Sutton, Nyquist homer as Vikings down Trojans

BASEBALL

COEUR d'ALENE - Sean Sutton hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning and Nick Nyquist hit a solo shot in the third for the Coeur d'Alene Vikings, who beat the Post Falls Trojans 12-2 in six innings of a 5A Inland Empire League game on Wednesday at Ted Page Field.

The game, previously scheduled for Post Falls, was moved to Coeur d'Alene due to wet conditions making the field unplayable in Post Falls.

Kolby DeHaas had three RBIs for Coeur d'Alene (11-4, 4-1 5A IEL), which hosts Lake City in a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

Treavor Hammell had three hits, including a solo home run in the third inning for Post Falls (8-6, 0-4), which travels to Lewiston on Saturday for a doubleheader.

POST FALLS - Coeur d'Alene pitcher Breana Burke threw her second no-hitter of the season, striking out 11 and walking none in the first game of the Vikings' 5A Inland Empire League sweep of the Trojans.

"She threw real well," Post Falls coach Jack Foster said. "Coeur d'Alene hit the heck out of the ball, they hit the gaps and we didn't make a whole lot of mistakes."

Zoe Clark blasted two home runs in the first game for Coeur d'Alene (10-2, 5-0 5A IEL).

In the second game, Kylie Smith and Sydni Parker were both 4 for 4 and scored five runs for the Vikings. Abby Howard went 4 for 5 with five RBI.

Carlin Rosetti was 2 for 2 with an RBI in the second game for Post Falls (0-9, 0-4). Katie McDermott had an RBI double in the first inning and Kyra Haskew had an RBI double in the fourth inning.

Both teams play at home today in nonleague action, as Coeur d'Alene hosts Lakeland, while Post Falls plays against Sandpoint.

BONNERS FERRY - Anna Gardom had wins in the 100- and 200-meter dash for the Timberlake girls, which swept an Intermountain League track dual with Priest River and Bonners Ferry on Tuesday night.

Timberlake beat Priest River 96-46 and Bonners Ferry 106-40 in the dual.

Ben Austin won the 300 hurdles and ran on the Timberlake's 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams as the boys also swept.

Timberlake travels to the Freeman Invitational on Friday night.

SANDPOINT - Gavin Gelhausen scored three goals to lead Lake City past Sandpoint in the North Idaho League opener for both schools at Great Northern Field.

Zach Kerzman had 13 saves and Dagon Hall had one goal and two assists for Lake City, which hosts Logos tonight at 5:30 p.m.
