophysiology issues, others have hearts that have problems with the heart muscle, and still others have issues with blockage of the important arteries to the heart.

Opinion: What if we all donated on one day?
If there’s one thing that unites the many diverse areas of Idaho, it is a strong sense of community and a pervasive spirit of generosity. Our notable quality of life is attributable, in no small part, to the fact that we in Idaho tend to look out for one another. Last May, Idahoans made history, and a big difference, in donating nearly $600,000 to more than 500 nonprofit causes in a 24-hour period. We’re counting on that same spirit of generosity once again this year, when we celebrate Idaho Gives on Thursday, May 1.

My phone rang. It was the Wells Fargo branch at the corner of 95 and Ironwood. Someone had found my card outside Staples and turned it in to the bank.

AUDIT: Not what GOP is doing
The use of the term “audit” in Thursday’s article “Local GOP to Audit Records” should have a disclaimer. By touting the process as it is going to be done by the two certified public accountants specifically named (one current, one retired), your article implies that this will be an audit — noun here, not verb as in the article title — as most would understand by professional accounting standards. Independence appears to be an issue, if not in fact then definitely by appearance, because “they seem to represent the two factions in the party.” The financial records can be audited but should be done by an independent CPA who has no material affiliation with the organization.

It is true with any occupation that, as your experience grows, your communication style changes. In many occupations, acronyms are used as words and although peers understand what you mean, no one else does. Realtors are no different. Someone eavesdropping on a meeting of agents discussing a transaction would quickly become lost as they tried to interpret the acronyms bandied about in Realtor-speak. Military getting better weapons
The April edition of the American Legion magazine had a couple of news articles worthy of passing along. In Air Force news, 72 Lockheed Martin F-35A fighters will be delivered to Hill Air Force base in Utah. The first National Guard unit to fly them is out of Burlington International Airport in Vermont and will receive 18. There are three versions of the F-35 Lightning II. The conventional F-35A is a takeoff and landing model, with the F-35B being a short take-off and vertical-landing variant. The F-35C is carrier-based. The "Lightning" namesake is the dual engine Lockheed P-38 introduced in 1941 and retired in 1965, primarily used in the Pacific Theater during World War II. It was the primary fighter until appearance of the P-51 Mustang toward the end of the war. P-38's twin Allison V-1710 engines propelled the craft to 443 mph. It was the only American fighter to be produced during America's involvement in the war from Pearl Harbor to Victory over Japan. The stealth F-35 is powered by the Pratt & Whitney 135 for a max speed of 1199 mph, and is the smaller sibling of the twin-engine F-22 Raptor.

GAME: Ruined by an f-bomb
On Monday I attended the Post Falls versus Coeur d’Alene varsity baseball game. I sat past the third base dugout to watch the game. In the sixth inning, Coeur d’Alene had back-to-back home runs. As the young man from Coeur d’Alene was running past second base on his victory trot, he yelled something like “GO F@#$ING BALL.” I was shocked and asked for confirmation of what I thought I heard from a Post Falls player who was warming up near me. He confirmed what I heard. As the Coeur d’Alene player rounded third base toward home, the umpire correctly indicated that he would be removed from the game. The Coeur d’Alene coach argued and in the end, I am not sure if he was removed from the game or not.

BIBLE: Its purpose differs from science
I read Dale Hedman’s letter and would now like to ask him this: Yes, an apple seed will grow an apple tree. But it may not grow a Red Delicious, Granny Smith, or even a Gala Apple. Why is that? Because the people who bred any of the above apples for different eating characteristics selectively bred these apples for the kind of characteristics that they desired. And that was through hybridization (which creates a form of mutation), as well as grafting to root stock. It actually wouldn’t take much to read up on this, any horticultural magazine would do. That being said, to produce these diverse characteristics among apples would require the science of biology, which Mr. Hedman doesn’t seem to want to accept. Has he ever picked up a gardening catalog, where the requirements for specific types of sweet corn is that they must be kept isolated from any other variety of corn? Well, the same selective breeding process went into the development of this kind of corn. Further, for it to “breed true,” with the specific eating characteristics advertised, it requires genetic isolation. An applied use of Darwin’s theory in agriculture.

