2013 ends with two old Broadway favorites on top
NEW YORK - Broadway's highest grossing show in 2013 wasn't a new strutting musical or a bawdy one or even one with a big star. The crown goes to a regal but mature performer - "The Lion King," now in its 16th year. And another veteran turned heads when "Wicked" recorded Broadway's highest single-week gross ever.

Born June 30, 1930, in Reserve, Mont., to Carl and Kirstine Lyson. In 1941 the family moved to Martinez, Calif., and in 1944 they moved to Port Chicago, Calif., where Maynard began high school and met his high school sweetheart Betty Fife-Lyson at Mt. Diablo High School, graduating in 1949. The two got married in Reno, Nev., on Oct. 15, 1949. Their love for each other manifested five children, whom they loved and honored. In 1971 they migrated to Coeur d’Alene from Concord, Calif. Maynard and Betty began their new life by founding Lyson Cement Contracting in 1973, and Betty, Country Coiffure, family owned and operated businesses. Maynard retired in 1998, and his son Dan continued the business. He became very active in the community upon retiring. Most of his life was spent as a member of the Odd Fellows in which he loved and represented all that Odd Fellows stood for. The Eagles was his favorite place to go hang out with friends. He loved selling raffle tickets and promoting the Eagles. For 17 years Maynard and his “little lady” Audrey Partridge would go dancing, play scratch tickets and have fun enjoying retirement. Maynard’s passion besides Audrey was his woodwork. He had a wood shop at his son’s business, where he made beautiful creations from wood. There are people who do not even know Maynard, but will recognize him as the guy who showed you his crafts at the Eagles or approached your table to buy a raffle ticket. Maynard was admired by his family. Maynard respected his children by loving them with all his heart; the kids never felt unloved.

ITD: Megaload prospects dubious
Idaho Transportation Department’s history at Higgens Point, with a road grader and tractor on the bottom of lake, is hardly a recommendation for future success moving a megaload of refinery equipment across the same unstable ground. Randolph Hearst dismantled a castle in Europe, numbered each stone, crated it up and shipped it half a world away, to be reassembled on a mountain top in California. Considering the mitigation costs the ITD and the citizens of Idaho had to pay last time, perhaps the Hearst method would be a better route to travel. Judging from their annual reports the oil companies can afford the added expense.
MEDICATION: God bless whoever paid
I need to write about this. I was at Kmart (Dec. 20) picking up my meds. It was higher than the money I had so I was telling the pharmacist to take it back. Some lady (God sent her) came up to the cashier and paid my bill. Yes, my bill of $68. I was shocked. All I can say is God bless you. Thank you. I’m 88 years old and I can’t write too well but thank you, thank you! God bless people like you.
HOSPICE: How could it be eliminated?
As I read the Hospice Counselor’s Farewell article of 12/22/13, I was deeply saddened. I have had first-hand experience with Hospice and the loss of my mother 2 years ago. The support that was given to me at that time was priceless and continues to help in moving forward. It is hard to understand how something so important to so many could be eliminated in a blink of an eye.
GIFT CARD: Promise to pay it forward
To The Editor,
WOLVES: Idaho misses the mark
Craig White, a wildlife biologist with Idaho Department of Fish and Game, commented on Nov. 15, 2013 that “we actually had some great numbers of animals (hunted elk) coming through. Some of our best numbers in recent years and so that was exciting to see.”
TACOS: Can't stand all the stands
I cannot believe the city of Coeur d’Alene is allowing all these taco stands to be set up in nearly every business parking lot in town. Shame on the city! Our town is looking more like Tijuana every day. This would have never been allowed 40 years ago when I had MY business here. They wouldn’t even allow a flashing sign of any kind back then. Is the city that desperate for money, or are they giving these people a free ride just because they’re immigrants?
EDUCATION: How do we measure up?
I recently read an outstanding book on education, “The Smartest Kids in the World and How They Got That Way,” by Amanda Ripley. My impression from other articles I have read was that the U.S. primary and secondary education systems were in decline. To some extent this book refutes that and points out the U.S. has stayed the same while other countries have improved; some of them dramatically and rapidly.
ACCIDENT: Great care after rollover
I hope some folks in Tensed get the CDA Press as we owe their ambulance service a huge debt of gratitude, and I have no specific names to thank. My granddaughter, her one-month-old baby boy, and I were involved in a one-car rollover accident coming from Moscow just before we got to Tensed on Dec. 24.

