COLUMN: A big vote for snail mail
I read Sholeh Patrick’s column in the Coeur d’Alene Press and I couldn’t agree more. Allow me to tell you my story about “snail mail.”
A dear friend of mine disclosed during a telephone call that his terminally ill sister looked forward to a weekly call from a friend so much that she prolonged her life. The days when she felt she just couldn’t go on, she did because she was expecting that call.
I have taken this to heart and weekly I write “snail mail” letters to two cancer patients, with no expectation of any reply, just to encourage them in their fight and to give them something to look forward to. I feel there is no better gift than to know that someone out there is thinking of you and praying for you during one of the roughest times in your life. It is sincere, it is personal and it is important!
While enduring treatment for cancer there is plenty of chemo, radiation, nausea and worry. My goal is to gift these very special people with something to look forward to … a personal, handwritten, encouraging letter. Trust me, it makes their lives just a little better.