STEWART: Clarifies role in 271 debate
There appears to be both confusion and misunderstanding regarding my conversation some weeks ago at the U.S. Post Office when approached by School Board 271 Board Chairman Tom Hearn. I shared with him the idea that one should always research in-depth any issue prior to a public hearing. I did not recommend that the people’s business should be done in private. I gave him the example of the process we used regarding last year’s adoption of the city of Coeur d’Alene anti-discrimination ordinance.

RANKING: Press misses full story
The front-page headline, “We’re No. 5,” in the April 18 edition of the Coeur d’Alene Press was misleading. The “study” referred to in this article was produced by a private organization, the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), with a very specific legislative agenda. This “study” is an attempt to obscure the fact that Idaho sits at No. 50 in most standards that evaluate state commitment to public education and 50th in median income. Meanwhile we are No. 1 in the percentage of people working for minimum wage.

Bonnie Marie Beckwith Stonebraker, 59
Bonnie Marie Beckwith Stonebraker, October 30, 1954 - March 9, 2014, was born in Great Barrington, Mass., to Paul Francis Beckwith and Caroline Rose Stevenson Beckwith.

Dennis Duncan, 56
Dennis Duncan, who passed away recently at the age of 56, made his mark in life not just in those fields of wheat, barley and lentils but in the hearts of his loved ones and friends in Fairfield and beyond. Born in Spokane, WA July 22, 1957 just minutes ahead of his fraternal twin brother Dave, Dennis grew up helping his father, Bill on the farm just east of Fairlield, WA. In high school, Dennis met his future wife Terry. They later married and had 3 sons: Denny, Shane and Kyle. Their lives together spanned over 4 decades. After graduating from high school in Plummer, he attended Spokane Community College majoring in Diesel Mechanics. Dennis never seemed to have much of a dilemma about what his life would be-it would be farming. He was in his element in the world of early starts and long days regulated by the changing of the seasons. Dennis and Bill worked together along with his twin Dave and other brother Randy for a few years. Dennis slowly gained more land and branched out on his own. With time, hard work, integrity and the help and support of Terry and their boys, Dennis became a successful farmer. In March of 2012 a cancer diagnosis triggered a shift of priority. Family and pursuing his desire to travel became forefront. Dennis, Terry and the family traveled to Hawaii in January of 2013 for a wonderful and relaxing getaway. Thailand became a favorite destination of his. He journeyed there many times to visit his friend, George and to go scuba diving in the Andaman Sea off the South East coast, an activity that he became passionate about after gaining certification here in Coeur D'Alene..

Vegetarian, vegan or meat eater: Which is correct?
For 40 years, I have attended seminars where the speaker said, "You will never get a vegetarian/vegan completely well." It used to make me mad because I was a vegetarian and was healthier than I had ever been. But then again, for the first 19 years of my life I subsisted on a diet of Hamburger Helper, TV dinners and Jell-O, so the change to vegetarian eating - whole grains and vegetables - was a drastic improvement. Even though I was an expert in vegetarian eating, after 21 years it caught up with me. I started getting really ill. My protein levels were plummeting, and the more protein I ate, the worse I got. Finally after some tests, we discovered I had become allergic to all the vegetarian sources of protein! I was in a serious quandary - my kids were raised vegetarian, my friends were all vegetarian, I encouraged vegetarianism in my practice - my whole life was wrapped up in it!

Wanted: Political unity
Kellie Palm has written many columns in the Cd'A Press with deprecatory inferences concerning the Kootenai County Republican Central Committee. It has always been my belief that in order to maintain unity within a political party, difference in opinion should be handled maturely in private debate rather than running to the public forum, which doesn't allow proper exchange of ideas. After repeated columns, however, where she has expressed misplaced and unfounded, disparaging comments concerning the Republican Central Committee and specific members of the committee, I felt it necessary to respond in the same forum. Hopefully, Republicans in the county who desire clarity and a differing opinion will benefit from this response.

Research casts doubt on global warming benefits of biofuels made with cornfield waste
Biofuels made from the leftovers of harvested corn plants are worse than gasoline for global warming in the short term, a study shows, challenging the Obama administration's conclusions that they are a much cleaner oil alternative and will help combat climate change.