Reflection
As we look back on 2013 we must begin with the third quarter of 2012 as our starting point. November of 2012, interest on real estate loans hit an all time low and aided our recovery as market-wise buyers realized that rates were not likely to go lower. These interest rates would hold, hovering below 3.5 percent into early 2013.

Neighborhood of the week: Tullamore
If we were in Ireland, we would know that Tullamore is a sleepy little town founded in the 18th century that came to prominence when a hot air balloon crashed into it in 1785, destroying more than a hundred homes. Or perhaps we'd know it because of the success of Tullamore Dew, a world-famous Irish whiskey distilled in the town.

Shawnee poem inspires life
Chief Tecumseh of the Shawnee Nation (1768-1813) was more than simply a tribal chief. He led the First Nations, a confederacy of Native American Tribes united against the new U.S. armies and settlers encroaching upon and taking their historical lands. But this poem isn't about that. It isn't even about valor (it appeared at the end of the movie "Act of Valor").

Do vitamins block disease? Some disappointing news
How can that laser help me?
Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), commonly known as "cold" laser, has been used worldwide for over 40 years to relieve pain, remove scars, heal wounds, regenerate nerves and solve addictions. On Jan. 17, 2002, the first U.S. LLLT company, Erchonia, received FDA clearance through clinical trial. The study took 100 patients complaining of neck and shoulder pain. Half were treated with a useless red light (placebo group) similar to that on a computer mouse or grocery check-out, and the other half received LLLT.
STORY: Labels can be hurtful
I was shocked after reading the Dec. 19 Christmas For All campaign story. The article “Family’s life is incredibly chaotic” is way off base for me. It left me sick to my stomach. How dare the person state ADHD and dyslexia are “mental disorders.” Really? On what basis is this information taken from? Have you considered the fact that YOUR paper goes to our children’s schools, and this is now seen by all?

We’ve never met Mr. and Mrs. Brill, but we commend them on their parenting skills, or maybe they were just plain lucky. They raised two daughters who are making a huge difference for so many folks here in North Idaho.

Breathe deep - Christmas is here! All of the going, doing and bustling about is done. FORWARD: Gift keeps on giving
I think that this time of year especially it is important for The Press to share stories of humanity. One day last week, a man who didn’t identify himself came into my office and handed me a $50 bill. He said that he just had to pass it along and that it was not his doing. He stated that he and his family are blessed and wanted me to apply the money to someone’s (massage) treatment that needed it.

Kids and diet - what's wrong?
There are many health professionals that are quite concerned about the diet of most kids in the U.S. The incidence of childhood diseases such as obesity, diabetes, behavioral issues, etc. is escalating. According to Dr. David Katz of the Yale Preventive Medicine Research Center in New Haven, Conn., at a nutrition conference in April 2005, "Children born in the year 2000 or later are not expected to outlive their parents." That should awaken concern in every one of us.

REALTY: Not always reality
I sat down to read the paper and came across an article about Coeur d’Alene Place and Mr. Rob Brickett. While reading, I thought to myself this really sounds like a nice place to live; I also thought that it was funny that two completely different places in the same town would have the same name. Well, there isn’t, Mr. Brickett was talking about the Coeur d’Alene Place I live in. It became apparent, at least to me, that Mr. Brickett has not driven through CDA Place in a very long time and must be fantasizing about someplace else.

VETERANS: Dems do them disservice
Senate Democrats passed a bill that will reduce retired military benefits by $6 billion over 10 years. Senate Republicans attempted to block the cuts to pensions of military retirees but their attempt failed. Sen. Jeff Sessions, Republican from Alabama, wrote a bill to undo the cuts made by the Democrats, but the Democrats blocked the bill.

Six years of perspective
The dinner party opened six years ago last week. During that time, we have seen the wine industry change much, both from the supplier side of the equation and the consumer side, as well. Mary and I cannot thank all of our customers enough for the tremendous support over these years, but our thanks would not be complete without recognizing the wineries, great local distributors, and suppliers who make our job easier and a lot of fun too. We have enjoyed working with all of our customers and wine professionals alike and can't thank you enough, and we look forward to working with even more of the wine drinkers we have yet to meet.
D.C.: Spenders, take a long hike
Control and manipulation, and more out of control spending seem to be in our Republic’s future unless Americans wake up and smell the roses, and vote out the massive spenders in our very fragile government. Which, if it weren’t for money being printed with nothing backing it, the U.S. would maybe be broke. Too many easy entitlement programs giving away billions of taxpayer dollars buy votes for more spending and controls. Where will all this spending end, if ever, or until the U.S. goes broke? Both parties are guilty of overspending, over taxation, etc.
We receive gifts at all times of the year
I remember waking up at five on Christmas morning as a 4-year-old excited to see if I made Santa's good list. Still wearing slipper-socks and pajamas unwrapped the night before, I quietly peek from my bedroom door to see my sister sitting under our Christmas tree. Waking earlier than I, she plugs in the tree lights and stares at the multicolored glass bulbs sparkling on the tree. I quietly sit next to her and am mesmerized by the twinkle of the glass bulbs that redirect their light to the shiny paper and ribbon under the evergreen. We look at each other and smile. For this memory, I am thankful.

Dec. 25 unlikely, but no matter
In a way it's apropos to write about Christmas on its eve, at supper time. That's because "Christmas," or "Christ's mass" (Christes maesse) is an old English word which referred to the Lord's Supper (i.e. the Mass - breaking and dividing of bread). But its use came much later. According to the "Handbook of Christian Feasts and Customs" the word "Christmas" was not generally used until 1038, a millennium after its namesake died.

While it truly is inspiring to see the pictures with the super-sized checks being given to organizations by their benefactors, our Realtor spirit of giving is a way of life throughout the year. Russ Porter is Chief Executive Officer of Mountain West Bank. He's a banker who personally knows the value of manual labor and a man who is reluctant to talk about his own accomplishments but is not shy about praising the work of his employees.

Neighborhood of the week: The Rocking R
Strolling along the winding streets of the Rocking R, past beautiful lodge-style homes nestled against the evergreen-covered hills that surround Hayden Lake, it's hard to imagine that not so long ago, this same land was occupied by cattle. Lots and lots of cattle.

"Mountain West Bank has always encouraged its employees to be involved in the community," said Bobbi Mehringer, Vice President Loan Servicing Manager with Mountain West Bank. She knows how important corporate relationships are to United Way. She is serving her sixth year on the United Way Board of Directors and has volunteered for more than 15 years with United Way in other areas of leadership. Mehringer enjoys working on special projects with United Way throughout the year. This enables her to see firsthand some of the areas United Way helps the most, and she shares that message with her co-workers throughout the bank.

FOOD: Rathdrum bank needs space
The Rathdrum Thrift Store and Food Bank served 500+ families in the Rathdrum, Hauser and Hayden area last year. Unfortunately, the thrift store and food bank have to share a facility. They operate from a tiny, dilapidated building where the roof is about to collapse. Even with the shed out back, the food bank barely has enough room for all the food. Their greatest wish is to have some sort of new building, but in the meantime they are making due with what they have.