The making of a great palate
We have all tasted with folks who have great palates. You know the ones. They can identify every nuance in the flavor and depth of wine as they taste. When we go to dinner with them, they pick wines that they know they will like, but also appeal to their guests' tastes. Much of this is natural talent, but the big question for wine consumers is, is there a way to develop those skills? A way to take our natural aromatic talent and move beyond its limitations to enhance our wine experience?

Getting chicky with chickpeas
Chickpeas (garbanzo beans) are a legume and a native to one of the healthiest diets, the Mediterranean diet. The earliest chickpeas were found 7,500 years ago in Turkey, so they are considered an old and traditional food. Chickpeas are the main ingredient of hummus, which is made of mashed chickpeas mixed with oils and spices. Hummus is a popular appetizer in the Middle East and Mediterranean region and has become increasingly popular as a dip in the U.S., with retail sales increasing to $250 million in 2013. This is up from $192 million in 2007 and just $5 million in 1997.

Encouraging creative differences
There's often more than one right answer
A long time ago there lived an old farmer who had three sons. As he grew older and more frail, he knew it was time to pass along the farm to one of his sons, for it was not large enough to support all three of them. But how to decide which son, for he loved all equally became a concern. Then he had an idea and called all three sons into his bedroom.

Shop local, buy local
Invest in your own community. Local businesses are owned by people who live in this community; they are less likely to leave, and more invested in the future of the community and the quality of service that goes along with the purchase. Buying local from the small business owner is what makes our town a "hometown."
EVOLUTION: The discussion evolves
I would like to congratulate Chris Major on his editorial rebuttal of my earlier letter. He is correct in his observation that evolution is in essence based on a religious belief rather than on scientific facts. I was actually trying to illustrate this truth using a tongue-in-cheek methodology. I believe that all significant points of the evolutionary theory require the same leap of faith to which I referred, whether it is the appearance of an eye, the production of any cellular components from inorganic matter, or the change from one family of species to another.

Cd'A: Of parks and puzzling priorities
Manicured sidewalks blend into perfectly spaced trees. The famous Centennial Trail cleverly winds around over-priced shops and restaurants for bicyclists and connoisseurs of northwestern scenery. DEE: Child still not home
As of today, Dee has been incarcerated for 30 days. Although this may not include iron bars, it amounts to the same. Dee is not allowed to return to her home. Worse yet, she is forbidden visitation by the only people in her life she has ever known to provide love and kindness: Her mother, her extended family, her friends. She is not even allowed possession of her favorite toys. Still.
Interest rates dip slightly
Interest for 30-year mortgages dipped last week to equal the lowest in six weeks. These lower rates not only encourage those looking for homes, but have caused refinancing applications to increase as well. While applications for new mortgages increased 1.3 percent, refinancing applications increased 6.9 percent over the previous week according to the Mortgage Bankers Association. Freddie Mac reports that the average rate for a 30-year fixed loan last week was 4.27 percent, down from 4.34 percent the prior week. Still, that rate is .86 percent higher than last year at this time.

These scams won't likely end with the filing season, so the IRS urges everyone to remain on guard.

What's worse than Obamacare? Repealing it
The Affordable Care Act falls far short of meeting its intended goal of lowering health care cost and bringing the uninsured into the health care system. There is no doubt that something needs to be done. But to repeal the health care law would leave us in a much worse situation. Before you once again urge your elected officials to repeal Obamacare, there are some things you need to understand about our health care system.

LGBT: Busted in the bathroom
Gary Finney — I can’t believe you found us out. The LGBT community is only pretending to want equal rights and nondiscrimination in public arenas. That’s the front, of course. But really, it’s all about the bathrooms. The secret agenda is: Gaining access to all bathrooms, all the time.
BOARD: Extend protection to all
It is my hope that the Coeur d’Alene Board of Trustees will consider revising its non-discrimination language to include the LGBT community in its protections. Some people have very strong reservations about lifestyle choices and I can understand their discomfort. We cannot all have the same attitudes and beliefs, and this can be unsettling. However we feel about other people, we must start from a place of compassion for the rights of all people. From there, we can work to share our views if they are different.