I’ve been reading all the letters from people on both sides of the Obamacare issue. There’s just a lot of vitriol and (seeming) hatred in them. Is this really necessary? HEALTH: A lot of hot, green air
Were you surprised by Obama’s blatant lying about his health program? You shouldn’t have been. For years he has lied just as badly about global warming, and the results of following his policies may be as serious here as it is with Obamacare. If a person’s health insurance is canceled it can easily delay some medical procedure long enough to cost their life. However, if the EPA is allowed to tax energy high enough to be prohibitive, the lack of food or heat can also be fatal.
Megaloads need special on-ramp
HEALTH: Here's one prescription
Thank you Fiona Gressler. Your letter was refreshingly magnanimous, direct, without name calling, clear and true. The point of the Affordable Care Act, besides providing health care to all Americans, was that 10 people would pay for 10 people, rather than six people paying for 10 people. Those uninsured were being paid for by the insured and caused our (already) subsidized health-care programs to become overextended.
Holiday stress management: Biggest causes of stress, anxiety
The holidays can be a joyous and wonderful time, but there's no denying that holiday stress can sometimes creep up on even the most calm and organized among us. Holiday parties, family get-togethers and other holiday activities can all be fun, but the added demands on our time and attention can all contribute to holiday stress. And then there are the disruptions in regular schedules, travel, preparing meals and managing houseguests, and having less time for yourself and voila! You have a perfect recipe for stress and anxiety.
RAISES: Not a wise investment
On Dec. 13 in the article “Giving themselves a raise,” two greedy members of our community voted to give themselves more money instead of focusing on the needs of others around them. This is just like Congress, who every few years decide to vote on adding more to their pay also. Too much government I say.

12 days of Christmas
FA LA LA and HO HO HO, 'tis the season for great joy, right? Not stress, presents, no working out, money talks and families fussing. How should we spend this holiday season? Chiropractic for weekend warriors
Everyone knows that they need to exercise. The problem in our modern society is that we do not always take the proper time to fit exercise into our daily routine. Being inconsistent with our routines can lead to "weekend warrior" injuries. We lift too much weight in the gym, pack all sports activities into two afternoons, cram all our yard work into a few hours, etc.
NIES: A chance to learn while you enjoy
Most of us who work daily in the wine business here in North Idaho would be impressed to know that the North Idaho Enological Society, NIES for short, has been around for 30-plus years. Impressed because as wine professionals working in the wine world daily, we have seen the marketplace come far over the last five years, and also see that it still has room to grow. So to think of what the marketplace for wine might have looked like 30 years ago, we are indeed impressed at how the folks at NIES not only got started, but have kept the focus on education and enjoyment of wine for all those years.

One of the most difficult things to resist, especially around the holidays, are the sweets. They satisfy the palate, are pleasing to the eye, and just plain ol' taste good. Too bad they're not as good for you as they taste. Worse than not good, sugar is poison.

How liberals can really make a difference
On Thanksgiving Day I had the misfortune of reading a "My Turn" article published in the Nov. 27, 2013 Press by Jimmy Pappas. The article caught my attention when I read the charge he made about a "cut and slash agenda" when referring to spending on food stamps, Meals on Wheels, Head Start, Social Security, etc. all federal programs. Mr. Pappas is apparently not aware of how Baseline budgeting for federal programs work. As a tax person, I have to deal in law and facts. Here are the facts that clarify what "cut or slashed spending" really means.

Holiday stress: Survival tips for couples
Most people say that the winter holiday season is the most joyful time of the year. It can also be one of the most stressful times. Some people experience sadness and loneliness during the holidays and for those who have recently lost a loved one, a relationship, or a job, this time of year can be very painful. The onslaught of media images of supernaturally happy people effortlessly buying vast piles of expensive goodies (and getting triple miles) can make you feel like an underachiever.

We are the same, but different
Even though we may have our own economy here, it is always interesting to see how we compare to the rest of the nation when it comes to real estate trends. Given that our own foreclosure and short sales have fallen by roughly 37 percent from the previous year, we were interested to read, in Realtor Magazine, that a similar trend is taking place on a national level.
CHRISTMAS: Keep it joyous in Cd'A
What has happened to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho? My husband and I moved here with our young family in 1970. It was a wonderful town with kind and caring people. At Christmas time we would go through the stores as we did our shopping and admire all the beautiful decorations. “Merry Christmas” was displayed in every window. People were happy and excited about Christmas. Our children grew up with an understanding that Christmas was truly a magical time of year.

Have you ever been told, "It's all in your head"? Over 100 million Americans live with chronic disease and pain and for many, these conditions bring significant limitations of life activities. This can be especially frustrating and even humiliating for people who suffer from diseases that are difficult to diagnose and involve subtle combinations of physical and mental symptoms. Chronic fatigue syndrome, lupus, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, Lyme disease, and many other diseases present elusive, irregular and debilitating combinations of symptoms. People with these conditions are often shuttled from one health care provider to another and told directly or indirectly that they have a mental or emotional problem.

"Unanswered Prayers" was the title of a hit song by Garth Brooks in 1990. The lyrics of this song expressed the idea that heartbreak and sadness of a failed relationship may lead to something even better than what was prayed for - in the long run - and that some of God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers.

KROC: Share and share alike
I would strongly disagree with Eric Peterson’s recent letter about the Kroc pool times. I have been swimming at the Kroc since it opened. I swim when my kids are at swim practice with CAST. I have never had any trouble finding a lane to swim in even when there are only four lanes available for open swim. I am usually there from 5:30 to 7 p.m. a few nights a week, and Monday mornings from 7 to 8 a.m. Most times I only share with one other person and we split a lane, unless a third person shows up and then we will “circle” swim. In my opinion this is fairly rare that there are more than three people in a lane at the peak after work times. I would recommend that swimmers understand the concept of circle swimming so that each person is able to do their workout when they arrive at the Kroc Center during peak times.

It's what we do at St. Vincent de Paul
The Friday before Thanksgiving I received a call from a local small business owner. He told me that he had an employee who was in the hospital, and was expected to be there through Thanksgiving, his wife and 3-month-old child were home and their rent was due. "Can you help them"? After checking with my Social Service director, he was able to get them qualified and we were able to cover their rent for November. Within 15 minutes of the original call, I called the business owner back, he told me he just got off the phone with his employee's wife who was choked up. The business owner said to me "I've known you for years, I've heard you talk about St Vincent de Paul but have never really known what you do. This is what you do!" Puzzled I asked "what do you mean?" He said "this is what you do! You help anyone you can help if you're able to." I replied to him "it's what we do."

As a result of these divergent trend lines, Polish students now outperform their American peers in both math and science by a significant margin.

ART: Testament to wasted funds
“Umbrellas Gracilis” is what the sculpture on the Fourth Street and Kathleen roundabout is called. I’d call it the Fourth Street Folly. It will be an everlasting monument to the Coeur d’Alene City Council’s waste of taxpayer money. Whether or not one likes the artwork, this is a plain and simple misuse of $28,000 of public funds.

Rights more universal over time
When you think about the times - just after World War II with communications among people and nations exponentially rarer and more difficult than today - calling anything "universal" was rather bold. Culture, language, and perspectives varied even more widely than they do now, because we had less cross-border interaction with each other on every level. Next week's anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights may seem a non-event today, but its signing on Dec. 10, 1948, was monumental.