UIDAHO: Say yes to fee increase
Increases, increases, increases — college tuition and fee rates are going up; no one can argue that. In the last 10 years, tuition has nearly doubled at the University of Idaho, and no student is happy to foot this bill. Certainly, no one wants to keep paying more and more for his/her education. Yet this year, many of my frustrations and concerns are being addressed. This year, I know that my tuition increase will help fund a tangible and worthwhile purpose. This year, for only the third time since 2008, salaries will increase for our faculty and staff; funded by a student tuition increase.

Hop aboard for stagecoach stories
Every Sunday, The Press has an area history lesson researched and written by Kootenai County Historical Preservation Commissioner Syd Albright, and a recent one detailing settlement and stage coaching routes here in the Northwest. The most famous stage line, and the one most everyone has heard about, is Wells Fargo & Co., but at one time the Overland Stage Line, owned and operated by Ben Holladay, covered more miles, hauled more freight and made more money than Wells Fargo & Overland Stage Line.

Hunting down the dreaded stinging wasps
Over the weekend, I took the advice of Maureen Dolan and put out a wasp trap. She said if you can trap a queen or two before they lay their eggs, it just may make a difference in the ability to enjoy being outdoors in the yard this summer. I don't think much about flying insects this time of year since they're not noticeable but thought I'd give it a try.

Idaho's rising star
In 1998. there were 13 wineries and about 800 acres of wine grapes grown in Idaho. By 2012, we had 50 wineries and twice the acreage planted to wine grapes. Still small by most any standard, but it shows how well-regarded the appellations of the Snake River Valley and our home state winemakers are.

POLITICS: Locals think they're feds
Based on their literature and campaign slogans, one would think that our cadre of local GOP candidates are actually running for Congress instead of the state house. Their obsession with Obamacare is based on the assumption that a state legislator can change it, or that the mere mention of the term guarantees them angry votes. That’s wrong, either way. I’m not pleased with the Affordable Care Act, but it’s the law. I would prefer candidates who are willing to govern instead of those who are better fit to be taking pot shots on a radio talk show, ranting on a blog, or screaming into a Tea Party microphone.

COUNCIL: Missed historic opportunity
In 1984 I bought two rundown cottages in the Fort Grounds as a home and investment. I have remodeled, reroofed, added on and repaired those houses for 30 years and have a very nice historic 1906 home. These homes are not large, and the economic reality in the Fort Grounds is that this house and its neighbor are scrapers. They will be replaced with lot line to lot line structures, maybe attractive, maybe not.

I read “Casino poker: Legal or not?” posted March 29. Getting ready for Diamond Cup 2014
The 2013 Diamond Cup was an awesome family event. The 2014 event promises to be equally so. As evidence of the family nature of the event, I observed three generations of a Spokane family watching the races return to the Lake City after a 44-year break. The grandfather witnessed the races in the late '60s when they were watched from Tubbs Hill. This time, he took his son and his grandson. The grandson was beside himself as he watched the thunder boats at speeds approaching 180 mph on a 2-mile course that was visible for all the spectators. The father remarked that Coeur d'Alene was even better than the Tri-Cities races.

POLITICS: Sabotage from within
A brief comment about Dave Sheldon’s “My Turn.” As a registered Republican, and have been for more than 30 years since I became old enough to vote, I will disagree with his main assertions: Open primaries offer equally open invitations to “sabotage” the candidates entering public office, between the two main political parties. If Mr. Sheldon fears the Democrats helping to nominate a “weaker” Republican candidate during the primary season in order to beat that same politician in the general election, the same argument could equally apply to Republicans crossing over and doing the same thing. Didn’t Mr. Larry Spencer change his party affiliation recently? Couldn’t the Democrats equally argue that Mr. Spencer did so in order to “sabotage” other Democratic political candidates for public office? I’d say so.

DEE: It's all about her best interests
Failing our foster children has been ongoing for decades. Now is the time to stop it. The injustice in the case of Dee being removed from the only home she has ever known is not just heartbreaking, it’s criminal. Why isn’t this considered abuse by the IDHW? Dee will be traumatized to her very core as the Child Specialist testified. Who gives IDHW the power to go beyond the judge in this case’s ruling? Why does IDHW have this power? There is no person on the face of this Earth who would agree that this child’s “best interest” was served.