DHD: Not just for kids
Adults with ADHD lead disrupted and disruptive lives
Contrary to general belief, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) does not always go away as people leave childhood behind. While the condition may look different in children, many adults with ADHD suffer from severe distractibility, forgetfulness, and disorganization. They often exhibit impulsiveness, carelessness or even reckless behavior. They usually experience high levels of frustration and a lot of emotional ups and downs, and their behavior often takes a large emotional toll on their partners.
Sacrificing our health
At certain times of the year, our mental and emotional stability stand out more glaringly than other times. We are now entering one of those times. As the stress of the holidays bears down on us - fervent shopping, working longer hours, kids' events and expectations that commonly arise with various activities - how strong we are emotionally can impact the joy we can feel.
Why food is delicious
While having dinner with friends this week, the discussion of food and consumption coming from the source becomes contentious. "Green chili stew is most delicious when eaten in Santa Fe," a member of the party offers when another disagrees, "If we had a New Mexican restaurant here, people would eat our food and think of New Mexico and therefore, enjoy our food, if authentically prepared, as much as they might enjoy a meal consumed in New Mexico." The discussion becomes more dynamic when my wife offers; "Sourdough bread tastes better in San Francisco." The friendly battle is on!
Dental care- your way
Every once in a while, there is a breaking news story that comes out regarding the inconsistency between dental practitioners. The most popular one I know of involved a journalist who received comprehensive exams at the hands of 50 different dentists. His experience showed an astounding discrepancy between the treatments that were offered, with a price tag ranging from about $1,200 to nearly $30,000! The conclusion that he drew was that dentists are not to be trusted - after all, they can't even agree with themselves!

Wine self-doubt
Around the holidays and other special occasions, many of us delve into our collections of special bottles of wine to share with friends and family. It is, in short, that time of year when we not only want to treat ourselves but those close to us with a bottle that is meaningful and one we recall as being especially good. Sometimes, though, we may find the wine to be lacking when we taste it - it is just not the wine we remember so vividly. We start to think, "What was I thinking? This is not so good."

Dioma 'Dottie' Wardian, 90
She was a star from the Heavens, sent into our lives for 90 short years. Her soul was white as a lily, her heart a perfect rose. She was gracious in all circumstances and thoughtful to a fault. Always concerned for others, she was a true servant to all, and from her example we learned unconditional love.

US Bank volunteers share vision to Live United
Volunteer Corner
Sherri Schaffer and Rebecca Greer of US Bank set the bar high for the United Way of Kootenai County Employee Giving Fundraising Campaign. For more than half a decade, each has dedicated countless hours annually to bring new awareness and employee engagement to an already generous company-wide campaign. However, it is more than just a pledge they seek, but a culture of understanding and active giving with hearts and hands, as well.
Unselfishness has a special place in business
Bill Bradley recently spoke to a group of Minnesota Timberwolves season ticketholders. The topic wasn't his stellar career, basketball strategy or memorable wins. Instead, he talked about unselfishness. After 40 years of traveling America as a Hall of Fame basketball player and a U.S. senator, the Rhodes scholar has a lot of stories to tell about the remarkable, unselfish accomplishments of people both famous and unknown. He features them during his weekly "American Voices" program on Sirius/XM Radio.
ART: Testament to high taxes
On my way to work recently I had the surprise of driving past the “Umbrellas Gracilis” sculpture in the center of the traffic circle on 4th and Kathleen. Whose bright idea was it to spend $28,000 on this ridiculous looking thing that looks more like the Jumpin Jellyfish ride at Disney California Adventure than it does “art”?
HEALTH: Sick over this policy
I work for a local, seasonal company and get laid off in winter time. This company has a health insurance plan for full-time employees that only covers nine months (April-December), and does not include vision or dental care. The normal open enrollment period is the 1st of April on any new year. Suddenly the insurance carrier notified this employer that because of A.C.A., the open enrollment period was moved up to Dec. 1, 2013. Right now the premium for my wife and me is $938 a month, the company pays $100 a month toward this so $838 comes out of my earnings. The plan deductible is $2,000, and after the first $1,000 the company will reimburse me. Anyway, the reason given for the new enrollment period Dec. 1, 2013, is that if we wait til April 1, 2014, they will charge us double the premiums so I would have to pay $1,676 out of my earnings every month for just basic health coverage for two of us. What?!

DAM: A story of government
The government built a dam and upon completion they hired a dam operator to control water flows and power output. Since they now had a payroll, they hired a secretary to do the time cards, etc. Because they now had two or more employees, they put an administrator on staff. Having three employees or more required them to put a human resources officer on staff. Now they had to have an EEO compliance person and a dam safety supervisor. Finally, because of the larger office required and the site landscaping they had to hire a janitor, maintenance supervisor, and an arborist.