SPOOF: Found guilty of cruelty
On the front page of the Coeur d’Alene Press April 1 in Large Bold Print was an article about 3,000 jobs coming to Coeur d’Alene. I read it quickly and was excited that a mattress manufacturer was moving here. I thought of people I knew who had lost their jobs and my heart was pounding. I read the article again and knew something was wrong; the pay was $2,500/week and the benefits were off the wall. You would be required to test mattresses and rather sleep than work. I didn’t find this humorous. We have many people unemployed and I can imagine how excited some people may have gotten when they saw this, and the disappointment when they figured out it was a joke.

SPOOF: 'Journalistic sewage' on front page
The article — albeit an April Fools’ joke — on Monday’s font page of The Press announcing 3,000 new jobs for Coeur d’Alene has to be one of the most cruel and insensitive pieces of journalistic garbage I’ve had the displeasure of reading. While intended to be humorous, it rose only to the level of journalistic sewage — on a par with the scurrilous content so often found in supermarket tabloids like the Star and National Enquirer.

Spring gardening
I slowly crack open my left eye early Saturday morning hoping to discover bright sun streaming through my bedroom window. Unsure of the result, I raise my head to look at the alarm which reads 5:34 a.m. in blaringly bright red numbers. Too early for the sun to declare the day's options. I close my eyes in hope of continuing the race between Michael Caine in his Aston Martin and me in my Mini Cooper borrowed for my dream from the 1969 movie, "The Italian Job," that I fell asleep to the night before.

Spring release is upon us and spring weather is hopefully not far behind. This time of year, we get to taste many new things as our distributors bring around all of the newly released wines. Here are some of the things we are enjoying the most.
Running and lower back pain
Running is an activity that involves repetitive stress and impact, sometimes for a long duration. People who have an underlying lower back problem can find running or jogging makes their pain worse or leads to additional types of pain, such as sciatica (leg pain, weakness, or numbness).

The most common complaints that patients have are, "I am tired. I have no energy. I wake up tired." Fatigue is becoming the number one reason people seek medical care. Unfortunately, today's urgent care-based medicine is not equipped to diagnose nor understand the root cause of fatigue. Fatigue can be the result of hormone imbalance, blood issues, inflammation, the inability of the body to handle stress, structural issues, dietary choices, occult infections or dysbiosis in the intestinal track, to name just a few.

Looking good!
I grew up on the East coast, in Maryland, on the Mason Dixon line. We lived on the border of the southern life, and the traditions were strong. No white shoes or white pants before Easter. No open-toed shoes before the heat of the summer. Only dresses with hats, gloves and elegant shoes for Easter Sunday church. No sweatpants to go to the store. And certainly, you never called a boy unless he called you first.

DEE: May the bond be unbroken
In response to Child: Where she really belongs. I was a foster parent for more than 35 years with 285 children passing through my home. It doesn’t take a degree of any sort to know the bond that is created in the very first years of life. We also know when that bond is broken a child can have attachment issues that can last a lifetime. Come on, wake up and smell the coffee. This is not in the best interest of any child. This family relative, if they had any interest in this child, should have stepped up to the plate long ago and not waited five years. Now this little one is in a loving home for five years and your going to take her and place her with another family. This makes absolutely no sense at all. I have to say my daughter who we adopted 24 years ago now has a master’s in social work. How devastating if she was placed with a family relative after five years of being with us. Please, Idaho Health and Welfare, look at what REALLY is in the best interest of this little girl!
FUHL: Spoof wasn't funny
I’m guessing the “Here come 3,000 jobs” story on the front page of the paper is a April Fools' joke. It says the story is continued on page A9; there is no page A9. I don’t see the humor in the story. As bad as the economy is up here with no really large companies moving to the area employing large amounts of people, it’s a pretty sad story. Unless you count Center Partners and another one or two, there is nothing up here.

Healthy teeth into your golden years
When I purchased Heartwood Dental, the average age of my patients was over 65 years old. Since then, we have become a lot more diverse in our patient pool, but I have seen and treated a lot of the most experienced members of our community. I have noticed that many people don't know what to expect with their dental health as they grow older. While it is obvious that each person ages differently, there are a few trends that dentists see that can offer insight and suggestions for people who are interested in chewing, biting, and smiling well into their golden years.
